Freezing (フリージング, Furījingu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Korean manhwa creators Dall-Young Lim and Kwang-Hyun Kim respectively.[1] The manga started serialization in Kill Time Communication's male-oriented Japanese SF/fantasy manga magazine Comic Valkyrie in 2007.[2] The series revolves around an extraterrestrial force called the Nova that are invading Earth, and genetically-engineered girls called Pandoras and their male partners called Limiters are created to combat them. The story centers on Kazuya Aoi, a Limiter whose late sister was a Pandora, and Satellizer el Bridget, a Pandora with a cold personality who is known as the "Untouchable Queen" for her intense aphephobia, both enrolled at West Genetics Academy, a special school that trains Pandoras and Limiters alike to fight against the Nova.
On August 12, 2010, an anime adaptation produced by A.C.G.T was announced,[3] and aired in Japan between January and April 2011 on AT-X and other channels.
Plot
Set in a slightly futuristic world, Earth has been invaded and is at war with aliens from another dimension called the Nova. In order to counter them, Pandoras and Limiters, genetically modified girls with super fighting skills and their male partners who use special "freezing" powers to limit their opponent's mobility, are made to fight against the Nova. The series focuses on Kazuya Aoi, a Limiter whose late sister was a Pandora, and Satellizer el Bridget, a powerful Pandora with a cold personality, both who are enrolled at the West Genetics Academy, one of the many academies where Pandoras and Limiters are trained. In spite of the warnings of all his friends about Satellizer, who has intense aphephobia, Kazuya decides to be her friend and Limiter. The story follows Kazuya's friendship with Satellizer, the students of the Academy and Earth's war against the Nova.
Characters
Main characters
- Kazuya Aoi (アオイ カズヤ, Aoi Kazuya)
- Voiced by: Mitsuhiro Ichiki
- The main protagonist and a Japanese Limiter who enrolls at West Genetics. His older sister, Kazuha Aoi, was a Pandora who sacrificed her life to defeat a powerful Nova that invaded Japan in the past. Unlike the other students who fear Satellizer, Kazuya knows that she is being misunderstood and is kind to her. He also empathizes with her as she resembles his late sister and later decides to become her Limiter. Despite being male, 30% of his body is composed of Stigma tissue,[4] enabling him to use Freezing without unifying his senses with a Pandora's.[5] Freezing normally can only be done after the pair has performed a ceremony called a "baptism". In addition, his Freezing can be omnidirectional,[6] an ability that was thought to be limited to Novas, and can also break the Freezing of multiple Limiters.[5] This makes him a perfect partner for Satellizer since she refuses to be baptized with a Limiter.
- Satellizer el Bridget (サテライザー エル ブリジット, Sateraizā Eru Burijitto)
- Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
- The main heroine and one of the strongest Pandoras in the Academy. She was formerly ranked the number one second-year Pandora before being demoted to the 2nd rank due to Kazuya's interference during a tournament. Known as the Untouchable Queen (接触禁止の女王, Sesshokukinshi Joō) because of her intense aphephobia, she is feared by the students for her cold and ruthless personality. It is revealed that she transferred to West Genetics from East Genetics after brutally injuring Brooks Levon, a Limiter with a playboy personality who wanted her to become his Pandora. As a result, she was suspended for the entire school year, meaning that Satellizer would have been a third-year student hadn't the incident occurred.[7] Her Genetics uniform is also unique from the others, donning a red dress with gold accents.
- Hailing from the United Kingdom, she is a member of the noble el Bridget Family despite being the child of the Head of the family, Howard el Bridget and his mistress, Noelle Alon-Grache. Because of this, she and her mother was hated by her father's wife, Olivia, who later encouraged her son, her younger half-brother, Louis, to mistreat her. However, Louis' mistreatment later turns into sexual abuse and Satellizer was forced to endure it as her mother was terminally ill and didn't want their family situation to worsen. But the abuse ended after her older half-sister, Violet, learned about it and moved her away for her own safety. Upon returning to attend her mother's deathbed, her mother apologized for what she had gone through and told her to never lose and to become stronger than anyone.[8] Her mother's words become her driving force in life, resulting in her severe determination and will. Due to the abuse she suffered, she hates being touched and goes berserk if anyone touches her. Surprisingly, Kazuya is the only exception when he touches her. Originally she doesn't want anything to do with Kazuya but she eventually is won over by his kindness and accepts him as her Limiter. Later on, she insists on Kazuya to call her by her nickname "Satella", though he still uses the senpai honorific. Despite her fearsome reputation and ruthlessness in battle, she has a quiet and reserved nature, collecting stuffed animals as well as knitting.[volume & issue needed] After facing her past demons, she finally loses her aphephobia and no longer reacts when other people touch her. She has a penchant for eating hamburgers, and is often seen with a bundle of them whenever she eats lunch, often sharing them with Kazuya. She admitted to being in love with Kazuya, however, she has not confessed to him because she is simply too nervous to do so.
- Despite her low synchronization rate with her Stigmata, she was implanted with six of Kazuha's Stigmata before her enrollment into Genetics due to her family's influence.[9] She tends to remove her glasses before a fight despite having myopia since activation of the Volt Texture optimizes the senses including eyesight. Her Volt Weapon, "Nova Blood" (ノヴァ・ブラッド, Nova Buraddo), is a giant-handled blade.
- Lana Linchen (ラナ リンチェン, Rana Rinchen)
- Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa
- A Pandora and new transfer student from Tibet and a disciple of the goddess Kunlun. Kind yet naive and easy to fool, she is not very wise, especially about city life. She was sent to West Genetics as a second-year student to learn more about her Pandora abilities and to find "her soulmate" (a Limiter), and believes Kazuya is her soulmate but learns his partner is Satellizer. The third-years uses her naivety to trick her to fight against Satellizer under the belief that Satellizer was only using Kazuya for his powers,[10] but when she learns she was tricked, she joins forces with Satellizer to fight against the third-years. Despite accepting Kazuya's choice of partner, she still hopes to convince him to become her Limiter and maintains a rivalry with Satellizer.
- Lana has six Stigmata, which are referred to in her homeland as the Tears of Kunlun (クンルンの涙). Unlike most Pandoras, who usually have their Stigmata surgically implanted into them, she was born with one of them naturally (referred to as "Maria-type").[11] She specializes in hand-to-hand combat with her Volt Weapon Shinen (四念, lit. "Four Senses"), a pair of steel-plated gloves and boots which, in tandem with her ability to use her Stigmata to channel energy throughout her body, make her a formidable opponent. She is also a proficient user of the Sacred Gate Hakkyokuken (聖門八極拳, Seimon Hakkyoku-ken) fighting style, utilizing powerful techniques such as the Empty Fang (空牙, Kūga) and Flaming Fang (炎牙, Enga), and she can generate wings made from the energy of her Stigmata, allowing her to block any attack within a five-meter radius. She frequently ends her sentences with de arimasu (〜であります).

- Ganessa Roland (ガネッサ ローランド, Ganessa Rōrando)
- Voiced by: Eri Kitamura
- A second-year Pandora from the UK known as the Angel of Confinement (束縛の天使, Sokubaku no Tenshi).[volume & issue needed] Originally the 2nd-ranked second-year Pandora, she became 1st after she takes advantage of Kazuya's interference to defeat Satellizer. Hotheaded and prideful, she is easily angered and tends to let her pride get into her head sometimes, much to Arthur's chargin. While she sees herself as Satellizer's rival, she does considers her a friend and comrade. Her Volt Weapon, Chains of Binding (束縛の鎖, Sokubaku no Rensa), are four (six in the anime) chained flails attached to her back which she can manipulate its movements and extend its length. In the anime, two of the flails transform into circular saws.

- The seventh-ranked strongest third-year student from Germany known as the Guardian of Order (秩序の守護者, Chitsujo no Shugosha).[volume & issue needed] Her strong determination to punish those who break the Academy's rules stems from an incident that happened during her second year at the Academy where Marin Maxwell, a friend of hers, sacrificed herself to defeat a Nova. Believing that the disorder of the lower ranks was the cause for Marin's death, she will use all of her power to ensure that order in the Academy will be kept. It was only after her battle with Satellizer did she realize the truth behind Marin's death, and later breaks down into tears. While she calls herself the Liberator of Virtue (貞操の解放者, Teisō no Kaihōsha), she is derogatorily known as The Limiter Eater (新入りリミッター喰い, Shin'iri Rimittā Kui) for seducing Limiters then taking back her Stigmatas given to them when she tires of them.[15] Her Volt Weapon, "Homing Dagger" (ホーミングダガー, Hōmingu Dagā), are several flying daggers she remotely controls. She spies on Kazuya and tries to make him her newest Limiter but he refuses which leads to a fight between her and Satellizer. After defeating her, she and her Limiters sexually harassed and humiliated Satellizer, which leads to Kazuya to activate his powerful Freezing ability to paralyze them, enabling Satellizer to attack them brutally. In the anime, Miyabi was about to be speared by Satellizer's Volt Weapon but was spared after Kazuya used his Freezing to stop Satellizer then pleaded with the latter to stop. However, in the manga, Satellizer stabs her twice before Kazuya stops her but manages to survive thanks to her Pandora regeneration ability.[16] In both cases, their fight will later lead to a conflict between Satellizer and the other third-years.

Despite having the highest synchronization rate with Kazuha's Stigmata and receiving three of them, Cassie does not feel she is the most powerful Pandora, and believes herself to be undeserving of the title after she fought with Satellizer during the Levon incident, which made her realize how weak and scared she was compared to Satellizer's determination and refusal to give up. As a child, she wanted to be a novelist, but her father forced her to attend East Genetics to become a Pandora for his political career. Her encounter with Satellizer made her change her mind, in which she decides to settle down with her Limiter Kyoichi, who she is also in love with.
- When four Type S Novas attacked East Genetics, she, along with several of her Pandora comrades (including Milena) were absorbed by one the Novas, infected, and turned into Nova Form Pandoras. She, and the other Nova Form Pandoras that were affected, launched a full-scale attack on West Genetics. She fought a long and grueling battle with Satellizer, nearly killing her until she was beaten by the latter's newly-acquired Nova Form, having both of her arms severed and the source of her infection destroyed. - Marin Maxwell (マリン マックスウェル, Marin Makkusuweru)

- Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
- The most powerful Pandora of the 8th Nova Clash, the creator of the High End Skills, and Kazuya's older sister. She is said to have sacrificed herself at the last Nova War to save her friends. Kazuha was special as much of her body was composed of Stigma tissue, which allowed 20 Stigmata to be inserted into her body, but she was consumed by them and was in the process of turning into a Nova herself.[volume & issue needed] Because of this, the higher-ups started limiting the number of Stigmata a Pandora can have. Six of her Stigmata have been inherited by Satellizer, three by Cassie, two by Charles, two by Julia, and one by Roxanne.
- Maria Lancelot
- The first Pandora, referred to as "The Mother of all Pandoras" and the "Holy Corpse," as all Stigmata used by other Pandoras and Limiters are actually fragments of her crystallized body. Her body is stored deep within West Genetics' underground chamber, the Ravensborne Nuclecheode, and was the main target of the Nova during the 10th Nova Clash.
Terminology
- Genetics (ゼネティックス, Zenetikkusu)
- A special school that specializes in training Pandoras and Limiters alike to combat against the Nova. There are multipule Genetics branches all over the world, including two in Japan: East Genetics and West Genetics, both located in their respective regions.
- Pandora (パンドラ)
- Genetically-engineered girls with incredible speed and strength. They are capable of materializing their own unique weapons called Volt Weapons (ボルトウェポン, Boruto Weapon). They have a self-regenerating material called Volt Texture (ボルトテクスチャー, Boruto Tekusuchā) that is activated with their Stigmata, which heightens and improves their senses like hearing and eyesight and allows them to make quick clothing changes and repair any damaged clothes. They also have the ability to regenerate lost limbs, though this shortens their lifespan due to rapid cell growth.
- Limiter (リミッター, Rimittā)
- The male partners of Pandoras who have the power to freeze their opponents and preventing their partners to be freezed too. It is said that the synchronization between Limiters and Pandoras is easier when the Limiter is younger.
- Pandora Mode (パンドラモード, Pandora Mōdo)
- A powered-up form perform by higher-ranking Pandoras. In the manga, Pandora Mode takes form of a powered armored suit while in the anime, the Pandora have physical changes (silvery-white hair, yellow eyes, and blue rings around their wrists and ankles). Despite the differences, in both versions, Pandoras in Pandora Mode gain increased strength and power as well as having the ability to move in the opponents' freezing grid without aid from a Limiter. The Pandora's Volt Weapon also gains an upgrade while in this state, turning it into a Nova Weapon (ノヴァウェポン, Nova Weapon). Also, it has been stated that Pandoras are forbidden to use Pandora Mode other than in actual combat with a Nova. Despite it's advantages, the downside of Pandora Mode is that Pandoras can only maintain it for three minutes and once the time limit is over, the Pandora will return to her normal but in a severely weakened state, which leaves her vulnerable to attacks.
- Chevalier (シュバリエ, Shubarie)
- Elite Pandoras who serve under the military. A Pandora with exceptional skills can join the Chevaliers if she is a fourth-year student.
- Ereinbar Set (イレインバーセット, Ireinbā Setto)
- When a Pandora and Limiter synchronize their brain waves to allow the Limiter to use his Freezing abilities and ultimately, increase their fighting strength. This can only be achieved if the pair performs a baptism.
- Baptism (洗礼)
- A ceremony in which a Pandora officially acknowledges a Limiter as her partner, giving him her Stigmata.
- Carnival (カーニバル, Kānibaru)
- A monitored all-out battle royal event to determine top-ranking Pandoras. Any battles conducted after the Carnival is done does not change a Pandora's rank. This event helps the higher-ups for battle research and when they must fight the Nova with as little casualties as possible.
- Nova (異次元体ノヴァ, Stylized as N.O.V.A.)
- Inter-dimensional aliens that are invading Earth. Usually they have attacked Earth in intervals of around eight years, but the most recent attacks have been more frequent. Two types of Nova have appeared in the series so far: the Type-R Novas ("R" standing for "Resolver"), and the Type-S Novas ("S" standing for "Supreme"). They have the ability to "freeze" anything within its radius, and only by attacking the core (which must be exposed first) can they be defeated. They recently exhibited the ability to fire a high-powered energy beam from its core as well as the ability to absorb an individual and turning them into Nova-human hybrids under their control.
- Stigma (聖痕, Seikon)
- A special tissue created by reverse-engineering from the Novas that gives powers to Pandoras and Limiters alike.[volume & issue needed] Usually these tissues are implanted into the user's back, but some individuals, like the Aoi siblings, possess a high quantity of Stigma tissue inside their bodies too, giving them special abilities. This is known as a Stigma Body (聖痕体, Seikontai). Due to the fact that Stigmata came from the Nova, there is a chance it can take over its user and turn them into a Nova-human hybrid called Nova Form (ノヴァフォーム, Nova Fōmu).[volume & issue needed]
- Accel Turn (アクセルターン, Akuseru Tān)
- One of the two High-End Skills (ハイエンドスキル, Hai Endo Sukiru) developed by Kazuha Aoi which increases a Pandora's speed, allowing for quick evasive maneuvers and high-speed attacks. Variations include Double Accel (ダブルアクセル, Daburu Akuseru), Triple Accel (トリプルアクセル, Toripuru Akuseru), and Quadruple Accel (クワトロフルアクセル, Kuwatorofuru Akuseru), which are used by higher-ranking Pandoras. Some weaknesses for the Accel Turn is that the Pandora is left open for counterattack if she is not quick enough and the lag time between turns; if a Pandora's lag time between turns is too long, she can easily be stopped by a Pandora of greater skill. Satellizer, Arnett, and Cassie are well-known users of this technique, with Cassie being the most skilled.
- Tempest Turn (テンペストターン, Tenpesuto Tān)
- A High-End Skill which allows a Pandora to create four copies of herself and attack simultaneously from all angles. Cleo and Ingrid, as well as Lana and Charles, are proficient users of this technique, with Charles being the most advanced. In this case, she can create up to ten copies of herself with this technique, unlike others who can only create four.
