wiki mentor

Hey Patrick! I am a junior at James Madison University working on a U.S. Public Policy WikiProject for my Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication 240 class. This is our project page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_United_States_Public_Policy/Courses/Spring_2011/Professional_and_Technical_Editing_(Cindy_Allen) and we were asked to choose a mentor. I was hoping you would be available to help me through this venture? Hope your having a great week and have an awesome weekend! Thanks,

Katie Woloshin (woloshkm)

P.S. Feel free to find me on facebook :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Woloshkm (talkcontribs) 20:08, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, might want to take a look at my talk page, Sadads (talk) 23:25, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mentor selected!

Hello there,

My name is Spencer Adams and I'm a sophomore at James Madison University. I am in the WRTC 240 class with Cindy Allen as the professor an while this whole "choosing a mentor" thing seems a bit superficial, you seemed to fit my needs the best.

A little about myself...I'm a nerd at times, I play Starcraft 2 way too much, but I have my everyday-guy traits too. I live in an apartment with 3 of my buds and it is making the college experience so much better. I have a massive sneaker collection, I'm a huge movie buff, I love finding new indie/rap music, and my Windows 7 Phone is better than the iPhone will ever be.

I hope we can have some fun doing this project and that you'll be my mentor, have a good weekend!

Hey Patrick

Hey Patrick,

I'm looking for a mentor throughout this WikiProject experience. I am a graduate student in the Public Affairs program at Western Carolina University in the western North Carolina mountains. I anticipate doing my research and Wiki-entry on a beloved little law of mine: The Migrant Housing Act of N.C. It's a rocky subject and one that affects many businesses, N.C. natives, and Latino populations in our state. I'm new to Wikipedia and have no experience in writing or editing Wikipedia entries...so, that's where I'd love your help and guidance when available!

Keep in touch and feel free to Facebook me: Mindy Bayless.

Best,

Mindy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ms68441 (talkcontribs) 03:20, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

wikiproject us public policy

Hi Patrick, thanks for the feedback...we are in the process of moving our article from sandbox to the main page...can you give me a quick summary how that works? thanksDabenson (talk) 15:27, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Patrick, I am a college student at Simmons College in Boston and my Public Relations Courses is working as a group on the current wiki project on us public policy. I wanted to introduce myself and would like you to be a mentor for me during the course to help me with writing articles and some editing tips. I am hopeful you are up to the challenge to be my mentor. Denise — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dabenson (talkcontribs) 16:21, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for being my mentor, kiddo!

Hey Patrick-

Thanks for the message! Excited to have you as my mentor... trust me, I am not computer-savvy, so this will be fun! :)

This week, Dr. Cooper (our professor) asked us to add in three articles to our pages (my Sandbox) so he can see where our research is beginning. I've already done quite an extensive amount of research on my topic, but it's ever-growing, thus ever-changing, so I have a lot more to do. Glad you like my topic...it's a touchy one.

Talk soon!

public policy subjects

One of my upcoming assignments is to critically evaluate an existing Wikipedia article and to research and list 3-5 articles that I would consider working on our Wikipedia project. Do you have any suggestions that would be of interest to our class project? (Dabenson (talk) 16:54, 2 February 2011 (UTC))dabenson[reply]

License tagging for File:School Year Abroad logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:School Year Abroad logo.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 23:06, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you're doing well!

Hey Patrick-

Hope all is well your way. I haven't added anything new to my WikiSandbox page, but just wanted to say "hi"! I'll be adding some additional sources this afternoon that will help me in beginning to formulate the body/content of my Migrant Housing Act of N.C. page....so I'll let you know when I get something underway and see if you'd mind taking a peek and providing feedback. Thanks so much! Hope you didn't get too much snow! :)

marking mentees' userpages

Hey Patrick! This is just a quick reminder: please be sure to add {{WAP student}} (for an example, see User:Sfofana) the user pages of your mentees. And once they are working on articles, be sure to tag the talk pages with {{WAP assignment}}. Cheers--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:27, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article Selection

Hi Patrick, How are these articles as possibilities to edit? 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_policy 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_economics 3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_media — Preceding unsigned comment added by Communicationstudent4 (talkcontribs) 14:56, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Virginia Seismic Zone requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. NeutralhomerTalk15:57, 21 February 2011 (UTC) 15:57, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This wasn't done without great thought, but after looking at the edits from the page, I had to post it as a copyvio. Since this was made very early in your Wikipedia "career", I am pretty sure it will be excused and I recommend that it is. I would recommend that you go back to the article and put work to it to make it a non-copyvio and source it with this link. - NeutralhomerTalk16:02, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Poor man's talkback: see here. - NeutralhomerTalk16:33, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note to say I have removed the template from the page, this is no longer considered a copyvio. Thank you for your hard work. :) - NeutralhomerTalk01:49, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mentoring students: be sure to check in on them

This message is going out to all of the Online Ambassadors who are, or will be, serving as mentors this term.

Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it!

If you aren't mentoring anyone yet, it looks like you will be soon; at least one large class is asking us to assign mentors for them, and students in a number of others haven't yet gotten to asking ambassadors to be their mentors, but may soon. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:07, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey patrick, I am currently working on an article on executive order 11478. I posted a lot of the policies of this executive order but am having trouble on what else to post with it. Autopatrolled

Hello, this is just to let you know that I have granted you the "autopatrolled" permission. This won't affect your editing, it just automatically marks any page you create as patrolled, benefiting new page patrollers. Please remember:

  • This permission does not give you any special status or authority
  • Submission of inappropriate material may lead to its removal
  • You may wish to display the {{Autopatrolled}} top icon and/or the {{User wikipedia/autopatrolled}} userbox on your user page
  • If, for any reason, you decide you do not want the permission, let me know and I can remove it
If you have any questions about the permission, don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, happy editing! Acalamari 12:02, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats! :) - NeutralhomerTalk23:34, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! But what is it that give me this privilege? Is it just edit count or to do with the mentoring?-- Patrick, oѺ 00:46, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Patrickneil, the reason you were given this right is because you were on a list of potential candidates for the autopatrolled userright. However, merely being on the list doesn't mean someone automatically gets the userright, rather, they get it because 1. they've created a lot of articles, and 2. their articles are of good quality. As your articles fits that criteria, you got the userright. I hope this answers your question. Best. Acalamari 12:00, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff then. I appreciate it!-- Patrick, oѺ 15:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP:TFA nomination for Virginia

I noticed that you added this article to the pending list a few days back. There is an open spot on the requests page presently, so right now would be a good time to write up a blurb and nominate it. --SkotyWATC 17:21, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but the dates which would give the request the most points are in May and June, so I think I need to hold off on requesting the article until the appropriate time before. Or were you suggesting I nominate this for the non-specific date spot? Also, I will need a judgment call from other editors on whether or not the featuring of Erie, Pennsylvania on February 4 will negate our ability to claim that its been 3 months since a similar article. Its a city, not a state, but that was enough for some users to oppose my request last year, when Grand Forks, North Dakota blocked my chances. It will make a difference as to when I can request it, since those 2 points would put it over the 5 required to make a request the full 20 days ahead of time.-- Patrick, oѺ 17:52, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ack! Sorry, I thought you had put March 14-15, not May. My mistake. --SkotyWATC 02:55, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, no worries then. But I will be requesting it eventually, so I hope we'll get your support then!-- Patrick, oѺ 03:27, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

About topic choosing!

Hi Patrick, I have been enjoying playing with wikipedia editing so far. And I am starting to choose a topic to create a new entry. Would you mind giving me some suggestions about topics? Here are three topics that I am interested in. Cybercrime in China and countermeasures/ Cyberstalking in China and countermeasures/ Music Licensing. Which one do you think would be easier to organize material and become a good article? Thanks for your kindness!

Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Thanks! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:13, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thanks for your great advice on topic choosing! I'll look at those articles you suggest and decide to start a new entry or work on a stub.

I just wanted to let you know that in class today we had Denise move her article into the main namespace. It's not perfect yet, but she has a good amount of material and some references, so it should have DYK potential. As her mentor, can you shepherd her through that process, getting it up to standard and helping her nominate it (keeping in mind that the 5-day clock has started)? Thanks! :-) Dominic·t 19:23, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Entry for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani

I would like your assistance in returning many of the edits that were done today, March 28, 2011. Well documented citations have been removed, and unsupported information has been inserted, much of the same edits that have been undertaken in the last few months. This is very frustrating as I have been working diligently to bring some balance to the article, which you know has seen its share of editing of the type that has been taken today. Even though I do not agree with all the content in the article, I have chosen to leave certain parts alone so as to assure that it is balanced.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it it not usual to add comments about edits, especially ones that not only change the content and tone of an article, but also ones that add or delete portions? Not only was the information incorrect, but several of the citations did not reflect the information that was added. I can add comments about improper citation, but this is what I did in previous months so as to tag the citations, ensuring they were properly cited.

I know we must not get into politics, but I will tell you that these types of edits have taken place when a major blow has been dealt against the case by the Iranian government. And in this case, the UN took an unprecedented step of calling for an appointment of a rapporteur to observe and report on human rights issues in Iran, including cases involving sentences/punishments of stoning. This all being said, your assistance would be greatly appreciated in helping with this. I know that simply doing an 'undo' will result in an automatic reversal, and a back and forth of edits will ensue. This will result in further assault on Wikipedia as unreliable as a result of this type of action, and I do not want to add to that as I do find that Wikipedia to be a valuable resource.

Respectfully,

Petit9621 (talk) 01:32, 29 March 2011 (UTC)petit9621[reply]

Thank you so much for restoring the article! Is there a way to partially lock it down. I know that this is rarely done, but I'm afraid that this recent edit is not the last one...

Respectfully,

Check-in

Hey, Patrick! Hope all's well with you! I was going to see if you could take a look at my Wikipage (Migrant Housing Act of N.C.) and give some feedback. I've been truckin' along on it and have some questions on how to do my lead. Initially, the "Background" section was my lead, but I was told that should be its own section (thus, now in Background). What exactly does a lead need to have and how long should it be? Also, what's your philosophy on interview references? I've heard both and thought you may be able to assist me in referencing some interviews over the next couple of weeks? Thanks! ~M.S.
