Alexander Yakovlev (Russian: Александр Яковлев, born July 18, 1984), also known as Sultan Tikhaev, is a Russian mixed martial artist and rapper. Yakovlev is recognized as an aggressive welterweight competitor who competed in the M-1 Global, ProFC, Shooto Russia, and Bodog Fight promotions. Yakovlev’s martial arts background included training in Sambo and Freestyle Wrestling prior to turning his attention to professional fighting at the age of nineteen.

Background

Alexander was born on July 18, 1984, in Novgorod with the name Yakovlev Alexander Andreevich. The family was unsuccessful, with their father leaving the family when Alexander was one year old. In 1985 Alexander's mother, Kuznetsova Lyubov Valeryevna, got acquainted and soon married Tikhaev Magomed Magomedovich, who adopted Alexander and changed his surname, a name and a middle name on Tikhaev Sultan Magomedovich. His mother and stepfather agreed to keep the adoption secret and brought up Alexander as native son Magomed.

His new father imparted to Alexander the principles and traditions of fighting. In 1995, he brought Alexander into sports wrestling club "Olympian" to trainer Dmitriyev Andrey Yuryevich and Alexander engaged in freestyle wrestling until 2002. That same year Alexander entered the Ministry of Internal Affairs St. Petersburg University of Russia on full-time tuition. In 2003, Alexander got acquainted with Andrei Semenov , who brought him into the world of the mixed martial arts. At the same time, he trained in sambo, combat sambo, freestyle wrestling and hand-to-hand combat.

In 2005 his stepfather died of heart attack and then Alexander learned the truth about his family. He graduated from the University in 2007 with the rank of the lieutenant of criminal justice. Alexander worked in the Department of Internal Affairs across the Novgorod region for the next 5 years.
