"Swagger Jagger" is the first single by English singer, Cher Lloyd, taken from her upcoming debut studio album Sticks + Stones. It was released on 31 July 2011. The song was written by the two production teams The Runners and The Monarch with The Strangerz, Petr Brdicko, Cher Lloyd, and Autumn Rowe, and it was produced by the The Runners and The Monarch. It debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and at number two in Ireland. The music video was released on 1 July 2011.

Background

"Swagger Jagger" received its first airplay on 20 June 2011.[1] The single was leaked onto the internet on 15 June, but this version was later confirmed as only the demo of the track on Lloyd's Twitter account.[2][3]

Lloyd performed the song on T4 on the Beach and also performed at the Leeds Aire FM Party in the Park and Key 103 Live Manchester, both on the day of release of her debut single.[4] and on the 18th August 2011 Kerry Katona entered the Celebrity Big Brother 2011 (UK) House to an edited version of Chers song.

Critical reception

The song has received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. Initial reviews compared the song to the Christmas carol "Little Donkey".[5] Robert Copsey of Digital Spy gave the song four out of five stars writing, "Her debut single does little to change that, accusing her "haterz" of pilfering her wildly cherished swagger - the same people who are also looking, tweeting, youtubing and generally social media-baiting her. 'I can't stop, it's what I'm gon' be/ My swagger's in check,' she brattishly sing-speaks over a chunky schoolyard beat and squiggly club synths." He also noted similarities between the song's chorus and the American western folk ballad "Oh My Darling, Clementine" (1884),[6] an opinion shared by users at sample archive, whosampled.com. [7]

In a negative review, Sabotagetimes.com said of the track: "Coming across like a sink estate answer to the Black Eyed Peas, the track combines a shouty, tuneless verse with a chorus that riffs on ‘Oh My Darling Clementine’. All blended together with the subtlety of a cut-and-shut Vauxhall Nova."[8]

Chart performance

"Swagger Jagger" debuted at number two in Ireland on the issue dated 4 August 2011.[9] On 7 August 2011 the song debuted at Number One in the United Kingdom. The song was knocked off the top spot by Nero's "Promises" on 14 August to number 3.
