Sekolah Seri Puteri, also known as SSP, is an all-girl boarding school (Sekolah Berasrama Penuh) located in Cyberjaya, Selangor, Malaysia. In 2010, Sekolah Seri Puteri was awarded as prestigious Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi or High Performance School title.[1] The school specializes in wind orchestra and basketball.[2] SSP is among the highest ranked schools in Malaysia, ranking 2nd only to MRSM Tun Ghafar Baba[3] [4]
History
Sekolah Seri Puteri was founded in May 6, 1968, and its original name was known as Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Perempuan Jalan Kolam Ayer (Female Secondary School of Jalan Kolam Ayer), Kuala Lumpur. The school was established to provide secondary education for students across Malaysia. It was built on a 19 acre site that was previously owned by a technical school.[5]
In May 1968, the school received the first group of Form V students consisting of: 144 people, 10 teachers, and three non-academics. They assisted the first principal, Puan Khalidah Adibah Amin. In 1969, the school started contracting teachers from Indonesia to fill in the lacking spaces of local science and mathematics . Student resources were considered less than sufficient in those early years, but eventually showed improvements.[citation needed].
During the first two years, the school achieved 100% graduation success in 1970, for the examination of Malaysia's School Certificate of Education. The first groups of Form VI students, consisting 102 students, were admitted in May 1971. The first group of Form I students were admitted in 1975. In 1975, the Matriculation courses from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia were available, and consisted 88 students. In 1976 the wind orchestra (Seri Puteri Winds) was formed by the third principal; Puan Hajah Badiah Bt Hj. Abdul Manan, and the vice-principal Wilma Lesurf[citation needed].
The school celebrated its tenth anniversary on September 16, 1978 [citation needed]. In this historic event, the fourth school principal, Puan Zainab Bt Haji Mohd. Yusop officially named the school as Sekolah Seri Puteri[citation needed], with a meaning of beauty, dignity, and leadership [citation needed]. The new name was chosen to be inspirational for the students [citation needed]. Along with the name, the school emblem was also introduced in the same year[citation needed]. Since 1978, the school earned a lot of achievements in both academic and extracurricular activities[citation needed].
On May 1, 2003, Sekolah Seri Puteri moved from Jalan Kolam Ayer to a new location in Cyberjaya. The grand opening of the new facility was held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007. The thirteenth Raja Permaisuri Agong, Sultanah Nur Zahirah officiated for the opening. In 2011, the school band, SP Winds, was featured in a flashmob style, reality programme, Refleksi Orkestra, in conjunction with Orkestra RTM 50th Golden Jubilee.[6][7]
In 2013, the school will be the host for Fully Residential School International Symposium (FRSIS), with the theme, "Go Green, Initiatives For The Future," and the keynote speaker was the prime minister of Malaysia, Dato' Sri Najib Razak[citation needed]. In 2013, the bans, SP Winds won the Finale Wind Orchestra[8] and participated in 24thAustralian International Music Festival (AIMF2013) which were held in Sydney, Australia. The school won the gold medal. The school earned a place in the Malaysian Book of Records for three achievements which are: the "first Malaysian government residential school to qualify for the Australian International Music Festival (AIMF)", the "first Malaysian government residential school to play at the Sydney Opera House, Australia", and the "first Malaysian government residential school to win a gold medal in AIMF".[9]
