Stephane Kasriel is an entrepreneur, innovator, and tech executive who is the CEO of Upwork (formerly Elance-oDesk),[1] the world's largest freelancing website.

Education and Career

Stephane Kasriel received a Master of Business Administration from INSEADa Master of Science in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from École Polytechnique.[2]

He is a former executive at PayPal (Global Head of PayPal Consumer Products, Global Head of Mobile Business Development, and Managing Director of PayPal France), Work4 and Zong.[2] He also co-founded two companies, Fireclick[3] (web analytics) and iFeelGoods[4] (digital rewards), and holds 15 patents for web-related technologies.[5]

Kasriel joined Upwork (then oDesk) in June 2012 as Vice President of Product & Engineering. As VP and later SVP of Product & Engineering, he led a global, distributed team of more than 300 engineers, designers, and programmers.[6] On April 20, 2015, Kasriel was appointed CEO and led the company through its rebrand to Upwork and the launch of a new freelance platform by the same name that combined the best aspects of both prior sites (Elance and oDesk) and added a layer of innovation helping to advance the future of work.[6] As product lead prior to his promotion to CEO, Kasriel led much of the development efforts for this innovation.[7]

As CEO of Upwork, Kasriel is an expert on future of work, from global forces impacting the job market and the rise of the freelance economy to how companies are changing the way they build teams and bridging skills gaps. Harvard Business Review[8] and Bloomberg View[9] have featured Kasriel on topics including the future of work, entrepreneurship and how to strengthen the global economy. Kasriel has spoken at World Economic Forum’s annual gathering in Davos,[36] industry conferences such as Web Summit,[37] Collision,[38] The Economist Innovation Forum,[39] Staffing Industry Analysts’ Collaboration in the Gig Economy[40] and Executive Forum North America,[41] and numerous academic institutions including MIT’s Media Lab,[42] McKinsey Global Institute-New York University Digital Future of Work Summit,[43] LEADE.RS Paris,[44] the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations,[45] and Harvard Business School, which teaches a case study on Upwork.[46]

In addition to being an expert on work, Kasriel is also a thought leader on gender issues and education. He is currently Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Education, Gender and Work.[47][48]

Kasriel is also the author of the book “Hire Fast and Build Things”,[31] which details how to build a distributed team of developers.
