Hope Elizabeth Hanley Soberano (born January 4, 1998), better known as Liza Soberano, (pronounced: [laɪˈzuh]), is a Filipino-American actress and model. She was raised in Visalia, California. Soberano moved to the Philippines, at the age of 10. She has since starred in a range of drama series and films, including Wansapanataym (2011), Kung Ako'y Iiwan Mo (2012), Maalaala Mo Kaya (2012), Got To Believe (2013), and Luv U (2014). She is known for playing the protagonist Maria Agnes Calay in the hit romantic comedy Television series Forevermore.[3][4] She was launched as one of the 12 new discoveries of ABS-CBN's Star Magic Circle 2013.

Soberano was first seen as Angel in the 2013 romantic comedy film Must Be... Love, starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. She then starred in the romantic comedy television series Got to Believe as Padilla's other love interest. Since then, Soberano is recognized as "The Leading Lady to Watch For",[5][6] She will star in an upcoming film entitled "Just The Way You Are" based on the Wattpad book, The Bet alongside her on-screen love partner Enrique Gil. With Forevermore 's success,[7] Soberano is dubbed as 'the newest Primetime Princess ', and in In 2014, she won the Most Promising Female Star of the Year Award by the 46th Guillermo Mendoza Box-Office Entertainment Awards. In 2015, Soberano and Gil's pairing was considered the Breakthrough Love Team on Philippine primetime television.[8]

Personal life

Liza Soberano was born at 10:36 PM on January 4, 1998 in Santa Clara, California to Filipino father, John Castillo Soberano, and American mother, Jacqulyn Elizabeth Hanley. Soberano has a younger brother named Justin. She was raised in Visalia, California by her maternal grandparents when her parents separated. In 2008 at the age of ten, she moved to Manila, Philippines to live with her father and relatives. At age thirteen, a talent scout spotted her and she was introduced to talent manager Ogie Diaz.[9]

Career

Early stage

At age ten, Soberano came to live with her father in Manila where she was offered jobs to model for print and Television ads. Since she could only speak limited Filipino at the time, her talent manager, Ogie Diaz, encouraged her to become fluent in the language so that she can land good TV and movie projects.[10]

In March 2013, Soberano was launched as one of the 12 new discoveries of Star Magic alongside Julia Barretto, Janella Salvador, Jerome Ponce, Jane Oineza, Jon Lucas, Khalil Ramos, Julian Estrada, Michelle Vito, Ingrid dela Paz, Alex Diaz and fellow Forevermore cast member Kit Thompson.[11] During this period, Soberano had already appeared as the younger sister of Jake Cuenca in the now defunct afternoon series Kung Ako'y Iiwan Mo. She also starred as Gillian, Enrique Gil's best friend who can only love him from a distance as he pours his affection onto someone else in She's the One with Bea Alonzo and Dingdong Dantes, which was her first minor movie appearance.[11]

Soberano then played the role of Angel in Must Be... Love, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo's premier movie. A year later in 2014, she joined the primetime television series Got to Believe as Padilla's other love interest.[11]

From GMA Network to ABS-CBN

Before she was launched by Star Magic on 2013, Soberano was accepted by GMA as one of their talents which only lasted for few weeks because she was later on offered to be part of ABS-CBN's team of talents which she graciously accepted. Soberano is more comfortable with ABS-CBN than GMA which is the main reason for her decision to transfer.

Breakthrough

Called as "The Leading Lady to Watch For", Soberano received her first leading role in the hit romantic comedy TV series Forevermore as the poor yet beautiful, humble and hardworking strawberry farmer Maria Agnes Calay alongside her on-screen love partner Enrique Gil, who played Alexander 'Xander' Grande III: a rebellious, broken hotel company heir and Agnes' main love interest. With Forevermore's success,[7] Soberano is now dubbed 'the newest Primetime Princess ' and has earned the admiration of people within the local industry.[12][13] In 2015, Soberano and Gil's pairing was considered the Breakthrough Love Team on Philippine primetime television. Soberano will star in an upcoming film based on the Wattpad book The Bet, which has been renamed Just The Way You Are opposite Gil, due for release on 17 June 2015.[14]
