Comment/question: Hi, I'm not sure I understand what "syntax" I've broken. Can you please give me more information so I can make the necessary corrections? Thanks, Deborah Mendez-Wilson 71.218.17.71 (talk) 19:47, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I could probably do so if you could give me some information to go by. The IP address you used for this question was not notified by BracketBot, has not made any other edits, and you didn't tell us what article or what diff this is about. Please provide either the article title or the talk page with the relevant BracketBot notification, preferably the latter. Huon (talk) 02:51, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Diff: [1]

I never replaced Paul Harvey Jr. As Paul's sub I did the show whenever Paul was sick and filled in for Paul Jr. on the AM show when his dad was ill. I also did the memorial shows which lasted two or three weeks after Paul Sr. died. The oft-cited release that I was going to do a permanent show was wrong. This was announced by someone at Citadel but it was news to me and to my agent. I already had my show at KGO and my Real Estate show and had no need or desire to do a daily commentary, especially since making it newsworthy now that I lived in Sn Francisco would mean waking up at Midnight every night which I was glad to do once in awhile when I filled in for the Harveys but never considered doing as a regular thing. the release was put out by a Citadel official who apparently thought I would jump at the chance to do it, but I declined, especially since their offer was profit sharing of the spots. Since Citadel, though they were always perfectly nice to me, was near bankruptcy at that time, I didn't see the future of being a single creditor behind a bunch of banks and investment houses and figured I'd never actually see any money from this arrangement, and so, thanking them for the offer, said, thanks, but no thanks. It is the way of the internet that articles like the one cited never die, but it was wishful thinking on someone's part and not reality.

All BracketBot pointed out was that when you removed part of the source you left other parts, leading to mismatched brackets. I've proposed the page for deletion because there's no indication that Paul Harvey, Jr. is independently notable. Huon (talk) 02:51, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Simeon Simeonov (footballer born 1946)

Thanks for detecting the error in Simeon Simeonov (footballer born 1946). The broken wikilink has been corrected. That's one of the weaknesses of the new visual editor. You can't see all of the characters, some of which are important, as you edit/move/delete text. I'm experimenting with the new visual editor as well as using the old wikimedia editor, which I've used for years. Thanks again. Truthanado (talk) 02:09, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment/question: I don't understand where is the syntax mistake in {|style="width: 0"; margin: auto |- valign="top" |style="width: 15%"|, because I copied and pasted it from another Wikipedia article in order to create 3 singlecharts coast-to-coast (for a better readability).

Synthwave.94 (talk) 19:32, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Arguably this might be a false positive, but you did strange things here. You had nested one copy of {{col-begin}}...{{col-end}} within another, and the code you pasted above is the beginning of yet another table; I believe it means that the first {{col-begin}} doesn't correspond to any {{col-end}} and thus all the rest of the article is placed in one big column. Anyway, the curly bracket at the beginning of that code which didn't correspond to any closing bracket was the cause of the imbalance that summoned the bot. I have simplified the columns, resulting in a slightly different spacing; you may want to either add width= parameters to the {{col-break}} templates (25% for the first column and 30% for the second looked ok to me) or revert outright if you think your version's spacing is preferable. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't want to modify the width of any column, your edit is better than what I did on my last edit on this page. I already use your "model" for other Wikipedia articles. Synthwave.94 (talk) 11:54, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Babagirl2002 (talk) 00:14, 11 July 2013 (UTC) i am not sure if you can hep. how do i add an image to the article i am currently working on "greenwashing"[reply]

That depends on the image. If the image has already been uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons or to Wikipedia itself, the picture tutorial explains how to add it to the article. In short, code like [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|Image caption]] will display a thumbnail of File:Example.jpg with a caption of "Image caption". If you want to upload the image, things get more tricky, especially regarding copyright. If the image has been released under a free license such as the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License you can upload it to the Commons via their Upload Wizard. If the image is not freely licensed, you'll have to check the non-free content criteria to determine whether it can be used; I don't expect non-free images would be acceptable for that article. Non-free images must be uploaded to Wikipedia itself; see WP:File Upload Wizard. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Epinedo (talk) 02:17, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have to disagree with that. There were misplaced parentheses, there are large amounts of what looks like machine-translated content that should be copyedited for gramar, the {{quote box}} templates didn't work alongside images (moving the quotes away from where they should have appeared), and links were broken because they referred to Spanish articles without an English equivalent, or because they referred to non-existing Spanish articles which did have an English equivalent under a different title. I fixed many of those issues, but not the most severe, the problematic translations. That would probably require someone who speaks both Spanish and English. You accidentally removed a square bracket. BracketBot isn't all that competent at determining where a bracket is missing, especially if you have multiple nested brackets, so its message wasn't all that helpful beyond stating that you had modified one square bracket. You fixed the issue yourself with this edit. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

91.125.237.6 (talk) 09:31, 11 July 2013 (UTC) I am new to inserting relevant information to Wikipedia but I have registered as a member. However, I seem to be able to insert an additional reference link info without logging in. I have read the instructions and I am not a computer illiterate but I am unsure as to relevance of logging in if it is not necessary in order to make an edit. Nostrebor48[reply]

There are several advantages to creating (and using) an account as opposed to editing without logging in; see WP:Why create an account?. I'd say the most important is attributability: Your IP address might change; the account will be yours forever, and editing while logged in will attribute all your edits to that one account. That makes it easier for other editors to contact you if they want to thank you or discuss your edits.
Also, some parts of Wikipedia's functionality are available only to registered users, or only to autoconfirmed users whose accounts are at least four days old and have made at least ten edits. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bracketbot: Minor error in message

At User talk:Svpnikhil § July 2013, Bracketbot posted:

...may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "{}"s.
| [[Kolhapur]

The first part says to look for broken brace pairing, while the detail shows the problem is actually with a missing right bracket. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 13:45, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Both parts of BracketBot's message are correct: Svpnikhil added a brace, and we had a surplus bracket in the end. Rightly or wrongly (probably more often wrongly), BracketBot assumes that a brace and a bracket may form a pair, so in BracketBot's opinion adding a brace may lead to a surplus bracket.
