The Graphic Designer's Barnstar

Hehe, pardon me for the subject, I didn't want to ruin the surprise :-) This barnstar is for your accurate, tireless and thorough work on SVG images and illustrations. We are proud of how much your contributions add to articles contents, look and reader's experience. Keep up the good work! —Gennaro Prota•Talk 12:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nitpick about your signature code

Hi Mysid,

just noticed (from validating my talk page) that your signature code uses orange as attribute for the font element. I thought you might want to change it to #ffa500 for strict compliance. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 12:18, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed it, thanks for the notice. And sorry for not reading the blue box on the top of your talk page before posting the answer. –Mysid(t) 14:00, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :) I think you can also remove this whole thread now, if you want. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 14:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I was almost forgetting... yesterday I noticed this:

http://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:New_Wikisource_logo

I'm sure you will come up with something good for it! :) —Gennaro Prota•Talk 14:25, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like quite a big challenge for me. And there are already very nice ones in the gallery. Thanks for confidence, I'll give it a thought... –Mysid(t) 15:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Empire strikes back 2.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Empire strikes back 2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Lord Deskana Dark Lord of the Sith 22:18, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with its fair use being disputable, and have to plead by saying I only modified its proportions. :P –Mysid(t) 09:45, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Crossbar switch image

Hi Peter (User:Peter Ellis), do you remember where you got the image of a crossbar switch you uploaded, Image:Crossbar2.jpg? It will eventually be considered for deletion if the source is not found. It would be a shame as the image adds considerably to the article. Thanks for seeing on this one. –Mysid(t) 08:20, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion. I have provided as much justification as I could discover. Cheers, Peter Ellis 03:28, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great! –Mysid(t) 06:37, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clam questions

Clams are certainly edible (not the shell though) and can be very tasty! The organism inside is completely biodegradeable, but the shell can last astronomically long times without being disintegrated. •USER•ADAM THE ATOM•TALK• 08:35, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info, but I didn't ask the question, I just pointed the questioner to see the Clam article. If you wish to answer questions, you can do it on the Reference Desk itself. I've copied your answer to the Desk. –Mysid(t) 08:49, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've tagged this image with a no license tag. The original tag you placed, {{gfdl-self}} was inappropriate. You may not be aware; redrawing a work yourself does not grant you rights to release it under gfdl. If this were the case, then anyone could take any logo of any sports team for example and create their own line of logo items, making a bunch of money in the process. In cases such as these, the original copyright holder retains rights. I tried to establish what the copyrights were of this particular image, but the closest I came was [1]. I'm hoping you can determine what the copyright status of this image is. --Durin 15:18, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am in the understanding that United States city flags are not copyrightable. I checked Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems, which stated that if an emblem is defined in an official law, code, or regulation, it cannot be copyrighted. You pointed me to such a regulation, so I believe the correct tag should be {{PD}}. –Mysid(t) 16:03, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The law covers flags of state and federal areas. I am uncertain about the status of city and other municipal flags. It is possible they are copyrighted. --Durin 16:12, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"This applies to such works whether they are Federal, State, or local as well as to those of foreign governments." (U.S. Copyright Office: Compendium of Office Practices II, section 206.01.) It says local as well, which I presume includes cities. Also see my question at Copyright problems, and the answer: Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#Copyright of US city flags. I'll retag all of my US city flags as PD. Thanks for bringing this issue up. –Mysid(t) 17:01, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the heads up! I read the link you noted above, and think the term "edict" does not apply to flags. I've continued the discussion at the Wikipedia talk page you noted. Hopefully we can untangle this. --Durin 17:51, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. As I'm not native and couldn't even find the definition of edict in any dictionary, I'd say I'm a bit non-competent in such a legal discussion... –Mysid(t) 19:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I feel inclined to comment on this discussion: Mysid's original GFDL-self here was simply the licensing he applied to the vector image he created himself. Maybe PD-self would have been more appropriate, since that means he does not claim any rights on the design etc? In any case, using Durin's reasoning here, we couldn't have hardly any city/municipal flags (or coats of arms/seals) on any Wikimedia project, since most designs are either copyrighted, trademarked or otherwise protected by law in various jurisdictions. Without clear general guidelines on this issue, zealous admins like Durin will continue to delete such images. --Himasaram 13:58, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree we should have clear guidelines on this matter. For example, the FOTW people have drawn quite a lot of US city flags and licensed them for non-commercial use only, so I guess there is no problem in me licensing flags created by myself under the GFDL, either. Afterall, I'm not claiming any rights to the flag itself, just licensing the SVG representation. –Mysid(t) 18:43, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong picture

I just wanted to inform you (as I was advised to do [2]) that the album artwork: Giant-alien-force-cover.png does not coincide with the album artwork displayed on the official homepage of the artist [3]. No articles in the english wikipedia link to the image any longer and I have marked it for deletion.

PURPLEFISH 23:28, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for informing me, and great that it's been replaced. –Mysid(t) 06:50, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does Nokia run Finland?

You also seem like a good person to ask :) Mathiastck 01:58, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you're talking about Finland's economy, then kind of yes, Nokia phones have been a major part of the exports. Not the biggest part, though. Finland also exports metals, wood, and vehicles. Some years ago Nokia was also trying to blackmail the Finnish government to cut the taxes, "or we'll move abroad". But they haven't done that for a while (and the government only cut taxes on booze). So I don't think they "run Finland" in any other way now. I'm somehow disgusted by the company and it's in my personal boycott. –Mysid(t) 06:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Creek flag

Hi Mysid! I uploaded a new version of the flag of the Creek people. You are the original uploader, so I thought it'd be good manners to let you know. Hope you didn't mind me doing it! -- Himasaram 13:46, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's an enormous improvement. Thanks for letting me know. –Mysid(t) 15:23, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:3db.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:3db.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Nilfanion (talk) 16:02, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The logo was orphaned because it was not the current logo of the radio station. However, I've now added it back to the 3DB article with a caption explaining that it is an old logo. –Mysid(t) 17:12, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Walter Steffens stub/ disambig.

Hey Mysid:

Since I do not speak/read so much as 100 words of German, I was wondering if you may have heard of the OTHER Walter Steffenses, which include a track and field star and a possible Naval or Socialist hero from the Volksmarine... Just trying to expand the "Naval History" section of the English wikipedia when I came across the composer and the athlete.

Cheers:

V. Joe 16:49, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have't heard of him, but seems like there is an article about him in the German Wikipedia. Not much to translate there, though. –Mysid(t) 16:55, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notability Page

Thanks! I searched using Wikipedia-search, Google, and Yahoo but they didn't turn up any page on Notability.

I don't know what redirect policy or anything is, but it might be useful to use that page to redirect to the right-proper pagee, so other people who have my problem don't go recreating it again. - — Preceding unsigned comment added by FarMcKon (talkcontribs) 17:05, October 16, 2006 (UTC)

Yes, that could be a good thing to have. No current redirect policy opposes it. Strange that it didn't appear in the search results, though. –Mysid(t) 17:09, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

how to do that?

how do i take notes on userpage? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamryanlee (talkcontribs) 19:28, October 16, 2006 (UTC)

You seem to have figured it out already. But you can get there by clicking on this link. –Mysid(t) 19:37, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VitalKey

Hi there

I noticed you already made changes on the VitalKey page. Thanks for helping me out. Is there any other sections I should add? I will try to find more information.
