The Michigan gubernatorial election of 2014 will take place on November 4, 2014, to elect the Governor of Michigan. Incumbent Republican Governor Rick Snyder is eligible to seek a second and final term in office, but has not yet publicly declared that he will do so. Primary contests, if there are any, will take place on August 5, 2014, and the partisan filing deadline is Tuesday, April 22, 2014.[1]

Snyder is considered vulnerable if he chooses to seek re-election, as reflected in his very low approval ratings.[2] The consensus among The Cook Political Report,[3] Governing,[4] The Rothenberg Political Report,[5] Sabato's Crystal Ball[6] and Daily Kos Elections[7] is that the contest is a "tossup".

Republican primary

Though incumbent Governor Rick Snyder has not yet formally declared if he will run for re-election, recent polling has indicated significant opposition from Republican primary voters in Michigan.[8][9][10][11] This has come in the midst of now-public discussions by the Tea Party network regarding whether incumbent Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley should be replaced as Snyder's running mate.[8][12] Snyder, despite not yet formally declaring that he is seeking re-election, has started running campaign ads in September, 2013, immediately following the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference.[13]

On August 26, 2013, Tea Party leader Wes Nakagiri ended weeks of speculation and formally announced that he had filed the necessary paperwork to challenge Calley for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor.[14][15][16] At the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference (September 20–22, 2013), speculation reported by the media also included Todd Courser as a potential challenger to Calley.[17] The Michigan Republican Party state convention, at which the running mate nomination will be decided, is scheduled to take place on August 23, 2014.

Democratic primary

Michigan Democratic Party leadership has rallied support behind former U.S. Representative Mark Schauer, who was expected to run unopposed in the Democratic Party primary. Party Chairman Lon Johnson has encouraged all other potential challengers to stay out of the race so as to avoid a costly and potentially bitter primary campaign.[23] However, during Thanksgiving Weekend another opponent, Mark McFarlin, announced that he is running for the democrat nomination for Governor.
