Halo 4 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game for the Xbox 360 console. Whereas previous Halo games were developed by Bungie, Halo 4 was developed by 343 Industries, a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios.[3][4] Halo 4 is the first installment in a new trilogy of Halo series games, named the "Reclaimer Trilogy".[4] The game begins 4 years after the ending of Halo 3, and marks the return of the Master Chief as the main protagonist, and the AI Cortana.[5][6]

Halo 4 was officially announced on June 4, 2011, at E3 2011.[7] Its development was revealed at the same time as Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.[7] On September 26, 2012, it was announced that the game's development was complete.[8] The game is set for a worldwide release on November 6, 2012,[9][10] with the exception of Japan where the game will be released on November 8, 2012.[11]

Gameplay

Modes

Halo 4's story or campaign mode can be played through alone or cooperatively with up to three other players.[11] Unlike in Halo 3 cooperative campaign where each player takes the role of a different character, in Halo 4 all players will play as Master Chief.[11]

Halo 4 will feature a new story-driven game mode, titled "Spartan Ops", it can be played solo or cooperatively with up to three other players.[12] It serves as a replacement for the Firefight game mode that featured in Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST.[12] Season one of Spartan Ops will deliver five new objective-based missions and cinematics each week over a period of ten weeks to players.[13]

Halo 4 will also include Forge, a map-editing tool, that was first featured in Halo 3.[1]

In the multiplayer component of Halo 4, titled Infinity multiplayer, players will build their own custom Spartan-IV super-soldier and advance in their multiplayer career which spans across gameplay in War Games, Spartan Ops, Forge and Theater.[14] Players can advance through ranks by earning experience (or XP) by playing War Games, Spartan Ops, using Forge, and by completing both challenges and commendations.[14] Commendations and challenges were first featured in Halo: Reach, both have been expanded in Halo 4.[14] At each rank players earn Spartan Points (SP), which are used to purchase gameplay items such as weapons, armor abilities and various upgrades for personal loadouts.[14] Once players attain rank SR-50 they can enlist into one of the eight available Specializations, enabling players to unlock further customisation for their Spartan.[14] Each Specialization is composed of ten ranks, players cannot switch their Specialization until they complete it.[14] Items for visual customisation are also unlocked by gaining ranks, mastering commendations and completing certain goals.[14]

Plot

Halo 4 marks the return of the Master Chief, John-117, as a playable protagonist for the first time since 2007's Halo 3.[15][4] Having been lost in space since the finale of Halo 3, Master Chief and Cortana, adrift aboard the wreckage of the UNSC frigate Forward Unto Dawn, find themselves near a mysterious Forerunner planet.[6][16] A key plot point will involve changes to Cortana and how her exposure to Halo and her operation beyond her natural lifespan may have contributed to her becoming "rampant", a mental state of aged AIs akin to insanity, and which normally results in the 'death' of the AI.[17] The campaign will mainly take place on the artificial forerunner planet of Requiem.[5][18]

The story of Halo 4 will be focused less on the Halo series' traditional straightforward first-person shooter genre, instead relying more on mystery, exploration and discovery.[19] Developers described the game as being grand in scope and scale. Forerunner elements will be featured extensively in the game's environment. Developers also suggested that the game will reveal how humanity and the UNSC have adapted to the galaxy after the end of their war with the Covenant, particularly how they have co-opted Forerunner technology.[16]

Unlike the original trilogy, the story has been designed to be part of a three-game arc from the beginning. In addition, developer 343 Industries is aiming for "a more complete connectivity between all of their future media than before",[16] and the Forerunner Saga novel Halo: Primordium, the post-war novel Halo: Glasslands, and the terminals in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, will "definitely" have "resonant connections" to Halo 4's story.[16] Little information has been released regarding the trilogy storyline, but developers have claimed that Halo 5 will be a much darker title before the conflict is resolved in Halo 6.[6]

Development

Halo 4 was developed by 343 Industries, a developer that was established in 2007 by Microsoft Studios to oversee the Halo universe following Bungie's separation from Microsoft Studios. The studio's creative team, which includes nearly 200 people, were developing the game since at least 2009 and was led by creative director Josh Holmes.[16] The game will utilize much of the "sandbox" that has been featured across all six prior Halo games and other media, in addition to introducing new characters, weapons, vehicles, and other elements.[16] The game's "sandbox" and overall style are meant to be more evocative of Halo: Combat Evolved than of later installments.[6] The game engine used is a heavily modified version of the engine established by Bungie.[20] Unlike previous games in the Halo series, Halo 4 runs natively in 720p resolution.[20]

Master Chief's character will also be explored and developed in more depth than in the prior games, and the relationship between John and Cortana will be heavily featured and greatly expanded. The new design of the Master Chief's armor has undergone a number of iterations, and it has been confirmed that the design from the announcement trailer is not the final version.[16] On December 2, 2011, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor said that both Master Chief and Cortana will undergo "radical" changes in appearance for the new game, some of them attributed to better graphics and others to story elements.[17]

The art director for Halo 4 is Kenneth Scott. He described the visual style of Halo 4 as being more ingrained in the expanded universe fiction, and more "mature" than before. With the game's increased focus on the Forerunners, the artists have invested heavily into the look and feel of Forerunner technology. It has also been stated that there will be more diversity to Forerunner structures, including fully active Forerunner technology as opposed to the mostly inert and abandoned structures seen in the earlier games.[16]

On July 7, 2012, a pre-release build of Halo 4's Forge mode was revealed at the Rooster Teeth Expo which took place at the Austin Convention Center.[1][21] The Forge mode was developed by Certain Affinity, a development team that has worked alongside Bungie and 343 Industries on previous Halo titles.[1] On September 26, 2012, Frank O'Connor announced that the game's development was complete.[8]

Audio

On April 11, 2012, it was announced that British record producer and score composer; Neil Davidge would be the lead composer for the Halo 4 Original Soundtrack.[22] Davidge is best known for his work as a co-writer and producer for Massive Attack, and has also composed the scores for a number of films.[23] Davidge intends to add "a touch of romance" to the score as well as adding more electronic sounds whilst still keeping it grounded in the Halo universe.[24][25]

Sotaro Tojima, best known for his work on Konami's Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, serves as Halo 4's audio director.[16] The team has performed many live audio recording sessions, several of which occurred in Tasmania, Australia. Some of these recording sessions have taken place in generally inhospitable environments, such as underwater, in fire, and in ice, through the use of specially designed microphones;[16] other recording sessions have utilized "home made" explosives.[26] Tojima intends for the game's audio to be clearly grounded in the Halo universe, while also having a more realistic quality than in past titles.[16]

Cast

Voice actors Steve Downes and Jen Taylor will reprise their roles in Halo 4 as Master Chief and Cortana respectively.[27] Actor Mark Rolston voices Captain Andrew Del Rio.[28][29] Additional voices that have also been confirmed include Conan O'Brien, Andy Richter and Jason Bradbury.[30][31] Bruce Thomas is the performance capture actor playing the role of Master Chief and actress Mackenzie Mason will be playing the role of Cortana.[27] Facial motion capture is utilized to capture the facial expressions of actors where applicable.[27]

Release

Halo 4 will be released worldwide on November 6, 2012,[9][10] with the exception of Japan where the game will be released on November 8, 2012.[11] The game itself comes on two discs and requires 4GB of available storage space either on a 8GB USB flash drive or Xbox 360 hard drive to play the multiplayer component.[2][20] It is available in two separate retail versions, branded as "Standard" and "Limited" editions, [32][33] The Limited Edition will include access to future downloadable content in the form of three competitive multiplayer map packs, containing a total of nine maps.[32][33] It will also include digital items for Xbox 360 avatars and in-game Spartan-IVs as well as early access to customization options.[32][33] A 90-minute extended version of the live-action digital series, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and a UNSC Infinity Briefing Packet are also included with the Limited Edition version.[32][33]

On July 14, 2012, at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International, Microsoft announced the release of the Xbox 360 Limited Edition Halo 4 console bundle that would launch on November 6, 2012.[34][35] The bundle features two custom designed controllers, a standard edition of Halo 4, a wired headset, exclusive downloadable content and a Halo 4-themed Xbox 360 containing a 320GB hard drive.[34][35] It was also announced that Microsoft would be releasing a standalone Xbox 360 Halo 4 Limited Edition wireless controller featuring a different design to the one included in the console bundle.[34][35]

On October 12, 2012, Microsoft reported that their security teams and law enforcement were investigating the possibility of Halo 4 content being leaked on the internet.[36] On October 13, 2012, Jessica Shea, Community Manager at 343 Industries, warned fans to be wary of Halo 4 spoilers that have been posted on the internet.[37][38] On October 13, 2012, at New York Comic Con, Frank O'Connor stated that leaks of the game and footage won't have any impact on how the game is released or marketed and that piracy of high-profile games is sort of inevitable.[39]

Promotion

On January 19, 2012, McFarlane Toys announced that they would be creating action figures for Halo 4, bringing new characters, weapons and vehicles from the video game to the fans.[40] McFarlane Toys CEO and founder, Todd McFarlane said that he was "really excited to be working with the all-star team of 343 Industries".[40] McFarlane also stated that they would continue and expand their previous figure line which would be rebranded as Halo Universe.[40] Funko also are also releasing Master Chief, Cortana and Spartan-IV figures for their Pop! Vinyl toyline on November 8, 2012.[41] On June 11, 2012, Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. announced that they had signed a deal with Microsoft Studios to create a Halo 4-branded gaming headset that were shipped on October 30, 2012.[42][43][44]

Microsoft once again partnered up with PepsiCo, having done so previously while promoting Halo 3.[14][45] In the United States players are able to earn double experience in Halo 4 by purchasing Mountain Dew and Doritos and then redeeming product codes found on the packaging.[14][45] Players will be able to redeem product codes from October 15, 2012, on websites that PepsiCo have set up for the promotion.[14][45] In the United Kingdom, a promotion will run from 24 September, 2012, until December 4, 2012, where purchasers of Mountain Dew are able to redeem codes to have a chance of winning copies of Halo 4, Xbox 360 avatar items and a trip to Seattle to attend a tour around the studio of 343 Industries.[46][47] Microsoft also partnered with Pizza Hut branches in the United Kingdom.[48] People who entered a contest via an official website have a chance to win Halo 4-themed prizes.[48] The contest is open from October 22, 2012, until December 30, 2012.[48] Also, entering participants receive a free code for a Halo 4 Xbox 360 avatar outfit.[48]

At E3 2012, the presentation of Halo 4 was preceded with a live-action segment called "The Commissioning".[49] The video was directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and filmed over two and a half days, with four weeks of post-production and visual effects were added by Method Studios.[49] The video shows the UNSC Infinity vessel being pulled within the confines of the planet Requiem.[28][29] Mark Rolston who is the voice actor for Captain Andrew Del Rio in game, portrays the Captain in the live-action video.[28][29]

On October 18, 2012, the Halo 4 launch trailer, titled "Scanned", was revealed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.[50] The trailer was produced by David Fincher and directed by Tim Miller.[50] The trailer features both CGI and live-action sequences.[50][51] It shows Master Chief, bounded by a force shield, being approached by an enemy.[51] The enemy moves to towards John, scanning his mind to find the source of his strength and search for weaknesses.[51] A live-action sequence proceeds with flashbacks of John's past; showing him being kidnapped as a child, the Spartan-II augmentation procedure and him being suited into his MJOLNIR armor.[51] The trailer then shows John attacking Promethean Knights, before returning to the scene of him bounded and being faced by his enemy.[51] On October 23, 2012, the Halo 4 launch gameplay trailer was revealed.[52]

On October 31, 2012, Microsoft and government-owned organization Liechtenstein Marketing transformed the countryside of Liechtenstein for a special live-action event for fans and members of the press.[53][54][55] The Gutenberg Castle was transformed into a military fortification where guests tried out Halo 4 for the first time.[53][54][55] A nearby countryside had a United Nations Space Command military camp installed and mining quarry was transformed into a battleground where fifteen actors played out a two hour long adventure.[53][54][55]

Forward Unto Dawn

On April 30, 2012, it was announced that a web series, titled Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, would play on Machinima Prime and Halo Waypoint during the weeks leading up to the release for Halo 4.[56][57] The series debuted on October 5, 2012, and will contain five 15-minute live-action shorts.[56][11][57][58][59] It is directed by Stewart Hendler and the project is set to be Microsoft's largest investment in a live-action promotion.[56][57][58] The series is set 20 years before the events of Halo 4 at the beginning of the Human/Covenant war.[56][11] The plot is centered around the character Thomas Lasky, who will appear in the video game, he is primarily portrayed by Australian actor Tom Green in the live-action series.[59] The series will also tie in with the plot of the Halo 4 campaign and Spartan Ops mode.[56][11] The Master Chief will also make an appearance in the series, he is played by actor Daniel Cudmore.[56][59]

Downloadable content

Halo 4 will support downloadable content (DLC), which will be available to download via Xbox Live.[60] Currently three War Games map packs, each containing three maps, are planned for release.[60] The first map package is due for release in December 2012, it is titled the "Crimson Map Pack" and contains the maps: "Wreckage", "Harvest" and "Shatter".[60] The second collection, titled the "Majestic Map Pack", is set for release in February 2013, and it contains the maps: "Landfall", "Monolith" and "Skyline".[60] The third set of maps is titled the "Castle Map Pack" and is set for release in April 2013, it contains the maps: "Daybreak", "Outcast" and "Perdition".[60] The map packs can be purchased individually or by acquiring the Halo 4 War Games Pass which will give access to all three of the forthcoming map packs.[60] The pass is included in the Limited Edition version of the game and is available to purchase on the Xbox Live Marketplace.[60]

Reception

Halo 4 received critical acclaim upon its release. On aggregate review websites GameRankings and Metacritic, the game holds scores of 89.54% and 90 out of 100, respectively.[61][62]

Ryan McCaffrey of IGN gave a score of 9.8, calling Halo 4 "a bar-raising triumph for the entire first-person shooter genre. And just how new developer 343 Industries has done it will surprise, delight, and excite you." The lighting, movements, and animations were well-praised, as well as Neil Davidge's work as the composer for Halo 4, noting it as a "bold shift," but stated that the music is "complementary rather than additive." Also, the traditional "monk chants" that are present in Halo soundtracks are gone.

McCaffrey lauded the Campaign for it's pacing, as well as "deftly mixing on-foot combat, vehicle sequences, quiet story moments, and key Chief-and-Cortana interactions."
