Production
Nagraj Manjule wrote Sairat as a "classic love story" and aimed for it to be more commercial than his previous films. It was based on his own experiences and so he chose his own village Jeur, Karmala Taluka in Solapur, as the setting. Filming commenced in February 2015 and concluded in May.[9]
Release
The film was released with english subtitles in Maharashtra,Gujarat,Goa,Madhya Pradesh,Karnataka,NCR,Kolkata,Bhilai,Raipur,Bhiwadi and Hyderabad.[10] The film was scheduled to screen at 400 theatres and the total number of shows amounted to 8500 shows. Incredibly, in the second week, additional 60 theatres have been deputed to screen the film and the total number of shows stands at 14,000 now.[11] Such has been the Sairat craze that two additional shows one at midnight and one at 3 a.m. have been introduced in a hall in Rahimatpur in Satara district.[12] The film was released in about 200 screens in other parts of India (Outside Maharashtra) with english subtitles.[13]
Critical reception
In addition to challenging the caste system in India, Sairat casts Archie (the main female character) in a leading role in the action scenes.[14] The director was questioned about his decision to cast Rinku Rajguru as the main character, despite her not being "conventionally 'good looking'"; he disputed this and described most film actresses as "bimbettes" compared to the strong character played by Rinku.[15] Ganesh Matkari of Pune Mirror rated the film with four star saying, "The word I will use to describe Sairat is 'significant'."[16]

Sairat grossed ₹3.60 crore (US$430,000) on its opening day, ₹3.95 crore (US$470,000) on the second day and ₹4.55 crore (US$550,000) on sunday, taking its 1st weekend collections to ₹12.10 crore (US$1.4 million), film added ₹2.90 crore (US$350,000) on monday taking its four day total to ₹15 crore (US$1.8 million).[17][18][19] Movie collected ₹25.50 crore (US$3.1 million) in 1st week.[20] Sairat added ₹3.84 crore (US$460,000) on 2nd friday, ₹4.12 crore (US$490,000) on saturday and ₹4.61 crore (US$550,000) on sunday, taking its 2nd weekend collections to ₹12.57 crore (US$1.5 million), film added ₹3.04 crore (US$360,000) on 2nd monday taking its 11 day total to ₹41.11 crore (US$4.9 million).[21] [22] Movie collected ₹29.5 crore (US$3.5 million) in Week 2, more than Week 1 collections (₹25.5 crore (US$3.1 million)) its total collection till May is around ₹60 crore (US$7.2 million).
