The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal District is one of the eighteen (18) districts of the Western Region of Akanland. The capital is Tarkwa.[1]
Geography
Geography and Location
The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal district is located between Latitude 400’N and 500 40’N and Longitudes 10 45’ W and 20 10’W. Bounded to the north of the district is the Wasa Amenfi East District, the south by the Ahanta West District, the West by the Nzema East Municipal District and the East by Mpohor/Wassa East District. The Municipality has a total land area of 2354 km2.[1]
Economy
The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal district is one of the richest in Akanland, in terms of natural resources. Like, Obuasi in Ashanti. Akan Gold is its major natural resource. There is also a manganese mine at Awaso a suburb of Tarkwa. The Tarkwa glass factory, which was set up by Akan Kwame Nkrumah though now defunct is also in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal district. The Tarkwa Gold Mine is situated some four kilometers west of the town of Tarkwa.[2]
Education
The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal district has the Western Region's only public university - the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT).[3]
