The Lanka Premier League (Sinhala: ලංකා ප්‍රිමියර් ලීග්; abbreviated LPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in Sri Lanka to be contested every year by teams representing Sri Lankan cities from 2020.[1][2] The league was founded by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in 2018.[3] Veteran cricketer and commentator Russel Arnold was named as the director of Lankan Premier League in 2018.[4] But in 2020, Ravin Wickramaratne, the Vice President in Sri Lanka Cricket has officialy been appointed as the director of the tournament.[5]

History

Background

Originally, 2018 was going to be the first season of the Lanka Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in 2018. The season, which was supposed to be held from 18 August to 10 September 2018,[6][7][8] but later postponed to possibly next year.[9][10] In April 2019, Sri Lanka Cricket tentatively set the dates of the first tournament to run from 8 to 28 September 2019.[11] In June 2020, Sri Lanka Cricket announced that they plan to hold the tournament in August 2020.[12] The following month, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the tournament would run from 28 August to 20 September 2020.[13] By the end of July 2020, 70 overseas players had shown their interest in playing in the league.[14] However, on 11 August 2020, SLC confirmed that the first edition of the tournament had been postponed until at least the middle of November 2020.[15] On 2 September 2020, a revised schedule was issued, with the tournament expected to run from 14 November to 6 December 2020.[16] In the 1st Edition, Matches will be held on Kandy, Dambulla & Hambantota as the Colombo (RPS) is under construction.

Teams

On 2 September 2020, the Galle Gladiators were named as one of the teams,[17][18] with Shahid Afridi being their icon player.[19]
