Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Dr. Blofeld CCI cleanup
This is a Contributor copyright investigations cleanup effort of Dr. Blofeld's contributions. Blofeld's 606,405 edits are appreciated, but he was discovered to have copied content in his early editing days, in what was likely a common misunderstanding of copyright law. A CCI, Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Dr. Blofeld, was reluctantly opened and filled out (only to a certain date), generating the largest CCI ever, with a staggering 66 subpages. Fortunately, at very most, potentially only about 5% of these edits are copyright violations, and the mass, mass majority of edits are non-copyrightable prose, meaning that those who don't know much about copyright can help out.
Why money, why?
If this CCI was way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way smaller, Me, MER-C, and Wizardman could easily finish it. Unfortunately, due to its size, that is not practical, and with only the 3 of us working on it will likely take over 2 years. Even then, due to the awful backlog at CCI, it's bad to let a massive investigation filled with trivial diffs sit around, as I learned the hard way. This may suck, but its the only efficient way to get things done. Leaving the CCI around will only cause suffering for future generations of wikipedians.
How to identify "Basic Prose"
Helping is pretty easy and required no real knowledge of copyright at all. The mass majority of edits listed at the CCI are stuff like this, a simple geostub with no copyrightable material inserted. For reference, the following edits cannot be copyright violations:
- [1] A simple list, just names
- [2] "X is a town in Y. Census said it has Z amount of people"
- [3] Basic information about a town, (It has a library, first mentioned in x year, geographical stats)
- [4] "Y was a X movie made in Z and stars Q, S, and D"
- [5] "X was a politician who served as Y and succeeded by Z in Q"
- [6] Infobox insertion
Most articles listed are like this. I do not recommend presumptive deletions/removals, as DrB can be contacted and enough people are monitoring this page to be able to help with finding obscure sources.
Steps on finding basic prose
- 1. Find a section of a subpage and start editing it.
- 2. Before doing anything, Click on show preview.
- 3. Click on the diffs, opening them in a new tab. Review the content added in the diffs.
- 4. If the content is like the above diffs, then paste
{{n}} Basic prose --~~~~
next to the diff. If it is not, then leave the diff alone; the people who are in the know will deal with it. - 5. If you aren't sure if the edit is basic prose or not, just bring it up on the talk page here.
- 6. If you finish a section, insert
{{collapse top|Clear ~~~~}}
directly below the header, and{{collapse bottom}}
directly below the last diff. Don't do this if you have any diffs you left alone.
Steps on finding copyvios
- NOTE: Earwig does not work on books or journals, so if they are cited, leave the listing alone, unless you have access to them. Earwig also cannot translate non english sources into english, so you will have to manually compare non-english sources with the articles.
- 1. Before running earwig, fix all dead links in the article. Make sure you check the box to link archives for all links, as the bot doesn't always detect dead links using the default option.
- 2. On an article that has a long history and many edits from many different users, you may not even need to run a check. Instead, take the diff link and paste it into the "URL comparison" box and run the comparison on the article on the listing. Look at the text highlighted, which will show whether or not if it is still in the article.
- 2.1 If it is still in the article, then compare the source cited in the edit to the article using the above process. If there is no source, then look through the next few edits in the page's history to determine when a ref was inserted. If the ref is dead, archive it in the current version using the fix dead links option. If it is not, manually archive it.
- 2.2 If it is no longer in the article, then mark the listing with
{{?}}Rewritten/removed since --~~~~
Make sure it wasn't moved to a different article.
- 3. Enter the article in and run the scan. Alternatively, just compare the sources cited in the edit with the edit id, as long as the source is not dead. I strongly encourage looking at the sources cited in the initial edits, as they may no longer be in the article, and earwig only does a limited web search, making it unlikely to find them.
- 4. View the results. Ignore the percentage, go off of highlighted text. At least check everything above ten percent.
- 5. If you find no violation, write
{{n}} Checked --~~~~
- 6. If you do find (a) violation(s), remove it. Depending on how large it is, (If you are a non-admin) mark the article for a revdel; I highly recommend you install User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel for this.
- 7. Keep an eye out for sources in the Public Domain or under free license; Some of them are attributed properly, some are not. They tend to be US government sources/very old (pre 1923) books. See the bottom of my user page for a chart showing the compatible licenses.
- 7.1. If it is unattributed, add the
{{PD-notice}}
do what I do here - 8. For half attributed interwiki translations, add the article is was translated from to the talk page, like I do here.

The Dutchy85 CCI is our second largest open investigation at 14 subpages and probably the second largest ever. It was populated on the same day as the Dr. Blofeld CCI. There's a couple of thousand trivial edits in the three subpages below. Many of these are additions of a sentence or two with references.

Also opened on Boxing Day was a CCI for Kailash29792, a FAC writer who I caught inexplicably caught copying plot summaries from IMDB. This page should also be easy.
This is an old CCI with a few hundred politician stubs that can be cleared out.
