Woodlands North MRT station (TE1) is an upcoming underground Mass Rapid Transit terminal station in Woodlands, Singapore, located near Republic Polytechnic.[1] The station is the northern terminal of the Thomson–East Coast line (TEL) and will be the northernmost MRT station in Singapore when it opens on 31 January 2020.

This station is one of the only three MRT stations which is not located beside a road median. The other two being Mattar MRT station on the Downtown line and Hougang MRT station on the North East line.

A planned Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) at this station was postponed on 21 May 2019 due to financial implications on Malaysia's side.[2] On 31 October 2019, Malaysia agreed to resume the RTS project at a lower cost although the project is still suspended until 30 April 2020.[3][4]

History

This station was first announced on 29 August 2012 by then Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew.[5] Before the station was built, the working names were 'Woodlands North', 'Republic Polytechnic' and 'Admiralty Park'. On 27 June 2014, Woodlands North was officially chosen.[6]

Contract T202 which involves the construction of this station was awarded to Penta-Ocean Construction Co Ltd at a contract value of S$337 million on 29 November 2013.[7] Construction of the station began in early 2014.

The station was initially planned to open by the end of 2019 as part of the first stage of the TEL. However the station's opening was pushed back to 31 January 2020.[8]
