Anilingus
Anal-oral contact, also referred to as anal-oral sex, rimming, a rimjob, tossing the salad, or anilingus (from "anus" and "lingua", commonly misspelled as "analingus", compare cunnilingus), is a sexual activity involving contact between the anus or perineum of one person and the mouth of another.
It is a distinct practice from anal sex followed by fellatio, which is often referred to as ass to mouth.
Health risks
From a health standpoint, anal-oral contact may carry serious risks because of the presence of bacteria on or in the anus or rectum. Applying the mouth to the genitals immediately after applying it to the anus can inadvertently introduce Escherichia coli ("E. coli") into the urethra, causing a urinary tract infection. Unprotected anal-oral contact involves the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, such as genital herpes or intestinal parasites.
Thoroughly washing the area can help reduce the risk of diseases. Another way to protect against any health risks is by placing a sheet of plastic wrap (or a dental dam) over the anus. This allows the passive partner to receive stimulation while protecting the active partner from bacterial infection.
Anal-oral contact in popular culture
- In the American sitcom, Sex and the City, the main character, Carrie, uses the euphemism tuchus lingus.
- It is mentioned in the movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, and is one known way the character Butters has been sexually molested.
- Reference to "tossing the salad" is made in Chris Rock's comedy routine, Tossed Salad Man, and in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II.
- In Six Feet Under a closeted Episcopalian priest is seen renting a video called "Back to the crack: Butt Munch, Part 2", a gay pornographic movie dedicated to rimming.
- In the controversial pilot episode of the UK television series "Queer as Folk", Stuart (Aidan Gillen) is shown rimming the underaged Nathan (Charlie Hunnam). This scene was also shown in the US version's pilot, with Gale Harold as Brian and Randy Harrison as Justin.
- In the popular UK comedy sketch show Little Britain in a Daffyd Thomas sketch, an old man says he enjoys rimming.
- In R. Kelly's song, "In the Kitchen" on his album TP-3: Reloaded, the singer expresses his willingness to toss salad.
- On The Daily Show on September 19, 2006, Jon Stewart, in reference to the E.coli outbreak in spinach, deadpanned that the director of the FDA urged people, in essence, "to toss their salads."
