Every Witch Way is an American teen sitcom that premiered on Nickelodeon on January 1, 2014.[1] It is the American version of the Nickelodeon Latin American show Grachi.[2]

The first season was part of Nickelodeon's "One Month Event", which means that the episodes aired from January 1 to January 30, for a total of 20 episodes. On March 13, 2014, Nickelodeon announced that they had commissioned a second season of Every Witch Way,[3] that aired on July 7, 2014.[4]

On May 14, 2014, Nickelodeon Netherlands aired the show, titled Verhekst!: this marks the worldwide series launch.[5] On July 14, Every Witch Way is set to premiere in Brazil[6]and Latin America, in UK and Ireland.[7]

Plot

14-year-old Emma Alonso moves with her father to the suburbs of Miami, Florida, where she learns that she is a witch and also the "Chosen One" because she can use her magic easier than other witches and has inherited the Hexoren Book of Spells from her mother that passed away when Emma was born. Emma embarks on a journey in high school to learn all the advantages and disadvantages of being a witch, including having to deal with rival witches Maddie Van Pelt and Miss Torres, the evil principal, and Emma's love interest, Daniel. In season two, Emma is Daniel's girlfriend. However, the witch counsel comes from the witch world to our world to warn her and tell her to break up with Daniel because witches cant date humans. But Emma doesn't want to do that. And she also has to deal with a full moon!

Cast and characters

Main characters

  • Emma Alonso (Paola Andino)[8] A new student at Iridium High, she's bubbly and positive. She's a good witch and scrap booker who wants to use her powers to help people. In season 1, she falls in love with Daniel she finds out that she's the Chosen One: her guardian is Lily, the school nurse. In season 2, she is dating Daniel, and her powers also grows stronger.
  • Daniel Miller (Nick Merico)[8] An all star at Iridium High and member of the Sharks, he's cute, smart, and popular. He has had a constant on-and-off relationship with Maddie. He's totally against cheating until Emma shows up. He has a crush on Emma. In season 2, he is dating Emma Alonso. In season two at the beginning Daniel doesn't want Emma to get her powers back!
  • Maddie Van Pelt (Paris Smith)[8] The scariest and most popular girl in school. She's the leader of the Panthers and Daniel's ex-girlfriend. She's an evil witch whose powers have been passed down from generations. She hates Emma because Daniel is her ex-boyfriend. In season 2 she has lost her powers.
  • Andi Cruz (Daniela Nieves)[8] Emma's best friend, she's a fearless and tomboyish girl member of the Sharks. She's sarcastic, but deep down she admires Emma's positive attitude.
  • Jax Novoa (Rahart Adams) The new student at Iridium High in season 2, he's a wizard and a member of the Sharks. He uses his powers for bad.
  • Diego Rueda (Tyler Alvarez)[8] Brother of Gigi. He's a Churi Kanay (meaning "Son of Fire"), which means he can control the elements, and a member of the Sharks. In season 2, it is revealed that he has a crush on Maddie.
  • Tony Myers (Kendall Ryan Sanders)[8] Mathlete, amateur magician, and member of the Sharks, he has a major crush on Emma. He doesn't appear in season two because he went to magic academy.
  • Mac Davis (Mavrick Moreno)[8] Smelliest member of the Sharks, he's super energetic and loves to live in the spotlight. He doesn't appear in season 2 because he moved to Texas.
  • Katie Rice (Denisea Wilson)[8] She acts clueless, but she's actually one of the smartest girls in school. She secretly dreams of becoming the leader of the Panthers.
  • Sophie Johnson (Autumn Wendel)[8] Silliest and dumbest member in the Panthers.

Minor characters

  • Gigi Rueda (Zoey Burger)[8] Sister of Diego. She's the queen of gossip and posts all she knows on her blog "Miss Information", the most popular blog in the school.
  • Francisco Alonso (Rene Lavan) Father of Emma and new principal of Iridium High in season 2.
  • Ursula Van Pelt (Katie Barberi) Mother of Maddie, who likes Francisco and has Maddie's powers in season 2.
  • Lily (Melissa Carcache) School's nurse and Emma's guardian witch. Despite being a witch, she is actually powerless and always relies on her magic kit. She is the new member of the witches council in season 2.
  • Principal Torres (Michele Verdi) The principal of Iridium High in season 1 and the second antagonist of the show who is also an evil witch. She has an obsession with frogs, and uses her powers to primarily turn her students and faculty members into frogs, keeping them in an aquarium tank in her office as part of her "collection". She's defeated at the end of season 1.
  • Coach Julio (Rafael de La Fuente) Son of Miss Torres and the coach of the Sharks.
  • Tommy Miller (Jason Drucker) Little brother of Daniel and member of the Terrible Three.
  • Melanie Miller (Jackie Frazey) Little sister of Daniel and member of the Terrible Three.
  • Robbie Miller (Louis Tomeo) Little brother of Daniel and member of the Terrible Three.
  • Christine Miller (Whitney Goin) Mother of Daniel.
  • Rick Miller (Jimmie Bernal) Father of Daniel.

Reception

The premiere episode had an estimated 2.1 million viewers.[10] The second episode drew 2.9 million viewers, giving a large increase in audience.[11]

After a few episodes, Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media gave the show 2 stars,[12] saying that Every Witch Way "devotes too much time and energy to Maddie's superficiality and spite to be considered a likable choice for this impressionable age group. And since none of Maddie's actions ever land her in hot water she can't work a spell to escape, kids never see her learn a lesson." She also notes it "suffers from some subpar acting and a low-budget look and feel, and the absence of even a laugh track", leaving it "unusually flat for a tween sitcom. And without the bells and whistles kids tend to like in their entertainment, there's nothing to distract them from the excessive superficiality and pettiness that plague many of the central characters". The season one finale on January 30, 2014 had 2.6 million viewers,[13] while the first season had a total average of 2.166 million viewers. It was also the most viewed by kids between 4 and 11 years old.[14]
