Madelaine Grobbelaar Petsch[2] (born August 18, 1994) is an American actress. She is known for portraying Cheryl Blossom on the 2017 CW television series Riverdale.

Early life

Petsch was born on August 18, 1994, and grew up in Port Orchard, Washington.[3][4][5][6] At the age of three, she developed a passion for dance and began dance classes, theatre classes followed two years later. Petsch's parents are from South Africa, and she spent the first ten years of her life dividing her time between South Africa and Washington.[7][8] Petsch experienced bullying as a child due to her natural red hair, South African accent, and being raised with no religion.[9] She attended South Kitsap High School[10] and Tacoma School of the Arts and relocated to Los Angeles immediately after graduating.[11][12] Petsch has one brother.

Career

Petsch appeared in a national advertising campaign for Coca-Cola in 2014.[13]

In February 2016, Petsch was cast as Cheryl Blossom in The CW's Riverdale,[14] having been pinned for the role since late 2015 after meeting the casting director, who was at the time working on Legends of Tomorrow.[15] The series began filming in September of that year and premiered on January 26, 2017.[16] In March 2017, she joined the cast of Polaroid.[17]

Personal life

At the age of 14, she became a vegan,[18] after being raised vegetarian. She has also participated in an awareness campaign for PETA.[19]
