Brain Bar Budapest is an annual global festival dedicated to the complex and evolving relationship between technology and humanity organized in Budapest, Hungary since 2015. To date, it is the only festival on the future in Europe.
Brain Bar Budapest is comprised of the following format types: 10-15-minute talks on the festival’s main themes; moderated debate sessions with 2+ speakers; battles where speakers’ different point of view face off and artistic performances including DJ sets and mini shows.
History
2015
The inaugural event was held at Budapest’s Akvarium Klub, from June 4 to 6 with the goal to make our communities future-proof and to create new, dynamic platforms to exchange visions in Europe.[1]
The first festival attracted more than 3000 visitors from 20 countries and a further 3500 followed it online.[2]
Main themes followed the trends and dilemmas that define the future of our cities, businesses, education, health and innovation.[3]
Brain Bar Budapest 2015 featured 81 guest speakers from 20 different countries[4] - including Harvard and Oxford economist historian Niall Ferguson, the world’s leading urbanist, international best-selling author Richard Florida, world-renowned educational researcher Sugata Mitra and Philip Zimbardo, psychologist and professor emeritus at Stanford University.
Musical performances included Irie Maffia’s producer and keyboardist Jumo Daddy, Žagar member DJ Bootsie and future beats producer Yvein Monq among others.
13 side events all over the city centre complemented the program.
2016
In 2016, the second Brain Bar Budapest took place on 2-4 June at Akvarium Klub. Festival tickets were sold out by the end of May and over 5000 people visited the 25 venues.[5] 43 countries’ residents attended the core program and the 20+ side events.
During the festival, four primary themes were presented on stage: artificial intelligence and its potential impact on humans, the impact of technology on the future of business and education, the future of cities and the future of Europe.[6]
200 guest speakers from more than 25 countries included Chris Hadfield, former commander of the International Space Station, Sir Martin Sorrell, founder and CEO of WPP, Zoltan Istvan, 2016 US Presidential candidate of Transhumanist Party, Cheryl Yeoh, CEO of Global Innovation & Creativity Centre and Virginia Postrel, author of "The future and its enemies" and "The Power of Glamour".[6]
Musical performances included Félix Lajkó, iamyank and Anima Sound System DJ Set.[7]
In 2016, Brain Bar Budapest formed a strategic partnership with Google and onboarded WIRED as its media partner.[8] Other partners included General Electric, BMW, Heineken and KPMG.[9]
