Fair use rationale for Image:ABBA Gold Greatest Hits.jpg

Image:ABBA Gold Greatest Hits.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Track Listing

Arguably somewhat UK-centric by including Lay All Your Love On Me which was Top 10 only in the UK and Ireland and excluding I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do which was a Top 10 in a number of countries though not the UK. Summer Night City a bigger hit globally than Voulez Vous was excluded. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Coachtripfan (talkcontribs) 13:06, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Name change

In accordance with policy MOS:CL (and to clear this page from the backlog of articles needed copy edit), would someone please move this page (and its talk page) to Abba Gold:Greatest Hits (album) or a similar title. I'm still quite new and don't know how. Escape Artist Swyer | Talk to me | Articles touched by my noodly appendage 16:50, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The " (album)" part of that name is unneeded as there will probably be only one topic for the title Abba Gold:Greatest Hits. Recent rulings (I'm not sure if this has been incorporated in any guidelines) discourage "preemptive disambiguation" altogether. Precedents: EP7, Manowar. / edgarde 19:06, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A dispute here means that the ABBA-related pages probably won't move. Escape Artist Swyer | Talk to me | Articles touched by my noodly appendage 09:37, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Swiss album sales

Somebody keeps changing the Swiss sales to 500,000+ because the album is certified 10x Platinum there. The amount for Platinum awards in Switzerland have changed in recent years as seen here on the Official Swiss Charts website. Up until 2000, Platinum was given for sales of 50,000 copies. From 2001-05, it was decreased to 40,000 copies, and since 2006 it has been for 30,000 copies. ABBA Gold was certified 9x Platinum by the end of 2000, which amounts to 450,000 copies. It received its tenth Platinum disc in 2008 - which is an additional 30,000 copies. Therefore the overall certified sales total so far for Switzerland is 480,000 copies. Please do not change this sales figure until the album receives another Platinum disc. 80.41.68.126 (talk) 17:54, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to comment so late. As far as I know, almost all IFPI certificates are done by date of release, not by date of certification (France I believe is the only exception). Therefore, 10x for a record released in 1992, is 500,000. --Muhandes (talk) 12:49, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's right certification is based on date of release certification (Coachtripfan (talk) 19:37, 15 December 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Album title

Is the title of this album definitely ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits? I can find several reliable sources (e.g. The Official Charts Company, The Daily Telegraph, ABC Online, Gulf Daily News, Reuters, Contactmusic) that all state that the album is really simply titled Gold: Greatest Hits. I've got a copy of the album, and I always took the word "ABBA" on its cover art and spine to refer to the band's name, rather than actually being part of the album title. I propose moving this article to Gold: Greatest Hits (ABBA album). A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 15:37, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In their official site, it's under the name "ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits" link.--WABBAW (talk) 01:42, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... I still feel that Gold: Greatest Hits is the most common name for this album, as evidenced by the number of sources that refer to it as such (see above). It may well be titled ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits on the band's official website, but Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name. I think that Gold: Greatest Hits is the name by which most people would search for an encyclopaedic article on this subject, so I would still like to make the move, but I welcome any further discussion on the matter. Thanks, A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 16:56, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You've just proven you have no common sense. Now, you better get consensus, or you will be blocked! --Discographer (talk) 20:42, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was asked to look at this matter, by Discographer. On reviewing the links, which are the Reliable Sources from which WP derives its content, all references other than the band website use only the "Gold: Greatest Hits" title with ABBA as artist. It seems that the correct title would be Gold: Greatest Hits (ABBA album), with ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits as a very plausible redirect.
I would also caution against anyone threatening anyone else with blocking over what is very apparently a content dispute - blocks are for disruption and vandalism, and good faith edits (even if wrong) do not qualify. LessHeard vanU (talk) 21:05, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then, go ahead and move it. Best, --Discographer (talk) 21:07, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds like your personal opinions. Yes, there are "reliable sources" for it being simply Gold: Greatest Hits, though the group should have official say over the title of their album. So I personally think the title of the album is ABBA Gold, but I am not going to start an edit-war over this. There are many flaws and inconsistencys throughout Wikipedia already, so this debate is not that important to me. Just stating my opinion. --BLAguyMONKEY! (talk) 11:14, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UK Chart

The UK Top 100 Weeks on Chart section is nonsense. 'Gold' is not the only Album to reach 500 Top 100 Weeks in the UK. 5 Albums have achieved it:,

To W/E 10th March 2012

1) Gold - ABBA - 647 Top 100 Weeks 2) Greatest Hits (One) - Queen - 635 Top 100 Weeks 3) Legend - Bob Marley & The Wailers - 583 Top 100 Weeks 4) Rumours - Fleetwood Mac - 513 Top 100 Weeks 5) Bat Out Of Hell - Meat Loaf - 506 Top 100 Weeks

Also - as you can see, the ABBA Album is on far more than 500 Top 100 Weeks. You get your Data from the Chart Stats Site, & they actually miss out 144 Top 100 Weeks, for 'Gold' - over 2.5 Years. Just as they miss out 139 Weeks for the Queen Album - again over 2.5 Years.

But, as long as Wikipedia can Link to Chart Stats, it matters not, how inaccurate Chart Stats is. (It has 'Gold' on 503 Top 100 Weeks, at this time - W/E 10th March 2012)

How sad - that the Wikipedia Article on 'Gold', is so laughably wrong, when it comes to its UK Top 100 Weeks.....Still - if that is how Wikipedia 'rolls', then so be it 11:30, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

UK Chart

Here is a Link to some accurate UK Chart Statistics about 'ABBA Gold'.

http://www.icethesite.com/2012/05/abba-gold-sells-5-million-copies-in-the-uk-3rd-best-selling-album-of-all-time/ 86.13.2.211 (talk) 10:53, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gold has spent more weeks in Top 75 than any other album - BUT that is an Artist only chart. Prior to 1989, the 'official' chart included multi-artist compilations. Gold's rivals such as Rumours, Bat out of Hell, and Queen's Greatest Hits in they heyday were in charts with multi-artist compilations. Gold released in 1992 has only had artist-only albums to compete with in the Top 75!

There was a Top 100 chart that was 'official' between 1981-89 - this isn't an advantage to the likes of Queen's Greatest Hits over ABBA Gold - as the Top 100 then included multi-artist compilations, which numbered anything from 20 to 40! Although the OCC compiles a Top 100 and indeed Top 200 only the Top 75 is 'official'.

In short:

1) Only the 'official' charts should be counted as they are publically available.

2) Comparing pre 1989 Top 75 (or Top 100) with post 1989 Top 75 charts is NOT comparing like with like as the former included multi-artist albums while the latter didn't.

3) ABBA Gold would simply not have as many weeks in the Top 75 if ALL albums (artist and multi-artist) were included. Conversley albums by Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Fleetwood Mac (Rumours), Meatloaf (Bat out of Hell) and Queen (Greatest Hits) would have more weeks in the charts if multi-artists were excluded! (Coachtripfan (talk) 12:54, 24 April 2013 (UTC))[reply]

Certifications - sales figures

I see the main page now has list of certicated sales - and not just award of gold/platinum/mult-platinum.

See this site for full certifications http://abbasales.hpage.com NB - The UK's sales of GOLD are NOT certifications but sales from the Official Charts Company. Gold's UK sales

The 14xplatinum sales for UK are based on official sales since February 1994 when the Official Charts Company became the chart compiler. They exclude sales from 1992-93. (Coachtripfan (talk) 14:27, 17 September 2013 (UTC))[reply]

GOLD REACHES 1000 TOP 200 WEEKS IN THE UK

In the latest UK Album Chart, (W/E 11th January), 'Gold' became one of only a tiny handful of Albums that have had 1,000 Weeks in the
Top 200. It is at No.49 in the present Chart - its 461st Top 75 Week, & its 676th Top 100 Week. The Article misses out a big 'chunk' of
its Top 100 Weeks, by giving it only 507! This is because the source it took the 507 Weeks from was missing well over 2 Years of 'Gold's
Positions. Just as it missed out well over 2 Years of 'Greatest Hits' by Queen's Chart Positions. (The Queen Album is also on over 600
Top 100 Weeks - 671 to be precise. I checked & re-checked them. They are correct). 82.6.134.233 (talk) 21:22, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ABBA Gold -- More than 932 Top 200 Weeks In UK

To W/E 1st February 2014 'ABBA Gold' had spent 1003 Weeks in the UK Top 200 - not 932 Weeks. Yes The Official UK Charts Company
gives it 932 Weeks - so where do the other 71 Weeks come from? The OCC started compiling the UK Charts on W/E 12th February 1994

. They only count 'Gold's Top 200 Weeks from that date onwards. But 'Gold' first Charted, (in at No.1), on W/E 3rd October 1992. By W/E 5th February 1994 it had managed 71 Chart Weeks. Those 71 Weeks are not counted by The OCC. So this coming Sunday, (W/E 8th February Chart), 'Gold will reach 1004 Top 200 Weeks. It is not the first Album to reach 1000 Top 200 Weeks. There are 2 others. 'Greatest Hits' by Queen, (1981), will reach 1159 Top 200 Weeks in the W/E 8th February Chart. And 'Legend' by Bob Marley & The Wailers, (1984), will reach 1070 Weeks in that Chart. (They are also the only 3 Albums to reach over 600 Top 100 Weeks in the UK. With both the ABBA & Queen Albums on over 670 Top 200 Weeks. The Article has no credibility by going on about 'Gold' being on over 500 Top 100 Weeks, when it is one of 3 Albums on over 600 Weeks). 82.6.134.233 (talk) 08:09, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ABBA Gold Has Now Officially Sold 30 Million Globally

The 28 Million Total is out of date. I've seen recent estimates for its Global Sales as high as 32 Million.
However, if we are more conservative than that - even the Official ABBA Site now gives it 30 Million Sales. 82.6.134.233 (talk) 15:59, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

that it had become the UK's 2nd Best Selling Album on W/E 13th May 2013 - 13 Months ago. Now only 'Greatest Hits' by Queen has outsold it in the UK. 82.6.134.233 (talk) 15:51, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Eleventh biggest album in Australia

This is not correct. It is the 11th biggest album since 1988 (as per link). That list misses all the great selling albums prior - Including one of ABBA's biggest there - The Best Of ABBA — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.60.129.67 (talk) 22:07, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The 3rd= BEST SELLING ALBUM IN AUSTRALIA

The Article Links to a Site that uses a Points System, to work out the 'All Time' Albums in Australia. The Article says that it is the 11th 'All Time' Australian Album on that Site. In fact it is now the 13th. However, its Australian Sales, (Certified), are over 1,190,000, which makes it the 3rd= 'All Time Best Selling Album' there. It is 3rd= with Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits. So 3rd= is a lot better than the 13th place that it gets via a Points System. 82.6.134.233 (talk) 13:54, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
