Love? is the upcoming seventh studio album by American recording artist and actress Jennifer Lopez, originally due for release in January 2010 before being pushed back to April 2010 with Epic Records. However following Lopez's parting with Epic in February 2010 the album was pushed back once more to the Summer of 2010. Additionally it will now serve as Lopez's debut release with Island Records who are planning to release the album with a remix disc. She began writing the album during her 2007 pregnancy while recording began in 2008 and continued throughout 2009 and 2010.

On the album Lopez is reunited with Rodney Jerkins who is most famous for producing her break-out hit "If You Had My Love". She has also worked with Danja, Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. The album will be preceded by a number of singles so far including the viral release "Fresh Out the Oven" featuring Pitbull (November 2009) which though never officially released peaked at number one on the U.S. Dance Chart and the lead single "Louboutins" which released on December 21, 2009 also reached number one on the Dance Chart in March 2010 but failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2011, the album's first single, released under Island Records, was revealed to be the RedOne-produced "On the Floor". The up-tempo dance-pop song features vocals from Pitbull and a sample from Kaoma's 1989 hit single "Lambada".

Background

In February 2009, the first of several new recordings, "Hooked On You" was circulated on the internet which confirmed rumours that Lopez was back in the studio recording a brand new album. Later in March 2009 Lopez went on record to speak about the track via her official website "I’m always excited about my music, "Hooked On You" is one of a few tracks I’m currently working on. I’m flattered by everyone’s interest in the track and really excited for you to hear the real thing! Check my website soon for more information on my next release."[8]

In June 2009, Lopez confirmed that she was working on a full length studio album and not a greatest hits collection as previously thought. "I worked on music while I was pregnant and while I was at home, but now to really get into it and focus on it and to finish the project is exciting," she said in an MTV interview. Lopez said she was working on a few singles and trying to finish the album, so it could be out by the end of 2009. She also said that the album would feature a very "focused concept" and that she already chose a title for the album, however, she refused to reveal neither the concept nor the album title. She also confirmed that the two tracks that leaked in May 2009, "One Love" and "What Is Love", will be included on the album, but she doesn't know if they will be the first singles.[9][10] In July 2009, a spokesperson for Lopez confirmed to People magazine that her new studio album is scheduled for release in January 2010 the same month that Lopez's upcoming movie The Back-Up Plan is scheduled to be released.[11] In October 2009, People magazine confirmed the album's January 2010 release date and announced that the title of the album is Love?.[12]

The release of the album has since been delayed to April 2010 to coincide with The Back-Up Plan's new April 2010 release date.[13] "What Is Love" was written by Wynter Gordon who expressed discontent at the song's early arrival on the internet. She said "I respect and admire J-Lo and I was honored for her to cut my song. However the song was not properly serviced. It's not mixed, mastered, or finished but it's out for public consumption and opinion. That's why I'm angry".[14] On December 21, 2009, Rap Up magazine confirmed the album's April 2010 release date coinciding with the release of Lopez's next film project, The Back-up Plan.[6] On January 31, 2010, backstage at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Lopez hinted that the album is pushed back once again and won’t be released in April 2010 as scheduled: She told Extra!: "I’m working on my album that will be out… hopefully this year, we’ll see if I get it done… You know how it is, you go in your there non-stop, you leave it alone for a minute and you come back – you’re like, okay, this is what I need".(sic)[15]

On February 22, 2010, it was announced that Lopez parted ways with Epic Records, leaving the fate of the album in jeopardy.[16] The initial press release from Lopez's manager Benny Medina said: "Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist, she is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together".[17] That same day, Lopez's representative confirmed the news to Entertainment Weekly and reported that Lopez is negotiating a deal with several other labels.[18] Lopez herself confirmed the split and announced that she found a new label and that the album will be released in the Summer of 2010, "I have fulfilled my contractual responsibilities with Sony/Epic up to this point, and we have both reached friendly terms about my departure from the label. I'm also happy to say that we've found a new home for my album, 'Love,' and that it is slated for release in the summer of 2010".[19] Billboard magazine would later go on to confirm that Lopez had signed to Def Jam Records.[20] Following this change, Yahoo! Music confirmed that Kuk Harrell and others from RedZone Entertainment (including The-Dream and Tricky Stewart) would be taking Lopez back into the studio to rework the album and record new music.[21][22]

Music

Alongside Darkchild and The Neptunes Lopez has worked with upcoming song writing duo Antea Birchett-Shelton and Anesha Birchett (better known as APlus), Nathaniel "Danja" Hills, Chris n Teeb of Dropzone, Jim Jonsin and D'Mile.[5] According to Rap-Up Magazine Tricky Stewart will also be producing some of the album including the first single "Louboutins" named after Christian Louboutin’s designer footwear. The song was co-produced and co-written by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream and was initially recorded by Brandy but when she left Epic Records the song stayed with the label and subsequently given to Lopez.[4] This is the second time in her ten year career that she has acquired a song previously recorded by Brandy, the first being "Ryde or Die" featured on Lopez's album Rebirth originally recorded for Brandy's Afrodisiac. In November 2009, Stewart told Vibe that his and The-Dream's fellow production associate Kuk Harrell, would be producing a lot of the album too. He said "I heard him working on some of the vocals and she has a lot of really good songs, I will say that," The stuff I heard was really good, really strong".[23]

In late December 2009 Rap-Up was the first amongst several media outlets invited to the exclusive listening party of the album. The magazine said that some of the tracks they previewed were not final mixes and may change between now and release, and that more songs will be added. Although the magazine said that nine songs from the upcoming album were previewed, they listed only seven:[6] The up-tempo production pulsating drum-driven "Everybody's Girl",[3] a new version of "What Is Love" featuring additional drums & bass and "Starting Over" described as having a fast-paced galloping beat (an acoustic version of this song would later be performed on Saturday Night Live). Also previewed was an electropop cut, "This Cannot Be Love" which is reminiscent of other Darkchild productions such as "The Boy Is Mine", previously leaked "One Love", "Keeper" described as having a beat reminiscent of T.I.'s "Hell of a Life" which Danja also produced, and guitar-driven ballad "Beautiful", which according to the magazine may be used during the end credits of Lopez's upcoming movie The Back-Up Plan. Three other songs, "What Is Love (part 2)" (produced by Jean Baptiste), "Love & War" (produced by Danja), and "Story of My Life" (produced by Stargate), were mentioned but not previewed.[6]

The aforementioned song "What is Love" was confirmed in March 2010 to be the lead single from the soundtrack to The Back-Up Plan though it will not be the title theme.[24] In an interview at On Air With Ryan Seacrest Lopez confirmed two songs "Pieces" and "Starting Over" which she said people would relate to most.[25] Furthermore Lopez told The Advocate that whenever she records a new album she always thinks of dance music as it is popular in the gay community and club cultures. She mentioned the song "This Cannot Be Love" which was described as having a similar musicality to Lopez's worldwide hit millennium single, "Waiting for Tonight". The latter was well received by the gay community and so Lopez said she thinks gay people will respond to the song most. Of the song's concept she said "It talks about the idea of getting lazy in love. You know how we do that? When you’re with somebody and you’re like: Wait a minute — remember when we were so in love and obsessed with each other? What happened?"[26] Aside from containing just dance music like all of Lopez's previous albums it will be a mix of genres and have elements of urban music, hip hop and contemporary R&B.[2] She would later go on tbe interviewed by NY Daily News in April 2010 where she said "stuff I'd been performing [the songs 'Starting Over' and 'Until It Beats No More'] will be on the album as will previously released dance cuts ["Louboutins" and 'Fresh Out the Oven']" with the intention of a Summer 2010 release although the album would only be released when finished.[27] The album will also have an accompanying remix disc.[28] After rumors of a collaboration with French DJ/producer David Guetta, Ryan Seacrest confirmed that that Lopez had worked with Guetta to record a cover of Donna Summer's 1979 hit song "On the Radio".[29]

Album title and concept

Lopez revealed that album would be called Love?. Later in an interview she clarified why she had chosen the title: "Love is the most confusing thing in the world, that's why the album is called Love with a question mark."[30] She also revealed that her husband Marc Anthony initially disproved of the title because he felt that it may imply that the couple were having marital problems.[30] She also said "love has always been a theme of my career and this record wasn't going to be different. The album has a lot of up-tempo, dancy, urban tracks."[30] She told MTV that the album would have a very "focused concept" and finished the interview by saying that she "loves making great pop/dance music with beautiful lyrics" which is what will be heard on this record.[9] Previewing the album, Billboard magazine commented on the album saying that "Lopez sings, talk-sings and broods (within pop reason) on the subject of love".[3] Rap-up said of the album's theme, it is very much in-keeping with the title, "a love roller coaster, taking you through the ups and downs of a relationship."[6]

In February 2010 Lopez left Epic Records and joined Def Jam Records. In an interview Lopez confirmed that she will still be pressing ahead with the album in its current form although it will be finished with new material. She confirmed that the album will still be called Love?. She said, "I just feel like it’s an endlessly fascinating topic that all my albums have been about. It’s still very confusing to me and so I explore that on this album, probably more than my other albums."[2]

Critical reception

At the album preview for media outlets Rap-Up's D.L. said "If it ain't broken don't fix it. Jennifer Lopez sticks to her hit making formula on her seventh studio album Love?, featuring contributions from heavy hitters (Danja, Darkchild, Stargate, Tricky Stewart & The-Dream and Wynter Gordon)." The magazine editor said of song 'Everybody's Girl' "J.Lo questions whether her man is capable of loving her under the intense glare of the spotlight over the slick up-tempo production. One of the standout tracks." Then of the song 'What Is Love' "The latest version has been mixed and hits harder with added drums" and of 'This Cannot Be Love' "It quickly picks up the pace with an electro-pop beat and speedy hook. The production gets more aggressive towards the end." Finally of the song 'Beautiful' "It’s a guitar-driven ballad that sounds like it was made for a movie."[6] Meanwhile following Lopez's move to Def Jam records, a snippet of the song "Good Hit" leaked online. MTV Buzzworthy's Chris Ryan said of the song, "Over a slick dance beat, Jennifer Lopez sings about dropping it low in a voice coated with the much-maligned but incredibly popular vocal filter.".[31]

Promotion

In late October 2009, it was reported that the album's first single is called "Louboutins" after the famous fashion brand.[4] As scheduled Lopez performed and officially premiered her new single "Louboutins" at the 2009 American Music Awards, which aired on November 22, 2009. She was subsequently praised for the way that she recovered from an unplanned fall in the middle of the performance.[32] Lopez reprised the performance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on December 3, 2009 where she also laughed and joked about the incident.[33] She was also booked to perform on the season six finale of So You Think You Can Dance on December 16, 2009. The performance took on a holiday theme and was choreographed by the show's team.[34] Her final performance of the year came on December 31, 2009 where Lopez performed "Louboutins" along with a medley of previous hits "Waiting for Tonight" / "Let's Get Loud" at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Lopez's choice of outfit, a shimmering skin-tight cat-suit, received attention from the media with the NY Daily News praising her for her "flawless physique".[35]

On January 18, 2010, on the talk show Lopez Tonight, Lopez appeared in place of George Lopez and opened the show with a ten-minute comedy set. G Lopez appeared after she finished to continue with the show and announced that Jennifer would be back in several weeks with a live band to perform.[36] On February 19, 2010, Lopez performed at the 60th annual Sanremo Music Festival in Sanremo, Italy. She performed a medley of her chart-topping hits, as well as “What Is Love”, introducing it as the lead single from the soundtrack of her upcoming movie "The Back-Up Plan".[37][38] On February 27, 2010, Lopez performed and hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live. She performed two new songs: "Pieces" and "Starting Over"[39] although it was later confirmed that the first song Lopez performed was actually inaccurately reported to be called "Pieces" when in fact she performed "Until It Beats No More".[2] On January 16, 2010, a trailer for a new promotional single, "Good Hit", was released. In the video Lopez assumes the role of a teacher to lead a classroom of beauty school students.[40] It was directed by Alex Moors back in October 2010.[41]

Lola and 'Fresh Out the Oven'

On September 13, 2009, on the red carpet for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Miami-based rapper Pitbull revealed that he recorded a track with Lopez and that it will be released as the first single from her upcoming album.[42] He also said that a music video for the song has already been shot, he described the video as having a sexy Eyes Wide Shut theme. The song, initially confirmed as "Lola", was produced by The Neptunes.[43] It was later revealed that the song is actually called "Fresh Out the Oven". In October 2009, a number of viral websites have been set up to promote the song, all under the name of Who is Lola, the websites include WhoisLola.com, a MySpace page, and a Twitter account. They all feature a dancing female figure named Lola.[44] People magazine later reported that, "Fresh Out The Oven", is just a buzz track, not the first single, and that it will not appear on the new album.[12] Rumors had surfaced that that Lopez had adopted 'Lola', as her alter-ego, however, this was confirmed as false by president of Epic Records, Amanda Ghost. She said "It's something fun. She hasn't become Sasha Fierce (Beyoncé's artistic alter ego). There won't be anything to do with Lola on her Love? album". "This is a hot club record that the label loved and Jennifer thought was fun, Jennifer and Pitbull got together and the record leaked. Lola is a fun character just for this song".[12] On November 5, 2009, MTV gave a sneak peak of the music video and reported that contrary to previous reports the song will be included on the album.[45] Lopez was in attendance at the LIV Nightclub in Miami on October 24, 2009, where the music video for "Fresh Out The Oven" was previewed[46][47] with official remix by Hex Hector also being previewed. It was also reported that the production duo and DJs the Jump Smokers had produced an official remix which was also supposed to be previewed but for undisclosed reasons it was shelved.[48] The music video for "Fresh Out The Oven" premiered on Lopez's official website on November 20, 2009.[49] The clip was directed by Jonas Åkerlund[50] and according to Lopez's official website its formally titled: "Fresh Out the Oven" staring Jennifer Lopez as Lola & featuring Pitbull.[51] On December 21, 2009, Rap-Up magazine reported that it will most likely feature on the album[6] with Billboard later saying that it is likely to appear as a bonus track.[3] It was leaked online by Epic Records and sent to club DJs as well as dance radio stations, accompanied with several remixes on November 26, 2009. It stayed on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart in excess of thirteen weeks and in its tenth week it peaked at number one giving Lopez her seventh U.S. dance chart number one.

  • "Louboutins" was confirmed to be the official first single from the album and was performed song live for the first time at the 2009 American Music Awards on November 22, 2009.[52] It had its radio debut on November 23, 2009 when Lopez premiered the song on KIIS FM radio show On Air With Ryan Seacrest.[53] It was sent to U.S. radio on December 8, 2009 and to U.S. iTunes on December 21, 2009. Three months after release, the song topped the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart, giving Lopez her eighth number one on the U.S. dance chart.
  • "On the Floor" featuring Pitbull, is set to be released as the new lead single from Love?. According to Rap-Up, the RedOne-produced single has house music influences and samples the 1989 hit single "Lambada" by Kaoma.[54]
