There is a comprehensive introduction of sound editing at Wikipedia:Wikivoices/Episode_48. This explains how to use the free software program Audacity to clean up sound files, concentrating on historic ones, including removing clicks, and how to use the noise reduction tool. There may be a followup later covering further aspects, as the sound file being edited in this demonstration was rather degraded, which made it only possible to make minor improvements at the hiss removal phase, which made it difficult to demonstrate certain aspects during Part II. However, all techniques and controls necessary for basic sound editing are fully explained.
