Great job contributing articles about Swedish art to English Wikipedia!

Swedish Art Contributor Barnstar
I hereby award User:W.carter with this barnstar for their work on John Bauer (illustrator) and approach for Einar Jolin. It seems that we have synchronistic viewpoints on next steps, and if there's a tweak to the approach that's helpful for you, I'm game. Great job!--CaroleHenson (talk)

@CaroleHenson:Oh dear, this is just a bit overwhelming. Thanks! :) w.carter-Talk 03:18, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hear, hear! An EXCELLENT job is what you've done, and always in a friendly spirit! Congratulations to the GA! :) Yakikaki (talk) 18:09, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

People who make images "not suck"

Red pill and blue pill
Structural integrity and failure

Recently you talked about the yellowing of an image and that you were able to make enhancements to it.

I don't know if it helps or not (i.e., you might be extremely proficient at image editing), but after seeking a Wikipedia ad on my page for The graphics lab, I submitted a requests Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop#Please help make "Grandma Moses" images "not suck" (phrase from the ad). I looked in commons at the "before" version of some of their work - and they are incredible.

After that's done, I thought Ester Ellqvist's images would be good to have done. Her two paintings are so dark! Just food for thought...--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:15, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm
@CaroleHenson:Yes, one can do wonders with programs these days, proving one have enough time. :) The "restorations" I did with Bauer's pic was just a very quick 'once over'. I'll take a look at Esters pics as soon as I get the time. (Tomorrow is work day, I have had some days off and it fitted perfectly with the reviews.) Dark pics are very often a problem when people photograph them from books instead of scanning them. Not enough light. I'll just check so that the originals are not just as dark first. (See my discussion about that yellowed originals should be left alone.) Left is a pic I brightened up a bit for my expansion of the Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm. Not much but you can look at it in the Commons. And right is a pic I made just for fun. :) I stumbled upon the article and noticed that it lacked a pic. So I carefully selected two fine capsules of Omega 3 that I take to try and stay healthy. Put them in my windowsill, snapped pic, some tweaks and Photoshop. Et voila! :)
Sometimes I take request from other editors writhing about my little island (see my user page) and during one of these trips I just saw the most amazing collapse barn and took some pics. At home again I searched for an article it could fit into, and sure enough, Structural integrity and failure now has a Gotlandic barn as a warning example. :) I am in no way a photographer, more like chaotic picture maker. :) Best, w.carter-Talk 23:46, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Impressive! I would have thought that backdrops, special lighting, etc. would have been needed for the pills image... I like your other two images, too. Cool!--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:58, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@CaroleHenson: Done They were small and easy to deal with, might as well get it done. You have to purge your cache to see them. Pic of Ester looks does not "miniaturize" well, but look at it in full size: She was a skilled painter, allright. All for tonight, bye, w.carter-Talk 00:23, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! They look so much better! If you don't mind - it would be great if you looked at the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop#Please help make "Grandma Moses" images "not suck" images. Someone worked on them really quickly - and I couldn't see the change. I think I may have offended him or her (I hardly ever know gender around here), because I asked if maybe the old versions of the images were posted to commons. I don't see a difference. But maybe, it's like you said earlier - that there's only so much that can be done for images that come from books. I'm not asking you to do anything, who knows, they could be working on making more tweaks. It would just be nice to know if you thought it was possible to make them better.--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:33, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, my bad about the Grandma Moses images... I had to refresh my cache - or whatever that is called and now see the updates.--CaroleHenson (talk) 01:19, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@CaroleHenson:´That's ok, it's easy to forget that part sometimes. Pics are very fast and easy (and fun) tweaks for me to do. If you have any others you want fixed, just let me know. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 07:25, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Einar Jolin

The article Einar Jolin you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Einar Jolin for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. w.carter laying down, digesting all the knowledge gained during reviews.
@CaroleHenson:Awsome! What a collaboration it has been. You really worked hard getting me over the last hurdle. I have learned so much during all of this. :) I just have to digest and absorb it all for a while now. Thanks again. I'll be back! -- w.carter-Talk 19:21, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My pleasure. Great work on the article! I am glad that a moment of chaos led to one of order. A GA mentor provided great input that helped me realize a different approach for documenting the review and a lighter touch will make the process less tiresome and frustrating... and I'm grateful for coming to that resolution. Thanks much, really great job! Reading through the article for the last time was a pleasure!--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:26, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And Philg88, this time there is absolutely no doubt: It's one green dot for me and one green dot for you. Looking back, I can hardly imagine all the time and effort you put into getting the form and language right for this article, while at the same time teaching a chaotic newbie (me) how to edit. :) Cheers, w.carter-Talk 19:39, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Dear W: I'm confused again. Posted on John Dewey talk page my effort to make instrumentalism relevant, and got 2 answers--neither of which makes sense to me or mentions Dewey. Can you help me interpret? Thanks.

I couldn't make your ping work.TBR-qed (talk) 19:43, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@TBR-qed:Hello! Nice to hear from you again. First: If you post here at my talk page, you don't need to ping me. I get an automatic ping as soon as someone posts here. Second: The two things in your section at the talk page did not belong in the section you created. They were notes made by another editor at the "Criticism section" a bit further up the page. That editor did obviously not know how to make the notes stay in the right section, and "lost" notes always wander to the bottom of the page. I have corrected it all now and everything is where it should be. Please feel free to ask here again if something is troubling you. All the best, w.carter-Talk 20:04, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image placement

Hello,

If you're interested, I've reviewed the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Visual arts for an article I'm reviewing right now... and it has different guidelines regarding image placement. So, although I'm going to continue to right justify images for my articles (unless of course I use galleries), it seems I was a bit too hasty about saying left justified images are an issue for visual arts articles. If you prefer the images the way you had them, feel free to make those changes.--CaroleHenson (talk) 01:18, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@CaroleHenson:Hi! It was very thoughtful of you to provide this info. I will consider it for future articles. As it is you provided some alternate ways of thinking regarding which section the pics could be in, and both the articles look great now, no need to play around with the placing, it will only disturb the article. Thanks again, w.carter-Talk 08:18, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, my pleasure!--CaroleHenson (talk) 08:42, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Small question

Thanks for putting the welcome message on my user page. I think I am learning quickly with the help of many responses to my queries. One small question. When a comment appears on MY user talk page, do I reply there or go to the user page of the person who made the comment? Do responses on my user-page trigger automatic notifications to the sender?? Thanks, JohnD'Alembert (talk) 10:03, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@JohnD'Alembert:Hello! The policy is to leave an answer on the same page as the question, keep the conversation intact unless there is some reason for moving it elsewhere. Like complicated questions at the Teahouse can be continued on the appropriate talk page. The only time automatic notifications appear is when someone is posting on your talk page. That notification is a red square followed by a long yellow box (for most browsers and settings). In all other cases you have to alert the other editor in some way, either by "ping" or by mentioning them in a link. This will result in a just the red box notification. So even if you respond in your talk page you still have to alert the editor you are addressing. If you want to get hold of me you use {{ping|W.carter}} resulting in @W.carter: or [[User:W.carter|W.carter]] resulting in W.carter. There are some more, but these are the basics.
And when you ask something at someone's talk page, you also create a new section so your question don't get entangled in some other conversation. I have fixed that here for you. Please call again if you have any further questions. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 12:51, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Got it! Thanks, JohnD'Alembert (talk) 13:33, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Friend

Hi I'm Kid President! You seem to be a friendly person so I was wondering if you would be my friend? Thanks, Kid President 18:46, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Kid President:Hello and welcome to the encyclopedia. Most of us editing here are pretty friendly, and some of us become friends in time as we work here, but you may have mistaken this for a social internet site, which it is not. All of us are here to write and contribute to the encyclopedia. Was there something special you wanted to ask about? w.carter-Talk 18:55, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, I meant someone to help me be a good wiki person.Kid President 19:01, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Kid President:I understand. You are always welcome here if you have a question about something, but I think what you are looking for is someone to "adopt" you and show you how things work around here. Sorry, I don't do that. If you want to be adopted you should look at this page: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user. w.carter-Talk 19:13, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dude, of all the people that I think deserve a barnstar, it's you. Your always kind to everyone, no matter what. I've never seen a single edit where you showed even the slightest bit of annoyance. That cant be said about a lot of people. From day one you've been helpful. You were one of the first people to help me out. You are so kind an caring to new editors. Whenever I get frustrated I look at your edits and they make me realize how I should act. You're a cat lady. I'm surprised you don't have your own day. Thank You! :) Not creepy at all. The Wikipedia is the one place where stalking is legit. I see it more like in the Victorian era in England when people went visiting each other. Why, I even get a calling card when you visit! Very civilized, very Jane Austen. :) Otherwise, I'm your partner in crime since I always check out your page, as well as the pages and work of my other friends, when I log on. Nice people tend to write nice articles, and that's always a good way to get something pleasant to read. Bonsoir à toi, w.carter-Talk 20:15, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The church ruins

Just to let you know, I put up the List of church ruins on Gotland as a candidate for featured list. Gotland topics deserve more coverage, methinks :) Yakikaki (talk) 09:51, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Yakikaki:That is awesome! :) I'll be sure to check out the progress, if there's anything more you need for the list, just ping me. Fingers crossed! w.carter-Talk 10:13, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Icon for overgrown archeological sites.
@Yakikaki:Hello again! I don't want to put a dampener on this list, but I went in search of some external links for the list and started at the Swedish National Heritage Board Fornsök and entered several combination in the search box. The most relevant turned out to be "Kyrka/kapell. Fornlämning." in the "Fritext" and Gotland in "Län". With this I got 20 ruins and the list is for 17. I hope this link works: Sökresultat Kyrka/kapell. Fornlämning. Gotland. You could also try other search parameters. You might want to double check that all the ruins are present if you want the list to be an undisputed FA list, even if some of the ruins seems insignificant. I have not checked thoroughly yet but maybe Bunge, Västergarn, Fårö, Silte, Hellvi and some others should be included. Most of these are just as invisible as Solberga or Ryska Kyrkan, but for a complete list they might be relevant. Anyway, the Riksantikvarieämbetets list is the final word on what ruins there are, so no more lurking that we know of. :) Sorry...
If you decide to include these in the list: I don't have much time to go picture hunting right now, especially since most of these sites are so far from Visby. But most of them are not clearly visible, and in case you don't want just a blank space in the list, I fixed this little icon of an overgrown site for you. (Cropped from a pic I took close to Ala Church years ago.) :b Best, w.carter-Talk 11:25, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, don't apologize, you've done me and Wikipedia a huge favour! :) Thanks also for fixing the wiki-links, that was a good and very helpful thing to do! As for the ruins, I don't think it's too complicated to fix, and I'll try to add the relevant ones as soon as possible. Some of them, like Bunge and Silte, are not really ruins in their own right but rather remains of earlier churches found under presently existing ones. I don't know what you think, but instinctively (and that's how I've treated such occurrences in the articles about individual churches) I would say they are simply pre-stages to a presently standing church, and not really ruins as such. A few seem to simply be ones that are already on the list but have other names in Fornsök (which should be added, of course). Some of the other ruins however really are ruins, or so it seems at least, but I think we're dealing with one or two, in total, so it shouldn't be too difficult to add. One of them it seems even has a picture on commons (the one describes as Hellvi in Fornsök seems to be the same that is sometimes called Olofsholm). But at least for one (Fårö) there seems to be no picture, so maybe we could use your picture, as you suggest, or else leave it blank. It's not so satisfying of course but I've seen it elsewhere. Hm, food for thought! Speaking of pictures, I saw today on my computer at work that the pictures seem to come out as smaller than their field. Does it look weird or OK to you? I'll have to try to check what could be wrong... Anyhow, thanks again for the heads up and all your help, now and always! Ciao, Yakikaki (talk) 15:46, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Yakikaki: My pleasure. :) Nice catch with the Hellvi/Olofsholm! If the pre-churches/remains are mentioned in the church's article, then no problem, and just add the rest. I know from experience that some old die-hard semi-historians here on the island can be pretty nitpicky, so it's good to not give anyone anything to complain about. As for the pictures: That is probably because your screen at work is larger than the one you have at home. (I have the reverse with a large screen at home, where the list behaves as you say, and a smaller, normal, at work.) You have defined the size of each picture so they are fixed, while the page and the table always adjust to the size of the computer screen. I think there are some tricky way of defining the table for fixed proportions as well, but that is not recommended, it has to adjust to different users hardware. Your screen at work simply stretch the table and the pics are not "following". Try to not use the full screen mode at work and you will see the table popping back to what you are used to. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 16:12, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Or did you mean something else? w.carter-Talk 16:20, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Yakikaki:List looks great now! The altered % did the trick. :) No blanks. w.carter-Talk 16:28, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input! Yes, it's not nice to disappoint anyone. :) I'll try to add St. Olofsholm a bit later, as well. Catch you later, Yakikaki (talk) 16:40, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, but I'm sorry, I've been very rude! I wanted to tell you a big congratulations on finalising the Grill family article, such a huge work you've done! Way good :) Yakikaki (talk) 16:46, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Yakikaki:Thanks! Not rude at all, I know how you must feel right now with all your energy focused on the FAN list. :) I even made a DYK for the extra page Jean Abraham Grill (my first on my own (!) very scary) Trying to work up an idea for a hook for the Grill family so I might try one for that one too, but no luck. Suggestions are welcome. w.carter-Talk 16:52, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Yakikaki:Btw, do you want me to crop back the pic for Ryska Kyrkan a bit so that it is more like the other pics in proportions? w.carter-Talk 17:02, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, nice! Don't worry about the DYK process, it's a bit scary the first time but it's rather straightforward and you shouldn't have any problems with getting the article through it. I'll try to think of a suggestion for the family article, it would be nice to see it on the main page :) As for the picture, that would be very nice, if you can find the time and effort :) Yakikaki (talk) 17:35, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Yakikaki: Done Pic now at "normal" proportions in the Commons. Just refresh the list page a couple of times and it'll adjust itself. w.carter-Talk 17:50, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Yakikaki: I managed to fix the Grill's DYK with one hook at least. With guys as crazy as they were, there's always something that stands out. ALT:s are still welcome of course. :) w.carter-Talk 20:48, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
