Possible originator of the "walks into a bar" joke

This is hotly debated in most academic circles worldwide, but the unwashed seem to have never heard of him and even become angry.

Attributed to him, with handwriting confirmable to 99.5% (three standard deviations) confidence to be his using the authoritative Schewenger Scale, is this classic nugget:

"A rabbi, an Irishman, an Italian and an Indian walk into a bar. The bartender turns around, takes one look at them, and says, 'what is this, some kind of joke?'"

He would get blind drunk and reel them off, one brilliant variation after another. Conservative estimates are that at least 80% of his "walks into a bar" jokes are lost.
