Visalia → Visalia (disambiguation) — Please move "Visalia" to "Visalia (disambiguation)" and then redirect "Visalia" to "Visalia, California" because "Visalia (disambiguation)" already exist, so it makes sense. Thanks-VISALIA2010 (talk) 03:50, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose Why? US naming convention is to have the city at Visalia, California, which is where the city article is at present. Visalia should therefore be the disambiguation page, as it is at present. Can see no possible reason given why we should change that. It appears that this is simply an attempt to bypass the disambiguation page for anyone searching "Visalia", but no indication is given why that is desirable. Visalia → Visalia (disambiguation) – I see that this subject has been brought up before, but I would like to add a few points and make my own request that the contents of this page be moved to "Visalia_(disambiguation)" and that "Visalia" redirect to "Visalia,_California". As "Los Angeles" redirects to "Los Angeles, California" and not "Los_Angeles_(disambiguation)", so should "Visalia" redirect to "Visalia, California". This is according to regular Wikipedia procedure when redirecting to a primary topic.
"Visalia, California", (population 124,000) is literally the ONLY prominent "Visalia" in the world. The other "Visalia" is a former town of 111 people in Kentucky. FORMER town.
Besides the small "Visalia, Kentucky" stub, all other pages on this disambiguation page (and indeed wikipedia) are in reference to "Visalia, California". Some of these pages are even already linked in the disambiguation italics at the top of "Visalia,_California".
The information on this disambiguation page "Visalia" should be moved to the proper location at "Visalia_(disambiguation)". A link has already long been provided to "Visalia_(disambiguation)" at the top of "Visalia,_California".
This is not a request to move "Visalia,_California" to "Visalia", as seems to have been the misunderstanding in the previous request response. This is a request to have "Visalia" automatically redirect to "Visalia,_California", and to have the disambiguation information at "Visalia_(disambiguation)", as per usual wikipedia procedure for a prominent page with many orders of magnitude more traffic than other pages on its disambiguation page.
If whoever is keeping this from redirecting to "Visalia,_California" will not allow the natural change, at the very least "Visalia" should redirect to "Visalia_(disambiguation)" and not the other way round, as disambiguation information is regularly organized in the manner of "_(disambiguation)".
PLEASE change this redirect. It has been broken too long.
Apologies for my repetitive and redundant writing, here. I do not wish to be misunderstood. Apologies if I haven't filled out the proper request... I couldn't figure out the multi-form for this specific necessity. 99.100.208.35 (talk) 19:15, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
- Support. See WP:USPLACE. It is the naming convention of Wikipedia to only use city names that are in the AP handbook, and all others use, City, State. "The cities listed by the AP are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York City, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington." Apteva (talk) 02:39, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- My mistake. I thought it was to move Visalia (the city) to Visalia. Having Visalia redirect to Visalia, California is fine. Apteva (talk) 00:15, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Rebuttal: Once again, there has been a misunderstanding. This is not a request to move Visalia,_California to Visalia. Visalia,_California will remain where it is. The list Apteva provided is a list of cities that do not require the State at the end. Only these largest cities' wikipedia pages can can be located at "name" rather than "name,_state". If only cities listed here applied to all redirects in general, then all of these redirects should be changed: Jacksonville, Austin, Fort Worth, Oakland, Charlotte, El Paso, Nashville, Tucson, Fresno, Bakersfield, Colorado Springs, Modesto, Tulsa, Tampa, Anaheim, Chula Vista, (the list goes on...) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.100.208.35 (talk) 03:25, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- Strong support for move and redirect as proposed. Clear primary topic, of which all other extant topics are subordinate. bd2412 T 15:32, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- Comment shouldn't "Visalia" redirect to "Greater Visalia"? Much as how people refer to cities but mean the metropolitan areas... -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 21:40, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- In either case Visalia needs to be moved to Visalia (disambiguation). In this case I would guess that the city is more common than the other two. Just for giggles, greater V. has been viewed 71 times in the last 90 days, downtown V. 458, and the city 33,391 times... Apteva (talk) 00:15, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
- I absolutely agree, Apteva. Original poster of this request, here; was having trouble signing-in before. I'm a Visalian who has been a major contributor to many of these articles, and Visalia is a unique place generally not known by its "metropolis" or "greater" designations. The metropolitan statistical area, although a governmental designation, is just that and nothing more; it includes the entirety of Tulare County, an expansive agricultural and High Sierra wilderness. "Visalia" should redirect to "Visalia,_California", as the traffic numbers suggest.
