The European School, Munich (ESM) is one of thirteen European Schools and one of three in Germany. First established in 1977, it moved to its current location in Neuperlach, a district in the south-east of Munich, in the state of Bavaria in 1981. The ESM was principally established to serve the schooling needs of children of the staff of the European Patent Office (EPO), the executive body of the European Patent Organisation. However, enrolment is open to other prospective students. The school offers the European Baccalaureate as its secondary leaving qualification.
Campus and facilities
Rising popularity in recent years, has led to the the reconstruction of the main campus to cater for increasing student numbers. In 2006, the former nursery school was demolished to make way for a new canteen and science laboratories, connected via a skybridge to the main building. A new nursery school was built facing away from the secondary and primary facilties. In 2014, a series of temporary classrooms were erected, whilst further construction work on additional buildings is undertaken. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
Sports facilities, consisting of three large sports halls, and a smaller hall, by the name of the Europahalle are connected to the main building via a tunnel. Above the sports facilities are three large rooms used for examinations, respectively named after the Dutch renaissance humanist Erasmus, and the two European Union (EU) founding fathers Robert Schuman, and Jean Monnet.
Public transport links to the schools' campus in Neuperlach, Munich include the Therese-Giehse-Allee station on the Munich U-Bahn, and the Neuperlach, Friedhof stop on the no. 55 bus line.
