Students Islamic Organisation of India is the students wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. It SIO website was formed on 19th October 1982.

Introduction

Students Islamic Organisation of India is an Islamic Ideology based students outfit working in India.

SIO's mission as described in its website SIO Indiais to "prepare the students and youth for the reconstruction of the society in the light of Divine Guidance." Its aims and objectives include, Presenting Islamic Da’wah before students and youth and mobilizing students and youth for promoting Virtues and uprooting Evils.

SIO boasts of having an all Indiapresence with more than 2000 units spread mainly in the states like MaharashtraMaharashtra, KeralaKerala, Uttar Pradesh BiharBihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and KarnatakaLink title.

Activities

SIO works for the interfaith dialogueInterfaith and understanding. It conducts interfaith discussions among students belonging to Hindu Muslim and other religious communities in IndiaIndia thereby promoting the communal harmony communalismin the IndianIndia Society. Through seminars, symposia, 'Tea Parties', EidEid ul-fitr Festivals and other such social events that it very frequently organises, it claims to be engaged in bring students together.

SIO works for the educational development of Muslim minorityIslam in India and other backward sectionsBackward Castes of Indian society. It runs libraries, book banks, coaching classes, scholarship schemes etc. and conducts educational and literacy surveys and drives to ensure school admissions in backward localities and slums.

It conducts 'training classes', summer camps, weekly meets and other such events whereby it claims to train students 'morally' and 'ideologically'. It carries out occasional drives and campaigns against campus crimes and 'evils' like ragging etc.

It is criticised by liberal press and intellectuals for its opinions about 'westernisation', 'nudity', obscenity etc. Few years ago, in Hyderabad it was in news for its opposition to the Venga Boys show. It opposes the Valentine Day and organises special programs to awaken studenst against the occasion. Recently it was in news for its campaign against the cyber evils. Ideology

Ideologically SIO toes the line of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. It is mainly influenced by the thoughts and ideas of Moulana MoududiSayyid Abul Ala Maududi.It calims that Islam is a complete way of life and guides humanity to the real success and salvation. Like its parent body it is a well disciplined organisation.Its activities are confined to the peaceful democratic means. Unlike the Students Islamic Movement of India, it is considered a moderate and sane voice of Muslim youth in India. It is for the decommunalisation of Indian polity and society and opposes the right wing Hindu forces. It opposed the American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and opposes the globalisation, economic liberalisation, privatisation of education and other initiatives in the post liberalisation India. It has openly favoured the recent initiatives of indian government to provide quotas for backward sections in the educational institutions.

Opposition

It is opposed by traditionalists within Muslim community for its modern looks and emphasis on politics and education. Among the liberal intellectauls it is viewed as a fundamentalist but non-violent and constructive force. Right wing Hindu organisations accuse them to be the soft face of militant Islam, but their accusation has not so far been substantiated.
