"A Funky Space Reincarnation" is a jazz-funk single recorded and released as the lead single from 1978's ''Here My Dear'' in 1979 by Marvin Gaye on Motown's Tamla label.

Context

In this song, he describes a parallel universe where in the future, he's a captain of a "space bed" and he meets a woman that reminds him of his first wife, Anna.He then tells the woman that they'd probably get "married in June" and tells her to "smoke a joint from out of Venus".

Influence

The song seems to have been inspired by the likes of funk musicians such as Parliament-Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire and was a short-lived change in Marvin's career .The song's musical arrangement is a reprise of his song "Anger," found earlier on the album. The song's smooth composition and echoed keyboards make it an early integer of what became quiet-storm music, aside from Marvin's earlier ecordings of 1971 and 1973.

Charting

The song became a modest hit on the R&B charts, where it peaked at No.23 there. It became Gaye's only solo success of that year.

The song was used in the advert for the Dior perfume J'adore in 2007 starring Charlize Theron.Singer Musiq Soulchild included a vocal passage from Part 1 in his song, "Until", from his OnMyRadio album, in 2009.
