SHAREit (SHAREit Technologies Co.Ltd) is a technology company founded in April 2015.[5] The CEO of the company is Michael Qiu.[6] Users can use SHAREit to transfer files including photos, videos, music, contacts, apps and any other files. SHAREit application allows Windows, Windows Phone, Android, and iOS devices to transfer files directly.[7] It is currently available in 45 languages including English, Hindi, Bangla, Indonesian, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese.[8]

The owners of SHAREit also own various other utility apps such as SHAREit Lite, LOCKit, LISTENit, CLEANit, CLONEit and S-Player.[9]

Details

The SHAREit application uses a secure connection protocol and has transfer speeds faster than Bluetooth and NFC. The other methods for file transferring are either through Bluetooth, NFC, or USB drives. This was noted by various renowned universities and even magazines like WIRED. Looking at the unsafe protocol offered by USB drives, and slow speed of Bluetooth, applications like SHAREit were developed, based on Wi-Fi Direct methods.[promotion?]

SHAREit also offers its users a range of digital entertainment from videos, music, films, GIF, meme, etc. within its app by collaborating with partners such as Times Music.[10]

SHAREit has more than 1.8 billion users worldwide, with more than 600 million users in India and Indonesia. SHAREit’s Monthly Active Users (MAU) has exceeded 500 million users with presence in more than 200 countries and regions around the world, operating in 45 different languages. SHAREit is now a leading[promotion?] content platform especially in emerging markets, and has been regarded as “Nationally Favored App” in India, Indonesia, Mid-East, Africa, Russia etc.[11]

SHAREit is also one of the top 10 most downloaded apps on Google Play for the past 10 years together with WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, UC Browser, Snapchat and Line according to report by app market data insight company Appannie.[12]

On 8 May 2018, SHAREit acquired the Fastfilmz app and appointed Karam Malhotra, the founder of Fastfilmz as the CEO of SHAREit India.[13]

Other apps

  • SHAREit Lite: Faster version of SHAREit app. It enables users to transfer photos, videos, music, any files with friends face to face OR far away, and no limitation on file type or file size or number of files. The SHAREit technologies has come with a new feature to it, requiring users to provide a standard cellular mobile number for registering. The users can also chat with anyone when online.[citation needed]
  • CLONEit: Replicates contacts, SMS messages, MMS messages, music, videos, apps and other data from one old phone to the new one.[14]
  • LOCKit: Privacy protection app uses pattern, PIN. and fingerprint. Move secret photos videos into vault.[15]
  • LISTENit: Music player and organization tool.[16]
  • CLEANit: Memory booster, battery saver, apps manager, mobile analyst, file manager, game booster.[17]
  • S Player: Video player developed by the SHAREit team.[citation needed]

Issues with software

In 2017, the Indian government announced a list of apps, including SHAREit, on Android and iOS that it says intelligence agencies have reported are spyware. Troops were told to delete these apps.[18] SHAREit denied this accusation by releasing an official statement.[19]

To ensure security in offline peer-to-peer app sharing, SHAREit has collaborated with Google to start security metadata integration program.[20] After the metadata integration, all apps shared through SHAREit will be offline screened by Google Play to ensure all apps transferred from one device to another is original and malware free.
