World of Warships is an upcoming naval action-themed massively multiplayer online game produced by Wargaming. The game features aspects similar to World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, having several types of military ships fulfilling different roles.

Gameplay

Battles will take place on specific maps, which are set places with different weather conditions. Wargaming.net has stated that maps will take place within Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic locations. Each map will have its own atmosphere and flow of battle. To win each battle the player will need to employ different strategies.

The types of ship available will be destroyers, cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers.[1] These ships can be either real historical ships or blueprint prototypes from a variety of forces such as the Imperial Japanese Navy, Kriegsmarine, United States Navy, Royal Navy, and the Soviet Navy. Submarines and torpedo boats will not be present in World of Warships. While only American and Japanese fleets were present within the closed alpha version of the game, there are plans to add the German, French, Italian, British, and Soviet Union navies later on. A preview of some American destroyers,[2] American aircraft carriers,[3] and Japanese destroyers[4] has been published on the World of Warships portal.[5]

Battle groups are the equivalent of flights in World of Warplanes and platoons in World of Tanks, allowing a group of players to join and fight battles together. Clan wars in World of Warships will be played out in the ocean. Clan wars is where different clans play a "special game" in order to get land or maintain control of a region. Like World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, different sectors of the ocean can be occupied by different clans and ports that enables for ships to get out on the front.

Credits are the main in-game currency in World of Warships. It enables the player to buy ships, shells, and mount equipment on their ships. Similar to World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, special premium ships will be available for purchase with gold. Players can also use gold currency to purchase a 'Premium Account' which gives them a 50% increase for experience and credits earned in all matches, as well as other benefits. Currently in the beta testing stage, another kind of currency is available which is known as piasters. Piasters are not for sale, so they must be awarded in order to have any. The are currently acting as a stand in for another type of currency known as gold. As in World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, gold, when it is released, will be obtained by purchasing it with actual money, or winning it by participating in contests and events.

Development

On August 16, 2011, the company website of Wargaming.net, developer and publisher of World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, announced World of Battleships, a free-to-play naval action MMO. It is intended to complete the World of war trilogy developed by the company.[6] On August 2, 2012, the game was renamed to World of Warships.[7] On November 14, 2013, the game entered closed alpha testing.[8]

During Tokyo Gameshow 2014, Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi announced a collaboration between World of Warships and the Arpeggio of Blue Steel anime.[9]

Closed beta testing for World of Warships started on March 12, 2015, shortly after closed alpha ended. [10] When closed beta testing started Wargaming dropped the NDA which was previously covering the game. Closed beta will be likely followed by an open beta, and then eventually release which is still unannounced at this time.

The ongoing development of the game can be watched from the official Wargaming World of warships YouTube Channel[11]. The development diaries are a good place to look for developer answers to the game itself which can be found by clicking the following link https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVmXzlhZvJVRF1k1CD98EmOXQYaVhLVUN. There is also interesting videos on warship expeditions on the channel along with Naval Legends videos.
