Development

On 2 January 2011, the producer of the previous Dhoom films Aditya Chopra confirmed that the third installment of the Dhoom series would begin principal photography at the end of 2011. Initially, the producers and the lead actor Aamir Khan wanted to release the film on Christmas of 2012,[2] but the plan was scrapped in favor of an early release date in 2013, mainly due to a forecast that a Christmas release would force a rushed post-production schedule, which was unfavorable given the high degree of technicality.[3]

Casting

"I am very excited for Dhoom 3 [...] specially excited because Aamir joins the series as the lead antagonist. His joining the cast completely raises the level of the franchise as he brings forth a high sense of professionalism and perfection.

—Bachchan talking about Khan's casting as the antagonist[4][5]

Aamir Khan was signed on to essay the lead role and the antagonist, while [Abhishek Bachchan] and [Uday Chopra] will reprise their roles as police officers. Rimi Sen, who played the role of Sweety, the wife of ACP Dixit, was offered to play the role again, which she declined because of her decision to not do any "guest appearances"[6] Katrina Kaif was signed on as the lead heroine, starring opposite Khan.[2] Dhoom 3 will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, replacing Sanjay Gadhvi who directed the two previous films and declined to return to direct the third.[2] Both the lead actors took up special preparations for the roles that they are playing. Two more villainous roles were decided by Director and were to play by Ranveer Singh and Jacqueline Fernandez but the Producer later refused and denied this. Khan reportedly learnt ballet,[7] aerobatics[8] and French technique of parkour,[9] a method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency, while Kaif took paragliding training and singing lessons.[10] Bachchan reportedly lost nine kilos of weight to prepare for his role in the film.[11]

Filming

Filming for the film was expected to kick-start from November 2011, with Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra facing the camera first,[12] but due to the pregnancy of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, wife of lead actor Abhishek Bachchan and also the main actress in the previous film Dhoom 2, it got postponed till January as Bachchan requested for the paternity leave so that he can be with Aishwarya during pregnancy and spend some time with the newly born baby and Aditya Chopra granted him the leave happily. Furthermore in January due to the prior commitments of Aamir Khan with his TV show Satyamev Jayate it was pushed forward to June. But again in June, Aamir Postponed the filming for himself in July as his hair mop was not ready and he wanted some more time to maintain his body and look for the role of a gymast. he wanted to look more slimmer, leaner and fitter than ever.[13] But finally the filming commenced with Jackie Shroff and the child artist who is playing the role of childhood Aamir Khan on 8 June 2012 at Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai.[14] Aamir Khan joined the filming in July and filmed for only 5 days at Yash Raj Studios as his major portions would be shot in Chicago, U.S.A. The film is set to hit cinemas sometime in 2013. Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra flew to the U.S on 4 August to complete a mammoth 3 month schedule.

3D Format

Reportedly Aditya Chopra, the producer of the film, wanted to make the film in 3D, feeling that the success of Haunted, Ra.One, Don 2 & Dangerous Ishq, showed that Indian audiences have opened up to 3D cinema viewing, however actor Aamir Khan was not convinced as he thinks "making a 3D film needs more expertise".[15] Some sources still maintain that the film will release in 3D.[16] However, as of September 2012, there is no conformation of a 3-D release from YRF studios.

IMAX Format

Dhoom 3 will be the first Indian film to be released for IMAX screens in India. It will be played on a limited number of enhanced IMAX screens using the Digital Media Remastering (DMR) technology, besides of course in 2D and 3D versions.Mail Today reported on Friday, the international company IMAX Corporation plans to open 14 specialized theatres all across India by 2014. These theatres will have IMAX screens that allow films to be projected on a far more gigantic scale than the big screen has ever known.

During his visit on Thursday, Greg Foster, chairman and president, IMAX Filmed Entertainment, revealed his company's immediate plans as far as India is concerned. Foster said IMAX was collaborating with several big Bollywood filmmakers to expand base for the IMAX technology.

"IMAX symbolises a high-quality film watching experience and this vision of the company works well with the ethos of YRF, which has been synonymous with film entertainment in India over the last four decades. We are indeed happy to announce our association with Dhoom 3," Yash Chopra said.

"This has added to the anticipated thrill that Dhoom 3 promises. The IMAX experience will give the film an all-new edgeof-the-seat dimension," Chopra added.

"With its rivetting action set pieces, global locales and stunning visuals, it is an ideal film to take advantage of our immersive format as we begin our initiative with Indian-language/Bollywood films," Foster said.

Soundtrack

It was announced that the composer of Dhoom and Dhoom 2, Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment .[17]

"If you ask anyone about my next release .. everyone seems to be talking about Dhoom 3 only and honestly, we haven’t even shot a single frame of the film.

—Khan talking on the hype of the film prior to its production[18]

Even prior to the beginning of the principal photography the film enjoyed a widespread media coverage.[19][20] Because of the box office success [21] and positive reviews from audiences [22][23] for Dhoom 2, the previous installment in the Dhoom series, the sequel had been anticipated.
