Lace Up is the debut studio album by American rapper MGK, released on October 9, 2012 through Bad Boy and Interscope Records.[6] The album features guest appearances from Alex Fitts, Anna Yvette, Blackbear, Bun B, Cassie, DMX, Dubo, Ester Dean, Lil Jon, M. Shadows, Planet VI, Synyster Gates, Tech N9ne, Twista, Waka Flocka Flame and Young Jeezy, along with the bands Avenged Sevenfold and The Kickdrums.[6] The album includes productions by Alex da Kid and JP Did This 1. Diddy is the executive producer of the album.

Release and promotion

MGK released several mixtapes, including one with the title Lace Up. In an interview with Global Grind, he compared Lace Up to the 50 Cent's album Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003), which achieved significant critical and commercial success.[7] In an interview with Vlad TV, MGK stated that Lace Up would be one of the greatest albums of the decade, he also confirmed the album's guest appearances.[6] On August 8, MGK revealed via his Twitter account that the album would be released on October 9, 2012.[6] On August 13, 2012, MGK released a mixtape titled EST 4 Life, which contained both old and recently recorded material.[8] In an interview with Rap-Up, MGK revealed he had recorded a song with one of his idols – fellow rapper DMX – called "D3mons", which he claimed would be a "very dark" record.[9] The track "Stereo", which features Fitts was released as a promotional single on September 20, 2012.

Singles

The album's lead single, "Wild Boy" featuring rapper Waka Flocka Flame and was produced by GB Hitz and Southside. The song was initially included on his fourth mixtape, Rage Pack (2011), and on his debut EP, Half Naked & Almost Famous (2012). It debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 on the week of January 28, 2012 at number 98 and on US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at number 49. It serves as his first song charted in both Billboard's charts.[10][11]

The album's second single, "Invincible" featuring vocals from American singer-songwriter Ester Dean and was produced by British producer Alex da Kid. The song was released to digital retailers in the United States on April 24, 2012,[12] and was solicited to rhythmic contemporary radio and contemporary hit radio on May 15 and July 31, 2012 respectively.[13] MGK shot a video for the single, which featured an appearance from the singer Ester Dean, and uploaded the video on YouTube under his VEVO account, on June 3, 2012.[14]

On August 6, 2012, the album's third single "Hold On (Shut Up)" featuring rapper Young Jeezy was released.[15] The music video was released on November 19, 2012.[16] On September 20, 2012 "Stereo" was released with an accompanying music video, as the first promotional single for the album (though it was formerly part of the "Lace Up" mixtape). The single features vocals from Alex Fitts. It would be included alongside "Invincible" and "Hold On (Shut Up)" in MGK's Music Unlimited exclusive EP titled: Lace Up - The Prelude, released on October 2, 2012.[17]

Commercial performance

The album debuted at number 4 on the US Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 57,000 copies.[18] It slid down to #22 in its second week giving it a total of 65,000 copies.[19] Sliding down to #37 in week three it sold 10,000 more copies.[20] As of March 24, 2013, the album has sold 178,000 copies.[21]
