Zaero (branded as Zaero for Quake II) is an unofficial total conversion mod developed for id Software's Quake II by Team Evolve.

Plot

The game is set in-between Quake II and Quake 4. After the defeat of Makron, the Strogg stopped their military program and started defensive procedures, isolating themselves in their cities. The humanity established several bases on the planet in order to extract as much as possible of its rich resources, most notably Steedium, a notable mineral. The player assumes the role of a pilot of an elite airforce unit Zaero, stationed on Stroggos within human-controlled territory. Suddenly, the Stroggs attack, catching the humans off-guard and forcing an immidiate evacuation. However, an energy field is set up by the enemy, and the player is tasked by the command to shut it down, so the evacuation could be started.

Gameplay

The gameplay is basically the same as in the original. The new features include 14 new levels, several new weapons (sonic cannon, sniper rifle, flare gun, EMP nuke) and items (recon visor, which allows player to use security cameras, and plasma shield generator). Among other additions are movable crates, stationary auto-cannons, 3 new enemy types and a new final boss.
