"Call on Me" is an R&B song recorded by Janet Jackson and Nelly. The song was released as the first single from Jackson's ninth studio album, 20 Y.O.; its North American radio impact date was June 19 2006. The single peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, her highest charting single on that chart since "Someone to Call My Lover" (2001).

"Call on Me" is a mid-tempo song which samples The SOS Band's "Tell Me If You Still Care". [1] "It's really just a record about when you need a friend, somebody you need to talk to, just call on a person. It's a friend record. It really is not a boyfriend/girlfriend record. The way Nelly and Janet are talking is more girlfriend/boyfriend, but it really goes out to friends", said producer Jermaine Dupri.[2]

The music video for "Call on Me" was directed by Hype Williams and took four days to complete (from June 28 2006–July 1 2006). It was filmed inside a hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in Los Angeles, California. The music video incorporates African, Asian, and Indian styles, with a mixture of outfits and hairstyles. The video is composed of live action and animation and was inspired by the Aesop's Fables children's tales. Jermaine Dupri announced that the music video would be "the most "expensive video of the last three years." "We pushed it as far as we could go. We tried to get a goddess feel," make-up artist Fran Cooper said. The video premiered on BET on July 26, 2006.[3] The music video premiered in Canada on MuchMusic and CTV on July 27 2006.[4] The video premiered in the United Kingdom on Channel 4 on August 7 2006.

On July 28 2006, a petition was started by Jackson's fans stating that MTV has refused to play the "Call on Me" music video due to the Super Bowl XXXVIII incident. The petition states that Justin Timberlake, the other participant in the Super Bowl incident, receives heavy promotion of his "SexyBack" music video & that this is unfair and discriminatory among Jackson's fans. Jackson's video receives heavy rotation on BET, VH1 and VH1 Soul. MTV Networks currently airs the video on MTV Hits and MTV Jams. The music video for "Call on Me" has reached a peak of number one on 106 & Park, BET's daily top ten countdown, Jackson's first number one on that show. [citation needed]

Chart performance

The song premiered on Z100 on June 17 2006. In the United States, the song was played 184 times two days prior to its official release, on four different formats of radio, generating an audience impression of 4.358 million. By its official radio release date, it achieved 8.679 million audience impressions.

"Call on Me" debuted at number eight on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, a position roughly equivalent to number 108 on the Hot 100. The song also debuted at number forty-eight on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart after two days of official release, which was the highest debut of the week. The following week, the song debuted on the Billboard Radio Monitor R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at number 19, the highest debut since TLC's "No Scrubs", which debuted at number 13 in February 1999. "Call on Me" has now become Jackson's first top ten at R&B radio since 2001's "All for You". [citation needed]

"Call on Me" was released on the iTunes Music Store on July 18 2006, which helped the song rise from number 63 to number 25, the song's current Hot 100 peak position. The following week, the song lost digital download points and fell to number 33 in its sixth week on the Hot 100. The song is currently at number 44.
