The 2016 FIA GT World Cup was the second edition of the FIA GT World Cup held on the streets of Macau on 20 November 2016. The race was contested with GT3-spec cars and in contrast to the inaugural event it was not a non-championship race part of the GT Asia Series. The event promoter, the Automobile General Association Macau-China (AAMC), appointed the Stéphane Ratel Organisation (SRO) to help bring a grid together.

Main Race
As the leaders were midway through Lap 2, the race initially went under the safety car as a result of a crash for Ricky Capo exiting Fisherman's Bend on his first lap, with the Australian's BMW contacting the tyre barriers at considerable speed necessitating barrier repairs, resulting in a red flag to be waved at the end of Lap 3, which designated under FIA Code an official race, resulting in a delay in the race. The cars were sent to pit lane, and the originally scheduled 18-lap race became a timed race. Following the delay, the race restarted under the Safety Car on Lap 5. The green flag waved for a restart on Lap 6 with Earl Bamber in a Porsche made a clean overtake on the leading car of Audi factory driver Laurens Vanthoor before the entrance to Mandarin Oriental Band, where on the exit of the kink, the now second-placed Vanthoor, in the draft of Bamber's Porsche, was caught in an aero push condition, attempted to overcorrect it, and making contact with the barrier, resulting in his WRT to get airborne and flip onto its roof. Vanthoor was unharmed in the incident, but it caused a second red flag to be called. With less than 15 minutes remaining in the timed event, the race could not be restarted and was declared official. The FIA Code states if a race is suspended and is unable to continue, the results are based on the results of the penultimate lap before the red flag was called, in this case Lap 4, meaning that the results were deemed official as of the first red flag stoppage at the end of Lap 4, meaning Vanthoor, despite causing the red flag, was declared the winner as FIA rules declare neither the Lap 5 restart nor the Lap 6 incident counted in results.[1] Additionally, Bamber, who had been leading the race at the stoppage, was classified second but then assessed a five-second penalty for an incident with Maro Engel on the initial start, dropping him to fourth place.[2]
