Hi Matthew first i would like to thank you specially for your time and effort. With regard to the comment you posted on my article "Okay, this is a step forward, but we need sources inserted as WP:Footnotes. It should be explicit to the reader which sources verify which statements. So please review WP:Footnotes and apply them to the main body of your article. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:59, 17 September 2013" .I think I have improved the article with suggestions you have given me..Would like you to review when ever you get time and send me feed backs. Also I would like to delete my old revisions if you can guide me.Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Astrangers heart (talkcontribs)

Hi, re this edit. It wasn't that the old draft did not delete - it was moved to article space correctly, but Citation bot (talk · contribs) then trashed the redirect. It actually happens quite a lot. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:10, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article declined

hey Matthew, You recently reviewed my article "Olympic Taekwondo" and declined. You wrote that there was already an article with the same title, but when I clicked on the Link to the article that was supposed to be the existing one it lead me to my article on an other page for creation that already got deleted. So there is no other article with the same title or subject. Do I just resubmit? I'm afraid it will get deleted again.Nelelemke (talk) 05:30, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) This is rather complicated, because the page has been moved several times between namespaces, and not all the moves were accompanied by an appropriate cleanup, which led to other people making possibly the wrong decision about cleanup. I'll try to place the events in chronological order.
I have now partially reverted the last edit to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Olympic Taekwondo so it should now be reviewed properly. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:26, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much! Having some trouble with all the different namespaces^^ Nelelemke (talk) 05:17, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A little guidance?

Matthew Vanitas -- Thanks for reviewing my submitted page on Ramon Ricker. I'd like to make some edits so that the page will meet Wikipedia's standards. I understand the page's problems have to do with footnoting. Can you give me one or two examples from the draft text that need to be footnoted? Then I could go through and either remove those sections or add the appropriate footnotes.

Thank You & Follow-Up Question

Re: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ray Ricker

Matthew Vanitas --

Thanks so much for your feedback. I'll make some changes and add the appropriate citations in order to meet Wikipedia specs.

One follow-up question: Is the Published Works section OK? Or would I have to link to those publishers/outlets as a form of verification? Or could I just link to Ricker's website via the section header, since all of those items would be cited there?

Thanks again, Dennytripp

Minor note: don't forget to always post a link to whatever you want someone to look at, and don't type your name, "sign" is by typing "~" four times in a row, and it'll autosign with time/date/links.
Published Works is fine; you do not want to footnote to the publishers/Amazon/etc because that would be promotional, and generally speaking a book existing or no is considered "self evident" thus not needing evidence. Either there's a 2003 "History of Apples" by J. Smith or there isn't, no controversy there.
Do not link to Ricker's website in the section header, simply provide his official site as the first of your "External links"; that's where everyone will look to see it, there and the infobox should be the only links to his main page, and you can only cite his own page for the most basic non-controversial data like what city his company is based in, or what year founded/born/etc.
So far as Published Works, you want to give the high points but not bewilder the reader, so take a glance at some other musician articles to see how big/small is appropriate. Check out the actual guideline Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lists of works, which should help. Good luck! MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:21, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hi, You just deleted the article I wrote. You should have given me atleast sometime to go through the article and make it encyclopedic. It took some hardwork to write all of it. Now, where do I find the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gragnama (talkcontribs) 20:41, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, a draft that has no encyclopedic value and is clearly and explicitly an advertisement has to be deleted on-sight. If it was a decent basic article that just was too promotional, it would be Declined but left up, but yours was absolutely, positively an advertisement with no informative value at all. I strongly suggest you read WP:Conflict of interest before writing about a company you are involved with. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:45, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Georg Potthast/Nanolinux

Thank you for very quickly reviewing my new page. However, you stated: Declining submission: subject appears to be non-notable (AFCH)

I agree that it may appear non-notable at first glance but I followed this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BasicLinux which is not more notable than mine. Also all the entries in the category the page belongs to are not much different: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mini_Linux_distributions

So please accept the page.

Greetings, the standard reply to "but these other pages are no better" is WP:Other stuff exists. Our goal is not to make you "not the absolute worst" article, but to help you reach basic standards. I'm not a sole voter, so if you want to put an explanatory note at the top explaining why you think you meet WP:Notability and hit re-Submit, feel free. That said, have you ready the policy WP:Notability? I would strongly suggest giving it a basic look-thru so you can make an argument. If you want the 30-second version (which I like) see WP:42 for the absolute basics. Bon chance! MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:48, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edits Made

Matthew,

Thanks again for your feedback and guidance. I've added some citations and removed some of the language that leaned toward promotional/unverifiable. I also cut down the last sections that list Ricker's published works and performances. Just let me know if this meets specs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dennytripp/sandbox

Again, thanks for all you're doing to maintain Wikipedia's standards.

Dennytripp (talk) 19:13, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Denny, while this is better, there are still only 3 sources, and not ones that get into a lot of depth discussing Ricker and his career, impact, etc. Can you dig around a bit more, find some news media coverage that discusses him? Not just "hey, Ricker is playing tomorrow at the Casbah", but things like "Rickers work has heavily influenced a new generation of blues musicians, such as [list of examples], including Tom Thompson, who studied under Ricker and dedicated his first album to his teacher". Substantive discussion of why Ricker matters in the big picture.
As a minor example of great scholarly substantiation for one small part of Ricker's significance, note here a passage where it mentions his role in researching pentatonic scale: gBooks link. What you want to find is more pieces like this from serious media or academics, that we can weave together into a cohesive picture of why you should read about Ricker. Make sense? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:42, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew, If I added some information about the major figures in jazz that Ricker has performed/recorded with, would that lend further credibility? He's played with a lot of big names: Buddy Rich, Stan Getz, Chuck Mangione (the Mangione album Ricker played on won a Grammy), Steely Dan, the Moody Blues, etc. That might illustrate his stature in the music industry.

As always, thanks for your feedback.

Dennytripp (talk) 20:04, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not exactly what we need. Fundamentally it's coverage we need, not someone's independent deduction as to why someone matters. Also applicable to your specific question is the policy: Wikipedia:Notability is not inherited.
It's not us literally saying we don't like Ricker, just saying that it's not an encyclopedia's role to record new/unexplored ideas. Instead, as a WP:Tertiary reference an encyclopedia's job is to take "digested" material that other scholars and writers have analyzed and documented, and we organize and simplify it for the wider reading public. If you discovered a new species of turtle in your backyard and wanted to put it on Wikipedia, we'd be excited for you but note that it wouldn't meet WP:Notability until actual scientists published an article in Turtles Today saying "New Turtlis trippus Species Found in Portland!" You could photograph it and film it all the live long day, blog about it everywhere, but we would need to have the turle info appear in peer-reviewed serious publications before a Tertiary can compile it. My favorite dead-simple breakdown is:

Articles require significant coverage

in reliable sources

that are independent of the subject.
If Ricker meets this, by all means press foward. If he does not, that doesn't at all mean he's not important, it just means there's a "missing link" at the WP:Secondary sources level, so either sources exist but we can't find them, or some music journalists and scholars are missing out on a big story and should hop onto producing more research on Ricker's career. All good? MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:40, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, thanks much. I'll keep digging for some third-party assessments of his work and its importance.

Thanks again, Dennytripp (talk) 20:57, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vail Valley Medical Center

Matthew, I could really use some help creating an article for Vail Valley Medical Center. I am lost in WikiWorld! I'm terrible at code--can you help? I'd really appreciate it, and again, I think Vail Valley Medical Center is a notable institution. Thanks so much. Vvmcwebmaster (talk) 21:09, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Again, bear in mind "not Notable" (in our technical sense) does not mean "it's terrible and we don't like it". It rather means "no reason to have an article on Item A any more than any number of similar things". There are billions of people on the planet, but we set a certain bar as to how significant someone has to be to merit an article, otherwise the whole Wikipedia would be nothing but bios of people's boyfriends, Great Uncle Earl, their cat Sparky, etc. Similarly, we can't cover every elementary school and post office in the nation, but we certainly do cover a school if it's been discussed in the wider press for, say, some famous disaster or success that occurred there, or a post office if it is of great architectural recognition.
Fundamentally: who outside of the immediate Vail area is saying "you know what's a really different hospital? Vail Valley". Being a good hospital and doing good work in the community is great, but to have an article you have to show how it's somehow different from thousands doing the same thing. Is it covered in international medical journals? Do academics discussing unusual successes or methods frequently use Vail Valley as an example?
I may not be on for a few days, so strongly suggest you check in at WP:Teahouse to get advice, but link them this dicussion and link them to your draft when you post, so they can see what has and has not been covered already. MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:17, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Matthew. I posted the following message on the Teahouse: Help! I have written two brief articles on Vail Valley Medical Center, a notable institution in North America's top ski resort, and both articles have been deleted. I am not Wiki-savvy and could use some help creating an article that will meet your guidelines. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've corresponded with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MatthewVanitas, who encouraged me to reach out to the Teahouse.

The early successes of Vail were clearly connected to having a quality hospital to treat injured skiers. One of the hospital's first full-time doctors was President Ford's personal physician.

Today, Vail Valley Medical Center treats patients from around the world, including Aksel Lund Svindal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aksel_Lund_Svindal).

Vail is home to the world-renowned Richard Steadman, MD, who treats famous athletes right in the Vail hospital (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Steadman).

Howard Head Sports Medicine is a service of Vail Valley Medical Center and an official medical provider of the US Ski, Snowboard and Free Skiing Teams (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Ski_Team).

As a hospital, we are not at liberty to disclose the names of our patients, but countless articles, blogs, and social media posts credit Vail Valley Medical Center as a hospital that treats well-known professional and amateur athletes.

The hospital will host Kevin Pearce as part of an injury prevention program sponsored by Vail Valley Medical Center: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Pearce_%28snowboarder%29.

Again, your guidance on getting an article published would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello Alicia! Nobody is "hating" on your article, it simply does not meet Wikipedia guidelines at all.
  • None of your sources meet WP:Reliable sources at all. IMBD is user-generated content, Facebook and Twitter belong to the subject of the article (and anyone can have them, nothing special there), and TopCat appears to be a promotional site, so again not at all WP:Neutral.
  • Your article gives about zero context for why Alexander is important, why her career is significant, why a reader would want to read about her.
  • Lastly, it is a very bad idea to write an article about yourself. Please definitely read our policy WP:Autobiography which explains why you really do not want to be writing your own article about you. MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:57, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I NEED HELP WITH THE ARTICLE: Marie-Jo THIEL — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mic EROHUBIE (talkcontribs) 12:51, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly do you need help with? Saying "I NEED HELP" is not a very helpful way to ask. Have you noticed, looking at the page, how incredibly cluttered all the text is? Did you just copy-paste it from somewhere and not bother trying to fix the formatting to make it appear correctly on Wikipedia. From what I can tell, you have a broken WP:Infobox (the text box at right of a bio that has basic statistics of a person), and also some of your text appears in a gray box that stretches way across the screen; that problem appears because you're leaving blank space at the start of a line, so do not indent paragraphs on Wikipedia. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:06, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, technicallty, I was trying to publish that. It's obvious, though, that I don't know how to use the publish tool properly. --Bddmagic (talk) 14:50, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're using WP:Articles for creation properly, the trouble is that you're not demonstrating that your topic meets WP:Notability. Even if you just published the article directly without requesting review, it would probably be Speedily Deleted since company/organisation articles must meet WP:Notability to exist. Please take a look at said policy, and you'll see how an article with only footnotes to the subject itself and to YouTube is not strong enough to publish yet. Hi Matthew,

How are you? How do I remove the footnotes from my article? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrishaHoffman (talkcontribs) 21:42, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When you are in Edit mode, you will see the footnotes typed in the middle of the article itself (where the little blue number will appear later) between tags saying <ref> and </ref>. Delete any block of that, and the footnote it codes will be gone. MatthewVanitas (talk) 22:22, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Matthew,

I think I have taken care of that. Plus I have added a wiki link...since i hit save does that mean the article has been resubmitted? Trish — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrishaHoffman (talkcontribs) 22:27, 16 December 2013 (UTC) Matthew,[reply]

TrishaHoffman, you're asking about the Primo article? If you see no yellow box at all (check the bottom of the page too) that means it's not in line for review. Dennytripp (talk) 14:31, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'll leave it for others to do the next review, but taking a glance I don't think you're yet getting the thrust of WP:Notability. Again, the point is not "tell us why you think this person matters", the point is "demonstrate how other people have found him important by providing citations to published works where people have found suit to discuss Ricker and his career". That's why the footnotes to his students' sites aren't helpful: unless the site specifically says "Ricker had an influence on me and here's how" than the footnote to the cite really isn't relevant. What would be relevant is if somebody else like an academic or journalist saw fit to discuss Ricker's influence on X, Y, and Z students. Also there's no reason to footnote his own thesis: nobody's doubting he has a thesis, just mention it in the article itself with enough details (publisher, date, serial# if applicable) so a reader could find it if they wanted. Linking to WorldCat doesn't do anything to strengthen that since simply being on WorldCat is not an endorsement. That said, the several news articles you have on music business look to be good support, so that's something. Are there just no articles out there in jazz academic journals or whatever that discuss Ricker's career? Did you not find the passage in an academic book I suggested to you to be citeable? MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:47, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew - I've added a link to review of a performance by one of his students, which includes a reference to Ricker as a "jazz legend": "After receiving bachelor’s and masters of music degrees from Eastman School of Music, a division of University of Rochester, he worked with jazz legends such as Fred Sturm, Bill Dobbins and Ramon Ricker."

I've also added a list of some of the artists Ricker has recorded/performed with: Stan Getz, Buddy Rich, Chuck Mangione, Steely Dan, the Moody Blues.

It's all done. You've made my Christmas. Julia.Rose.19 (talk) 17:26, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Julia.Rose.19, published as Dudley Dudley (politician). Overall in decent shape, but there are a few improvements you can make:
  • Please proofread for spelling and punctuation. Mainly, you have a lot of places where your period or comma is put after the footnote code, when for the sake of tidiness of appearance it should go before. Also in some places you put two or three spacebars rather than one (hitting "space" twice is a relic of the typewriter age).
  • Note at the top the "orphan" tag. Try to find other articles that mention Dudley, or could mention her, and either link her name (if it's there) or else add some brief mention of her (like add a sentence about her anti-refinery mission to the article about the town where it happened). Once you fix that you can remove the WP:Orphan tag.
  • No huge hurry at all, but if you want to tidy up footnotes, check out WP:REFNAME for an easier way to code. I did Refname fixes on your "How Aristotle Lost..." and the "Oral History..." footnotes. Note now how at the bottom of the page instead of being listed over and over, there's one unified footnote with "1a, 1b, 1c" used for the multiple appearances of the notes. Not mandatory, just if you want to tidy up.

Rhyging

Thanks for that. I just saw the movie recently, looked up the article and then got hooked on the topic. It's a pity I can't find a clearer photo. The one I uploaded is from a bad photocopy, and he's little more than an silhouette. Paul B (talk) 17:24, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Saccharo Wine

Mr. Vanitas,

I changed my submission for Saccharo Wine to reflect a more neutral point of view. I am not the creator of the wine, however I am an owner of a winery that makes it. Currently there is no federal accepted name for this type of wine. It is classified under "other wine".

Basi, and Kilju if offered for legal sale in the United States would also fall under the classification of "other wine". However even "other wine" according to federal law, must have a name that accurately reflects the nature of the wine. Saccharo is the latin word for "from Sugar". Like Basi, that is fermented in clay jars, and Kilju that is made from any type of sugar product, Saccharo uses only cane sugar of at least 50% then blends other natural agricultural products other than grapes to account for other sugars. Traditional wine making techniques to ferment the cane sugar base to 12%, as well as traditional racking and aging practices are also used.

Saccharo Wine is currently not for sale in the United States. It is a real wine, that is currently being classified by the federal govt.

It will be for legal sale in Nov 2014.

A cup of tea for you!

Hey, Matthew, don't take that IP rant to heart. It looked to me as though you were going out of your way to be helpful. —Anne Delong (talk) 13:15, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rejection of AFC on Year Walking

Good afternoon! I noticed you had rejected my submission of "Year Walking" in the Articles for Creation section, citing "unreliable sources". The three resources I used (although in the Swedish language) were perfectly verifiable. The Nordisk Familjebok is an old Swedish encyclopaedia - one of the most comprehensive ever produced in the language (at around 38 volumes). www.ne.se is the site of the Nationalencyklopedin, a very comprehensive contemporary encyclopaedia, with the number of articles on the site hovering around 200,000. Wärend Och Wirdarne, by Gunnar Olof Hylten Cavallius, is an old book from 1921, detailing Swedish folklore and pagan practices. Is there any reason I should be aware of that these sources are not reputable? Thanks, Calmbit (talk) 13:44, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Calmbit I believe the issue for both of us is that the "Nationalencyklopedin" appeared to be hosted by an unknown agency, this "Projekt Runeberg", and for me at least I (perhaps mistakenly) thought the Ne.se was user-submitted content like Wikipedia or IMDB. In either case, they're both reference books, which is overall not ideal because we're aiming for an exploration of the topic more than just a basic definition. It may well be that these refs are decent, but our quick initial sweeps raised some concerns that we'd like to clarify. For your next review, you may want to put a short note at the top explaining briefly what the refs are so folks feel comfortable with the reliability of the cite.
For me one of the biggest things is that there is almost no mention of your title-term "year walking" on the whole Internet other than a number of what appear to be interconnected blog posts. If the term Årsgån is commonly used to describe this practice in English, that may be a more reasonable title, and you can explain what it literally means somewhere in the first sentence.
It's an interesting topic, it's just a bit hard for reviewers to figure out the sourcing, so it'd be easier if you had one or two books that were published by serious academic outfits (University of Uppsala or something) so folks could now that peer-reviewed anthropology works explore the issue. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:26, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your concerns, and I thank you for bringing them to my attention - I'll rectify them ASAP. Year Walking is (sadly) a topic not commonly recorded within history, and finding resources on it is not an easy task. However, I shall attempt to grab more resources from official academic outfits. The topic, with it's traditional death around the beginning of the 1800's, doesn't exactly carry to contemporary history. Thanks for everything! Calmbit (talk) 18:20, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Saccharo wine

Matthew,

Thanks for reviewing the page for Saccharo wine. Im glad you put those comments down. I will be resubmitting my page after the wine reviews come in and when there is plenty of press and info on it. Thank you for taking the time to explain my problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.228.217.168 (talk) 15:09, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hi,

would you please be more specific as to why http://www.peyamigurel.com/yasamindan.php?lang=eng was declined? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Temurah (talkcontribs) 17:13, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Urban Conversion

Hi Matt, I wanted to discuss why Urban Conversion page was denied. You mentioned that this was not a notable organization. The show airs on PBS, and we wanted to ensure that our viewers can learn more about our show. It is going into it's second season. What makes a company notable enough for a Wiki page? Please let me know. Thanks.

Disambiguation link notification for December 21

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Thomas Machin, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Rochambeau and Fort Montgomery (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
