Rosalía Vila Tobella (born 25 September 1993), known mononymously as Rosalía, is a Spanish singer, songwriter and record producer.[1][2] Initially known for her modern interpretations of flamenco music, Rosalía crossed language boundaries after receiving praise from international influencers and after several collaborations with artists such as J Balvin, Pharrell Williams, and James Blake.

Biography

Rosalía first became interested in music through her father, beginning to sing with him at 7 years old. By the age of 10 she began to dedicate herself to music, deciding to study it at 13. She enrolled at the Superior School of Music of Catalonia where she received classes from Chiqui de La Línea, a flamenco teacher who only accepted one student per year. At 15 years old she competed on the television show Tú sí que vales, although she wasn't selected.

Rosalía worked as a duo with Juan "Chicuelo" Gómez at the 2013 Panama International Film Festival and at the Festival Grec de Barcelona for the contemporary dance work De Carmen. In 2013 she participated in the Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) Conference in New York, and was the lead voice in the culmination of the Año Espriu 2014 at the Palau de la Música. In 2015 she collaborated with La Fura dels Baus on a show premiered in Singapore. She was the opening act for Miguel Poveda, accompanied by Alfredo Lagos, at the International Music Festival of Cadaqués, and also at the 2016 Jerez Festival. She worked with Rocío Márquez on the presentation of her album El Niño, produced by Raül Refree, at Primavera Sound 2015.

In 2017, Rosalía presented the album Los ángeles, a joint project with the producer and musician Raül Refree,[3][4][5][6] which presents reworks of flamenco classics,[7] receiving several accolades.[8][9][10]

In 2018, after releasing three singles, Rosalía released El mal querer, written by her and co-produced with El Guincho. The album is presented as experimental and conceptual, revolving around a toxic relationship, inspired by the anonymous 14th century Occitan novel Flamenca.[11] On 30 May 2018 she released the first single of this second album, titled "Malamente". The second single, "Pienso en tu mirá", was released on 24 July 2018. Both videos acquired a certain level of social media virality, praising the aesthetics and the poetic symbolism in both of them.[12]

In 2019, she made her acting debut in the film Pain and Glory (Dolor y gloria).[13]. She also went on tour across Europe, performing at various summer rock festivals. In March, she announced a collaboration with Billie Eilish.[14]
