Bangkok Patana School or "BPS" is a British International School located in Bangkok, Thailand.[1] Established in 1957, BPS offers education in the British tradition to over 2200 pupils including children and young adults from around 60 nations.

Bangkok Patana School is situated on Sukhumvit 105 road, in Bangkok.

Education

Bangkok Patana School is the British International School of Bangkok. It uses the British schooling system up to Year 11.

Year 11 ends with the IGCSE examinations and at Keystage 5 (Year 12 and 13,) it offers the IB Diploma instead of the A Levels.

The school is divided into two sections, the Primary school, which is currently headed by Mrs. Clare Sharp, (Nursery-Year 6) and the Secondary school, which is currently headed by Mr. Mick Smith (Year 7-Year 13).

Bangkok Patana School is affiliated with the Council of International Schools.

Bangkok Patana's current headmaster is Mr. Matt Mills, from New Zealand.

Uniform

The Secondary uniform consists of black trousers or skirt (and skorts), and a choice of either a white, maroon or a navy blue polo shirt. In the Primary (Elementary) school, the girls wear shorts or skirt with a similar top. The colours are blue, red or pink. The boys have to wear a white shirt with blue shorts. All students must wear white socks and black leather shoes. Year 12 and 13 do not wear a specified uniform but conform to a strict dress code. The house T-shirts consists of four different colours relating to their specific house which are blue, red, yellow and green. Those four colours stand for Phuket, Samui, Lanta and Chang.

Clubs

Events

Tiger Spirit Day, International Day, Fun Day, Loy Kratong, Christmas Assemblies, Songkran Celebrations. Throughout the year, the school hosts events such as busking day (Primary only), bring and buy sales, bake sales, and concerts. Events do not interrupt the school week include dance competitions, school plays, and secondary dances. Often the music department hosts concerts pertaining to a particular style of music; these include the Patana Jazz and Blues, Patana Classic, Patana Plugged and Patana Unplugged, Summer Concerts, Christmas Concerts, etc.

House system

The House system is currently in use at the school. Students are assigned to one of four houses which are named after famous islands of Thailand. The houses compete for points which determine the winning house at the end of each academic year. These points can be awarded for individual academic achievements, inter-house sporting competitions, talent shows, quizzes and also a swimming gala. Students vote in new house representatives each year, including representatives (one male and one female student) for each year group and also representatives for the entire house.

The houses are as follows:

  • Lanta. House colour: Yellow
  • Samui. House colour: Red
  • Chang. House colour: Green
  • Phuket. House colour: Blue

Sports

The sports teams in the school compete under the name and mascot: Tigers. Each sports teams use variations of the Tiger name, such as the tiger sharks for the swim team. Teams compete at high levels, including tournaments like BISAC, SEASAC and FOBISSEA even at the Varsity level in sports like Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Softball, Swimming, Badminton and Athletics. Bangkok Patana School opened their new sports hall to comembrate their 50th anniversary, which was opened by HRH the Princess of Thailand. The school has achieved a lot of awards with one of the greatest sports teams in Bangkok. The sport team is highly known as a great competitor against some other really good challenging schools. Bangkok Patana School along with other schools from around South-East Asia compete in the FOBISSEA tournament every year. They have a range of, U9, U11, U13, U15, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Every year Bangkok Patana also has a Primary vs. Secondary teachers football match.

New Developments

Bangkok Patana School constructed a new Arts Centre which was finished in Autumn 2010. A section from the weekly Patana newsletter states:

"The new building will have a floor space of just under 10,000 square metres over three levels and will include a 600-seat tiered auditorium, 300-seat black box auditorium, drama rooms, recording studio, music teaching rooms and individual practice rooms, art rooms and photography darkroom."

Other new installments include a new Y5-Y6 Block, conference centre and new primary and secondary libraries.
