Wicked City is an upcoming American true crime procedural drama anthology television series, written by Steven Baigelman, and executive produced by Baigelman, Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman, Laurie Zaks, and Amy B. Harris. The series will premiere on the ABC network on October 27, 2015 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, as part of the 2015–16 television season.[1][2]

The first season focuses on two LAPD detectives as they search for a pair of romantically-linked serial killers (reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde) terrorizing the Sunset Strip. It stars Ed Westwick, Taissa Farmiga, Erika Christensen, Gabriel Luna, Karolina Wydra, and Anne Winters in main roles.[3]

Plot

Wicked City follows a unique case set in a noteworthy era of L.A. history, starting with a murder case from 1982 centered on the rock 'n' roll, cocaine-infused revelry of the Sunset Strip. Alliances are formed between detectives, reporters, drug dealers and club-goers to solve a serial murder case.

Development

It was first reported in September 2014 that the American Broadcasting Company network was developing a true crime anthology series, written by Steven Baigelman, produced by Robert D. Simon, and executive produced by Baigelman with Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman and Laurie Zaks of Mandeville Films.[5] The project was described as "a character-driven, true crime procedural that explores sex, politics and popular culture across various noteworthy eras in L.A. history."[6] On January 23, 2015, it was announced that ABC had given the project a pilot order.[7] The hour-long pilot was directed by Tom Shankland.[8] On May 7, 2015, the pilot was officially ordered to series by ABC.[9] On June 11, 2015, Amy B. Harris was announced as showrunner and executive producer for the series.[10]

Casting

On February 24, 2015, Erika Christensen was the first to be cast in the role of Betty Smith, described as a nurse and mother who meets a strange man and becomes one half of a killing team that terrorizes the Sunset Strip.[11] Taissa Farmiga and Darrell Britt-Gibson were cast the following day as Karen McClaren, a Berkeley graduate and aspiring journalist who hopes to work for Rolling Stone,[12] and Diver Hawkes, an owner of a paparazzi company specializing in crime, who gives Karen a job.[13] On March 3, 2015, Karolina Wydra joined the cast as Dianne Gibbons, a beautiful and resilient detective who is working undercover as a barmaid on the strip.[14] On March 4, 2015, it was announced that Adam Rothenberg had been cast in the leading role of Detective Jack Roth, a police officer leading the search for the killing duo, and Holley Fain had been cast as Detective Roth's loving and protective wife Trish.[15] On March 11, 2015, Anne Winters joined the cast as Vicki Roth, the teenaged daughter of Jack and Trish Roth.[16] That same day, it was announced that Gabriel Luna had been cast in the role of Detective Paco Contreras, Jack's newly transferred partner who struggles to fit in with the unit, since he was responsible for the demise of Jack's old partner.[17] On March 12, 2015, Ed Westwick was cast as Kent Galloway, the Sunset Strip Killer.[18] On May 18, 2015, it was announced that the roles of Jack Roth, Diver Hawkes, and Trish Roth were being recast.[19] Rothenberg departed the project due to the renewal of his television series Ripper Street.[20]

Filming

Principal photography for the pilot episode began on March 16, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.[21][22] Filming took place at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner building located in Downtown Los Angeles,[23] on Ventura Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley, and at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip.[24] Production on the pilot was completed on April 2, 2015.[25]
