WWE Payback (2017) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and WWE Network event, produced by WWE for the Raw brand. It will take place on April 30, 2017 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.[1] It will be the fifth event in the Payback chronology.

Background

The card will include matches resulting from scripted storylines and have results predetermined by WWE on the Raw brand.[2][3] Storylines are produced on WWE's weekly television shows Monday Night Raw and 205 Live, the latter of which is cruiserweight-exclusive.[4] As a result of the 2017 WWE Superstar Shake-up, Payback will also feature a match with the SmackDown brand's WWE Championship, with its storylines also produced on SmackDown Live.[5]

At WrestleMania 33, Kevin Owens defeated Chris Jericho to win the United States Championship.[6] The following night on Raw, it was announced that Jericho would get a rematch for the championship at Payback. Jericho and Seth Rollins were then scheduled to face Owens and Samoa Joe on Raw, but the two attacked Jericho backstage, taking him out of the match. Jericho was then replaced by the returning Finn Bálor, who had been out since SummerSlam 2016. Rollins and Bálor defeated Owens and Joe.[7] The following week, Owens faced Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose, who moved to the Raw brand as a result of the Superstar Shake-up. Owens lost to Ambrose, and after the match, Jericho appeared and delivered a Codebreaker to Owens.[5] As a result of the Superstar Shake-up the next night Owens moved to SmackDown Live. Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan announced the winner of the match at Payback between Owens and Jericho would become a permanent member of the Smackdown roster.[8]

On the WrestleMania 33 pre-show, Neville defeated Austin Aries to retain the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.[9] On the April 4 episode of 205 Live, Aries won a fatal four-way number one contender's match to earn a rematch against Neville.[10] On the April 10 episode of Raw, it was announced that the rematch would happen at Payback.[5]

At WrestleMania 33, Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt to win his ninth WWE Championship.[6] On the following episode of SmackDown Live, Wyatt challenged Orton to a "House of Horrors" match for the title and Orton accepted. Wyatt and the returning Erick Rowan then lost a tag team match against Orton and Luke Harper.[11] On the April 10 episode of Raw, Wyatt was moved to the Raw brand as a result of the "Superstar Shake-up", but he was still allowed his rematch for the WWE Championship, which was confirmed to happen at Payback.[5] The next night on SmackDown, Wyatt influenced Erick Rowan into ambushing Orton with steel steps a match between Orton and Wyatt.[8]

At WrestleMania 33, The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy) made their return to WWE and were inserted into the Raw Tag Team Championship fatal four-way ladder match, where they won the championship.[6] The following night on Raw, former champions Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson invoked their rematch clause, but were unsuccessful. Later in the show, Cesaro and Sheamus defeated Enzo Amore and Big Cass to become the number one contender's for the tag titles.[7] The following week, the championship match was confirmed for Payback. Also on that episode of Raw, The Hardys teamed up with Cesaro and Sheamus where they defeated Gallows and Anderson and The Shining Stars (Primo and Epico).[5]
