dup templates

When the page already has the template redirect {{CO}}, the collapsible option does not recognize it and adds a duplicate {{collapsible option}}.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:07, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

okay, fixed it here. if more redirects are created, I will have to add each one. Frietjes (talk) 15:48, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any way to have a bot go back and remove dups or to run a report that shows pages that include the template and the redirect. I don't know how many times I did not notice the redundancy?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:29, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
given that there are fewer than 100 uses of the redirect, you could just check them manually? Frietjes (talk) 16:38, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Red XN Still not fixed according to this edit.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:05, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

okay, there was a typo, it's now fixed. whoever was adding this {{CO}} template clearly didn't understand why, since most of the transclusions were not accompanied by a state parameter. Frietjes (talk) 16:57, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox NFL player

Over the weekend, I saw your insertion of the tracking code into the Infobox NFL player template to identify those articles in which more than one of the "position" parameters were being used. Do you have the ability to similarly identify all of those articles where any of the presently existing coaching parameters are being used? I believe it would be helpful if we could identify all existing instances of current coaches/former players that are using the Infobox NFL player template. Specifically, it should help focus the discussion on the present flaws in the template's layout, and also help focus the discussion as to which existing parameters should be eliminated as overkill and to better make room for the coaching parameters. Please let me know if you have the ability to do this. Regards, Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:18, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

yes, I could track any use of the coach parameters in {{infobox NFL player}}. I was planning on doing this as part of the merger before it was interrupted. Frietjes (talk) 16:56, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes, please insert the tracking code, so we can identify and examine those articles that currently use the coaching parameters presently included within Infobox NFL player. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:22, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
track with Category:NFL player with coaching information. will take some time for cache to catch up and the category to fill. Frietjes (talk) 20:34, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the tracking category is now fully populated with 377 player-coach articles. I will be reviewing them over the next several days to create a list of issues to be addressed in a merged template. Also, did you see my query in the TfD discussion for Infobox college baseball team regarding the creation of mock-ups? Creating a mock-up or two would probably be helpful in illustrating the configuration and presentation of data in a merged player-coach template, as well as demonstrating the need to prioritize data and potentially remove certain non-essential parameters. Also, I would like to explore the possibility of a "type=" parameter that would toggle and permit us to use only certain parameters when configured for a current player or current coach, thus effectively creating subclasses of the same template. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:00, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I could mock-up a merge of any pair of the baseball template, or provide an assessment of how easy it would be to merge them in a sane manner. I probably won't respond on the TfD thread, just to avoid the drama. I am personally tired of the holding cell being filled with template mergers that were nominated by editors who have no idea how to actually merge templates. Now TfD is generally backlogged due to Plastikspork taking a wikibreak. Closing TfDs and merging templates is really a thankless job. but, I will finish the sandbox mock-up of the merger for NFL coach sometime this weekend to try to move that along. Frietjes (talk) 21:37, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes, thank you for offering to do a mock-up for the merged baseball infoboxes, but we probably don't need one to accomplish the merge of the "college baseball" and "collegiate baseball" infoboxes (talk about "redundant"). After review, that particular combination may not even require any changes to the surviving template. More like a manual migration to template No. 1, followed by a deletion of template No. 2. I would be grateful if you would tweak your original November 4th TfD to specify merging "collegiate baseball" into "college baseball," but I think that's likely headed in that direction already.
After we see where the larger multi-template baseball infobox discussion is going, your mock-up skills may be useful in convincing some of the baseball editors to merge some of the other baseball-related templates. That may require some thrashing about on the baseball WikiProject talk page to get there, because I don't see Andy's current TfD proposals going anywhere. If nothing else, Andy's TfD en masse has at least drawn the attention of WikiProject Baseball to the subject. It's a very active project, and I expect that several of the identified templates will eventually be merged (if not just replaced with another more common template) after discussion.
I will be very interested to see your mock-up of the merged NFL player-coach infobox when it's ready. As I said, I think it will be a key element in convincing CFB and NFL editors to prioritize data, hopefully eliminate some of the less important parameters that will contribute to a ridiculously long combined infobox, and merge the player and coach data in a compact, presentable manner. BTW, did you understand my question about a "type=coach" or "type=player" parameter that would only permit us to toggle certain parameters for current coaches or players? Is that possible? In any event, once we have something to show, perhaps with several variants, we can go about notifying the individual CFB and NFL editors and soliciting their opinions.
Looking down the road a ways, at some point I would like to explore a potential merge of most of the various college sports infoboxes. The commonality of parameters is relatively high, and having a standardized graphic presentation would be better than the hodge-podge we have. Here again, I think the ability to toggle certain parameters that are specific to certain sports would be helpful and allow us to use a single template in multiple variants. The example would be "Infobox college sports team," that could then enable certain sport-specific parameters by toggling "type=baseball," "type=lacrosse," "type=swimming," "type=volleyball," etc. I know that it may seem odd to you, but there is actually a much higher degree of parameter commonality between college baseball and college basketball than there is between college baseball and professional baseball because of the affiliated universities and conferences, as well as the close similarity in the way conference tournaments and NCAA playoffs are structured. Template:Infobox dava

Thank you very much for the improvement of Template:Infobox dava! Saturnian (talk) 21:42, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for template help, request

Thanks for the help at Template:Infobox legislature and at Iowa Senate and Iowa House of Representatives. I can usually figure my own way around, but sometimes that little push helps! Any chance you could take a look at the request at Template talk:Infobox officeholder#Request? My fix broke something else (see here), but maybe you have an idea? --Philosopher Let us reason together. 00:00, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

will look within the next 24 hours. Frietjes (talk) 00:23, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template formatting question

Hello again. I passed by Template:Former German colonies, wondered how to remove the gaps around the continent names and then thought of you. Do you see them too – and know how to remove them, i.e. fill in the backgrounds? If so, give me the key and I'll amend the template accordingly. Best wishes, 213.246.91.158 (talk) 01:09, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

did that fix it? Frietjes (talk) 01:12, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, no (after reloading page afresh). Maybe it's one of those browser things – I'm using a Firefox-based one. 213.246.91.158 (talk) 02:21, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
...I think I know the cause now: the combined height of the flag and coat of arms on the righthand side of the template. I don't feel either should be removed, though. Perhaps it might be possible to rework the master Navbox template to prevent backgrounds from stretching to fill an image or images' combined height. (In other words, start from a field whose height is the height generated by the image or images, then vertically-align the Navbox accordingly without stretching it to fill that height.) 213.246.91.158 (talk) 06:22, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
