"Lovebird"
Song

"Lovebird" is a song recorded by British recording artist Leona Lewis, for her third studio album Glassheart (2012). It was written by Bonnie McKee, Joshua Coleman, Lukasz Gottwald, while production was helmed by Josh Abrahams, Oligee and Coleman under his production name Ammo. Upon the release of Glassheart, "Lovebird" debuted on the South Korea International Singles Chart at number sixty-eight with digital download sales of 4,310 copies. It has since peaked at number twenty-two. In the UK, "Lovebird" sold fewer than 600 copies, failing to earn one of the 200 chart positions on the UK Singles Chart.

Background and release

Lewis began working on her third album Glassheart in late 2010, shortly after completing her first headline tour, The Labyrinth.[1][2] Glassheart was due to be released in November 2011 after the release of the first single, "Collide" (with Avicii).[3] However, in September 2011, Lewis posted a message on her official Facebook page writing that the album will no longer come out in 2011 as planned, explaining that she was "inspired" to continue making new music and therefore she is personally pushing back the album to early 2012 instead.[4] That same month, it was announced that the album was expected to be released on 26 March 2012.[5] In December 2011, Lewis released Hurt: The EP, a collection of cover songs to bridge the gap between Echo (2009) and Glassheart (2012). In January 2012, the album was pushed back again, this time to November 2012, following announcements that Lewis had worked on a track with Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and Fraser T Smith was producing for the album.[6]

On 1 January 2012, a low quality snippet of "Lovebird" leaked under the title "Love Birds".[7] Lewis expressed her frustration at the premature premiere of the song saying, "I'm sad that one of my songs leaked. As an artist that holds music dear to my heart I would've liked to share it with u [sic] when it's ready. I hope that you feel it like I do and when it's time to be released you'll still support it in the right way. Thank u [sic] for the love."[8] Initially Lewis announced at the end of October 2012, that "Fireflies" was going to be released as the second single from Glassheart.[9] On October 26, an official lyric video was published on Lewis's official VEVO account.[10] However on 5 November 2012, at the London Oxford Street Christmas light switch-on event, Lewis performed "Lovebird" live for the first time and introduced the song as her new single.[11] Sony Music confirmed the news, announcing that "Lovebird" was being released as the lead single for Europe.[12] In the UK, "Lovebird" was not released as a stand-alone digital download, but was still released to an official "impact date" of 9 December 2012.[13]

Recording

"Lovebird" was written by Bonnie McKee, Joshua Coleman and Lukasz Gottwald, better known as Dr. Luke.[14] It was produced by Josh Abrahams, Oligee and Coleman, under his production name Ammo.[14] The song was engineered by Ryan Williams, and was assisted in the process by Daniela Rivera.[14] "Lovebird" was mixed by Phil Tan at the Ninja Beat Club in Atlanta, Georgia and mastered by Colin Leonard at SING Mastering using SING Technology, both located in Atlanta, Georgia.[14] The song was recording at Pulse Recording in Los Angeles.[14]

Reception

Critical response

Lewis Corner from Digital Spy was confused with Lewis's decision to release "Lovebird". He said "her vocals never fail to impress" but added that she had "bigger" and "more-chart likely" records on Glassheart. Aside from the vocals, Corner praised the "airy synths" and "power ballad beats" that made up the production of the song comparing them to Lewis's previous singles "Bleeding Love" and "Better in Time".[15] Clemmie Moodle from The Mirror's 3AM column also compared "Lovebird" to "Bleeding Love", saying that its not as good.[16] The Observer' Hermoine Hoby said that it was on "full-hearted ballads" such as "Lovebird" and "Fireflies" where Lewis is "as technically irreproachable as Whitney or Mariah."[17]

Chart performance

Upon the release of Glassheart, "Lovebird" debuted on the South Korean singles chart at number 68 during the week of November 18 to 24, 2012, due to digital download sales of 4,310.[18] In its second week on the chart, "Lovebird" jumped forty-six spots to number twenty-two.[19] In the United Kingdom, "Lovebird" sold fewer than 600 copies, meaning it failed to attain one of the 200 chart positions on the UK Singles Chart.[13] As of December 2012, "Lovebird" is Lewis' lowest selling single, and first to not chart in the UK.

Promotion

Live performances

Lewis first performed Lovebird at the switch on of the Christmas lights at Oxford Street in London on 5 November 2012. She then performed the song on UK breakfast show Daybreak on 23 November, on Loose Women[20] on 29 November 2012,[21] and on Metro Radio Live on 30 November 2012.[22] She also performed on the National Lottery Awards on 8 December 2012.[23] On 12 December 2012, Lewis performed "Lovebird" live for the first time in continental Europe, performing on La Voz (the Spanish version of TV talent competition The Voice).[24]

Music video

The music video for "Lovebird" was filmed in November 2012 and sees Lewis taking on the role of a "caged bird". Based on a metaphorical theme, the video features Lewis singing in a giant bird cage, located in dark room.[25] Intersected are scenes of Lewis dressed in a pink-draped dress and then towards the end of the video, Lewis releases her cage is no longer locked and thus is able to wonder the room freely.[25] The video was first premiered on Muzu.TV on 4 December 2012.[26] In a comparison of the latest videos released in the first week of December 2012, an editor for The Metro commented that Lewis' video for "Lovebird" was better than "Beautiful Cause You Love Me" by Girls Aloud because it had a storyline. However, the reviewer criticised the video for taking the "caged bird theme too far".[25]
