3AW is a radio station in Melbourne, Australia. It began transmission in February 1932 as the city's fifth commercial radio station. 3AW's original broadcast frequency was 1425 kHz, and changed to 1280 kHz on September 1, 1935 as part of a national reshuffle of the radio broadcasting spectrum. On November 23, 1978 the station changed to 1278 kHz with the introduction of 9kHz spacing on the AM band. Due to poor reception problems, at 7:15AM on the 1 May 2006, 3AW swapped with its sister station 3EE to its present frequency 693 kHz. The station is now broadcasting from a transmitter in the suburb of Werribee and studios are located in South Melbourne, sharing facilities with sister station 3EE. The program format is primarily news, talkback and sport.
The station is owned and operated by Southern Cross Broadcasting and is the #1 rated AM radio station in Melbourne.
On weekday mornings Ross Stevenson and John Burns present a light hearted breakfast show that includes Melbourne's most listened to radio segment, the Rumour File. From 8.30am Neil Mitchell presents a current affairs program, with a strongly talkback-based format, together with interviews. Regular guests include Prime Minister John Howard, Treasurer Costello and Victorian Premier Steve Bracks. After the noon news Ernie Sigley presents a more lifestyle-based programming. From 4pm Derryn Hinch presents a mildly controversial Drive show begins. Hosting the evening slot (8pm-Midnight) are TV pioneers Philip Brady and Bruce Mansfield. Keith McGowan hosts the Overnighters from Midnight through to 5:30am.
