Anthems is the debut studio album by English stage actress and singer Kerry Ellis. It was released on 13 September 2010 by Decca Records. The album, comprising eleven tracks, was produced by Brian May – lead guitarist of the band Queen.

After a previously released "teaser" extended play, Wicked in Rock (2008), Anthems is its follow-up but also signifies Ellis' first mainstream release. Ellis refers to the album as one that tries "to tap into all the different areas that [she has] been part of" in her professional career over the years 2000-10. Photography for the album's artwork was done by Paul Rider with design and art direction by Tourist.

The album's lead single "I'm Not that Girl" was released on 6 September 2010 alongside a B-side of "Dangerland". Its second single "Anthem" was released on 12 December 2010.

The album peaked at number fifteen on the UK Albums Chart and remained on the chart for two weeks. Despite its limited success on the chart, it was received postively by critics.

Background and development

Anthems is the follow-up album to a previously released teaser extended play (EP) Wicked in Rock (2008), which was also produced and arranged by Brian May.[1] This studio album features the three songs from that teaser EP, new arrangements of personal favourites and some completely original material – all produced and arranged by both May, and musician, Steve Sidwell[2] while Don Black, English lyricist, especially adapted the song "Diamonds are Forever" for Ellis.[3]

Release

Anthems was released as a CD on 13 September 2010 in the United Kingdom through Decca,[4] and in the United States on 28 September 2010[5] through Decca's parent company, Universal. It was made available to pre-order at online retailers like Amazon and Play.com in April 2010, and later on the UK's iTunes music store in August 2010.

An exclusive box set of Anthems was released exclusively online through Ellis' official online store.[6] The box set version of Anthems contains the full album, a 5 x 7 art print, a four page booklet with images and a personal message from Ellis, logo badges, postcards and a bonus DVD with featurettes upon the development of Anthems.

Anthems: The Concert and tour

Scheduled charity performances, titled Anthems: The Concert, at the Royal Albert Hall will support this debut studio album. These performances (matinée and evening), in aid of the charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, are scheduled on 1 May 2011 and will see Ellis accompanied by Brian May, American performer Adam Pascal and a host of various other musicians, orchestras and dancers.

In an interview with Broadway.com, Ellis stated that her plan was "to have a tour to promote" Anthems.[25] In November 2010, she announced on Twitter that the plans for a tour are to go ahead with details to follow. In January 2011, it was reported that she is scheduled to partake in a fifteen-date tour of the United Kingdom which will visit Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh. Dates and other cities are "still being decided."[26]

On February 14th 2011, it was announced that Ellis will tour with Brian May, taking in 12 dates across the UK in May. [27]
