Bombay Velvet is an upcoming Hindi neo-noir drama film directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, based on historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables. Set in Bombay of the 1960s, the film tells the story of a boxer, Johnny Balraj, and an aspiring jazz singer, Rosie, and how their hopes and dreams collide with their individual realities. It stars Ranbir Kapoor, [4] Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in lead roles with Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, Raveena Tandon and Siddharth Basu appearing in supporting roles.[5] The film is scheduled for release on May 15, 2015. [6]

Kashyap was inspired to make such a film after reading L.A. Quartet, a sequence of four crime fiction novels by James Ellroy, set in the late 1940s through the late 1950s in Los Angeles.[7] The novels inspired him to "dig into the dark trenches of the history of Bombay",[7] where he "found a treasure trove that was never-ending".[7]

Development

The film was initially to be produced by Viacom18 but Fox Star Studios decided to co-produce it with Phantom Films. It is based on Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables and set in early 1950's towards 1970's, before Mumbai became a metropolis. Prakash is also one of the scriptwriter's for the film.[10]

Ranbir Kapoor will be portraying a street fighter, whilst Anushka Sharma will appear as a jazz singer, as well as his love interest in the film.[11][12]

Director Karan Johar will make his full-fledged acting debut, where he will enact the role of the primary antagonist, Kaizad Khambatta.[13] His role is said to have been inspired from Russi Karanjia.[8] On Karan's acting, Vikas Bahl of Phantom Films has said “I think there is a beautiful actor hidden in Karan. I simply love his ads. I'm sure he'll make the character bigger than the actor.”

On his decision to do the film Ranbir Kapoor stated that, "There is no process in selecting the kind of work I do. I'm fortunate to be working with some of the best filmmakers. The script of "Bombay Velvet" just fell into my lap. I read it and I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of Anurag's grand vision, his innovative storytelling, his movie-making process; everything that he does so perfectly."[14]

Filming

The first schedule of Bombay Velvet started in the third week of July 2013 and continued till 1st week of September 2013.[15] The first schedule was shot at Sri Lanka's Ranmihitenna Mahinda Rajapaksa National Tele Cinema Park, Hambantota getting the distinction of being the first foreign film to be filmed there. Shootings was also carried out in Colombo, Galle and Pasikudah.[16] Deepa Mehta had opted to film Water and Midnight's Children in Sri Lanka and Kashyap too found the country historically more suited for his film.[17] The second schedule was also in Mahinda Rajapaksa National Tele Cinema Park, Sri Lanka, where Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor rejoined the filming in February. The second schedule completed in March. Parts of the set was left at the National Tele Cinema Park, rather than being dismantled, as it will be used as a tourist attraction site. The third and final schedule was in Mumbai where shooting was held for a 10 day period. Although intended to release late 2014, the film has been pushed to May 15, 2015 due to pending VFX.[1][18]

Release

The film will be released in two versions, one for Indian audience and the other for an international release.[19] The editing for the international version is by Oscar-winner Thelma Schoonmaker, who has been a frequent collaborator of director Martin Scorsese, and edited films like Goodfellas, Raging Bull and The Departed.[19] While the Indian version simultaneously, is being edited by Prerna Saigal, who was an associate director and editor for the Indian film, The Lunchbox.[19]

Marketing

A teaser of the film's first-look was released on 28 January 2015, it featured Ranbir Kapoor's avatar in the film "Johnny Balraj", the "big shot". On 29 January 2015 the official first poster was revealed, featuring Johnny Balraj wearing a pinstriped suit and wielding a Thompson submachine gun in each arm.[20]

Soundtrack

Music director Amit Trivedi began working on the soundtrack after the release of Dev D[21] and has said that the music of Bombay Velvet will reflect the age of 1960s Jazz era of Bollywood. The lyrics are being written by Amit's frequent collaborator Amitabh Bhattacharya. Singer Neeti Mohan will lend her voice to Anushka Sharma's character, and Mohit Chauhan will provide the male voice for songs in this film.
