Freelancer.com

Freelancer.com is a global outsourcing marketplace, founded in 2009 by Matt Barrie. Its headquarters is in Sydney, Australia. The company also has offices in London, Buenos Aires, Manila and Jakarta.

Description

Freelancer.com is one of several marketplace where individuals and small businesses can hire freelancers to perform work. These sites often manage the payments, and make money by charging membership fees and/or take a cut of the payment. Freelancer.com charges projects commission fees between 0% and 10% depending on the user's membership plan: in addition to a free plan, paid plans cost between $5 to $50 per month.[3]

Background

Freelancer.com has acquired several outsourcing marketplaces including GetAFreelancer.com and EUFreelance.com (founded by Magnus Tibell in 2004, Sweden),[4] LimeExchange (a former business of Lime Labs LLC, USA),[5] Scriptlance.com (founded by Rene Trescases in 2001, Canada)[6]- one of the early pioneers in freelancing, Freelancer.de Booking Center (Germany), Freelancer.co.uk (United Kingdom),[7], Webmaster-talk.com (USA), a forum for webmasters,[8] and vWorker (founded by Ian Ippolito, USA).[9]

Freelancer.com categorizes its users as either employers or freelancers. Employers are individuals or companies who wish to outsource their work.[10] Once registered, users are able to bid for projects, or post their own. To help employers decide which user to select, Freelancer allows providers to take exams and prove their skills.

The major categories of work posted on the site are Websites, IT & Software, Mobile Phones & Computing, Writing & Content, Design, Media & Architecture, Data Entry & Admin, Engineering & Science, Product Sourcing and Manufacturing, as well as Sales & Marketing, Business, Accounting, HR & Legal.

As of 8th January 2013, the company has set up 25 regional marketplaces with local language, customer service and currency support including the United States (Global), United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Philippines[11], India[12][13] and Latin America.[14]

Other sites that provide similar services are oDesk, Guru, and Elance.

Confidentiality

Freelancer.com does not allow the employer and sub contractor to exchange direct contact detail or confidential discussion in between them. The contractor and subcontractor has to discuss their ideas and invention in their message board, where freelancer.com staff is constantly watching. This practice will compromise employer's business secrets to freelancer.com staffs, which is not advisable. Their terms of condition (8.1 and 8.2) Clearly states this
