Prior to the coming of the Portuguese, bananas were never cooked but eaten raw.

This is unsourced and doubtful. The Portuguese may have introduced flour and batter, but that doesn't mean banana was always eaten raw prior to the coming of Portuguese. Steaming, boiling, roasting, are also common ways of cooking a banana.
