Brain Bar Budapest is an annual global festival on the future organized in Budapest, Hungary since 2015. A wide range of topics is addressed in order to discuss and predict social and technological trends. The festival had over 200 speakers from more than 25 countries, including Chris Hadfield, Niall Ferguson, Sugata Mitra and Philip Zimbardo.[1] In addition to various format types of speeches, the festival hosts artistic performances including DJ sets and mini shows.
Brain Bar Budapest is the largest future-themed festival in Europe, and is now attended by more than 5000 people, including 150 volunteers and over 200 media people. The festival is becoming more and more international with visitors from 43 countries (with an especially large participation of British, Austrians and Polish).
The festival receives extensive media coverage with over 180 articles featured in print and online press, including Brain Bar Budapest's official media partner WIRED.
History
The first Brain Bar Budapest was held from June 4 to 6, 2015, with the goal to create new, dynamic platforms to exchange visions in Europe.[2] The festival's inaugural year featured 80 guest speakers from 20 different countries, including Richard Florida, Niall Ferguson, Daniel Epstein, Philip Zimbardo and Sugata Mitra. The first festival attracted more than 3000 visitors.[3]
Due to steadily increasing popularity of the festival, in 2016, the number of visitors had grown to up to 5000 people. The participation rate of foreign attendees increased from 5 percent to 30 percent - the live stream of the festival was followed from 43 countries. Chris Hadfield, Sir Martin Sorrell, Virginia Postrel, Neil Harbisson and Cheryl Yeoh appeared on the stages of the festival.
Brain Bar Budapest is comprised of various format types: 10-15-minute talks on the festival’s main themes; moderated debate sessions with 2+ speakers; battles where speakers’ different point of view face off and artistic performances including DJ sets and mini shows.
In 2016, Brain Bar Budapest formed a strategic partnership with Google and onboarded WIRED as its media partner.[4] Other partners include General Electric, BMW, Heineken and KPMG.[5]
