Plata O Plomo is the collaborative studio album by American hip hop recording artists Fat Joe and Remy Ma, released February 17, 2017 by RNG (Rap's New Generation) and EMPIRE.[1][3][4]

Background

At the time Remy Ma was given an 8 year prison sentence for shooting an associate, her and Fat Joe were not speaking due to her debut album There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story not selling as well as expected for which she blamed Joe.

In a 2016 interview on the Drink Champs Podcast with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, Fat Joe said that before Remy was released from prison they resolved their issues they had with each other over the phone, and that when she was released her and Joe would often go to dinner or lunch. Some months after Remy had been released she approached Joe, who had been giving her time to settle in to life on the outside, to make some music together.

Later, Fat Joe was booked to perform at BX Fight Club in the Bronx, New York for long-time friend BX Hov where he brought out Remy Ma as a surprise and felt the vibe from the crowd to where he realised people like Fat Joe, people like Remy Ma but they love Fat Joe and Remy Ma. After the performance, Joe was walking to his car when Remy mentioned how the crowd react so differently when they perform together so Joe asked her if she wanted to start working on new music together and she agreed.[5]

In the same interview, Fat Joe revealed that the album was to be titled Plata O Plomo and commented “So the name of the album is called Plata O Plomo…you know money or bullets”.[6]

The title of the album, "plata o plomo", translates from Spanish to "silver or lead", meaning "money or bullets". The phrase was used in the Netflix TV Show Narcos by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar who would offer government officials and law enforcement the choice of taking a bribe, or having a murder contract placed against them.[7]

Promotion

Following the release of the album, Fat Joe commented:

This album is a masterpiece... This New York area, y’all better support this. Y’all ain’t had an album come out like this in years... You ain’t had no major New York album come out like this in years, bro, with the quality and the hits that’s on this, and we got the mud. And we got the dirtiest rhymes, lyrics, hardcore stuff too. This album is complete from A-Z. It’s crazy, bro.[8]
